Bradley Manning nears 1000 days in US jail with no trial

February 23 marks the 1000th day in which alleged WikiLeaks whistleblower, 24-year-old US Army intelligence officer Bradley Manning, has been jailed by US authorities without trial.

A pre-trial hearing in January in the case of Manning, concluded that his defence would be restricted to arguing motive during his trial, scheduled for June 3.

Manning has been accused of leaking thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks, which revealed a wide range of US war crimes, as well as evidence of corruption and lying by a range of governments.

BradleyManning.org said Manning is “accused of releasing the Collateral Murder video, that shows the killing of unarmed civilians and two Reuters journalists, by a US Apache helicopter crew in Iraq. He is also accused of sharing the Afghan War Diary, the Iraq War Logs, and a series of embarrassing US diplomatic cables.

“These documents ... illuminated such issues as the true number and cause of civilian casualties in Iraq, along with a number of human rights abuses by U.S.-funded contractors and foreign militaries, and the role that spying and bribes play in international diplomacy.

“Given the war crimes exposed, if PFC Bradley Manning was the source for these documents, he should be given a medal of honor.”

Brcause in a "free" country with freedom of speech there would be NO guilt here. So, they just put him away like Monte Cristo.

The betrayal of our troops is a horrific crime. The vast majority of boots on the ground believe in, and are willing to die for, America's founding principles. But US leaders use them to commit crimes against humanity. Initially, most troops don't realize this, but after a few tours it dawns on them. That's probably why more active duty soldiers are committing suicide than dying in battle.

Bradley Manning was originally charged with "aiding the enemy" and there's actionable evidence that civilian and military leaders are doing just that. They give billions of dollars of aid and technology to governments that sponsor terrorists who are killing Americans. US leaders are playing both sides of the War on Terror and they must be held accountable. Bradley Manning is doing his part and we must do ours. In the first clip, Richard Holbrooke, Obama's Af/Pak envoy, admits that US and Pakistani intelligence helped create extremist groups now killing Americans. The clips are about two minutes each.

I've read DP rules and reflected on them (no assholes) before saving my comment. But Bradley Manning has manned up in a way that most of us never will, and he's paying the ultimate price for it. So supporting him with something akin to a bumper sticker is unacceptable. However, I accept your criticism as constructive and will do better next time. Judge Lind...like most of the government she serves....is a treasonous criminal.

But he also represents treason to the corporation he was serving. And we all know, the forces do not searve the people, but in the name of the people, who have little choice, even if they move to another country.. think those country's want Americans and would Americans be safe without embassey's? How many folks are arrested and locked up indefinately in Singapor or Mexico for that matter?

Wasn't it a tribunal.. where the corporation tries the employee of a federal level, that signed away constitutional rights when the joined?

The problem with Obama is he did not stop it, proving it's not a presient who will restore the republic, but the people, and that is why I have hope in changing the GOP with the rEVOLution.

I don't know how else it happens without getting involved.

I remember last year Dr. Paul in his speech in Tampa in the one-day Paul gathering....actually spent a few minutes on Bradley Manning....saying that he was not a criminal. Also Julian Assange.

How is it in our screwed up 1984 doublespeak world that "they" can continually and serially punish whistleblowers...when the whistleblowers should be given medals of honor....and "they" should be rounded up and detained for trial for war crimes?

Obama needs to give back his Nobel Peace Prize and then it in turn needs to be given to Bradley Manning.
