AWESOME! Thousands of Starlings Murmurations

No one knows why they do it. Yet each fall, thousands of starlings dance in the twilight above England and Scotland. The birds gather in shape-shifting flocks called murmurations, having migrated in the millions from Russia and Scandinavia to escape winter's frigid bite. Scientists aren't sure how they do it, either.

The starlings' murmurations are manifestations of swarm intelligence, which in different contexts is practiced by schools of fish, swarms of bees and colonies of ants.

Even complex algorithmic models haven't yet explained the starlings' aerobatics, which rely on the tiny birds' quicksilver reaction time of under 100 milliseconds to avoid aerial collisions-and predators-in the giant flock.

Despite their tour de force in the dusky sky, starlings have declined significantly in the UK in recent years, perhaps because of a decline in suitable nesting sites. The birds still roost in several of Britain's rural pastures, however, settling down to sleep (and chatter) after their evening ballet.

Two young ladies were out for a late afternoon canoe ride and fortunately one of them remembered to bring her video camera. What they saw was a wonderful murmuration display, caught in the short video - URL is below. Watch the variation of color and intensity of the patterns that the birds make in proximity to one other.

Beyond cool!

Could do without the music, however.

People need to let certain moments just *be*... without always trying to attach distracting soundtracks to them.

Fantastic!

They move like the northern lights

Beautiful

Excellent video. Thank you.

Awesome! I watched that 5

Awesome! I watched that 5 times. Nature moves in such fluid ways.

Amazing

Starlings > Harry Potter :)

One of my favourite videos ever!

A great example of the "invisible force that connects living things" that old school scientists "don't understand" yet. Much like schools of fish, this is a great visual example of consciousness in motion like waves!

Beautiful.

the word awesome

is severely overused, however in this instance it is right on. thanks for posting.

Wow, really spectacular.

Starlings travel from northern countries deep to the south.

Here is a video about 200,000 starlings ventured into Southern Israel.

Beautiful

The synchronicity is amazing.

I Was Shocked

With the help of my cat, I caught a starling with a broken jaw and took it to the wildlife rescue place in California. They acted as if I'd brought them a cockroach (actually, they might have liked a cockroach, better). Apparently, they aren't native, here, and are considered pests, and invaders.

Luckily, we don't have them in that number! But you can see why they find it necessary to stick together and show off their formations. All armies do the same.

What do you think? http://consequeries.com/

Music was perfect

Every now and again i find something a little different..

True dat!

My husband and I were enjoying a wilderness soak when a hawk flew over us, pretty high up. I wondered how long it would take, if the hawk were to turd upon us, before it hit us, falling from that height. About 5 seconds later I got my answer.
ICK!
