Meet my son Kyle.

Houston weather, traffic, news | FOX 26 | MyFoxHouston

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - A University of Houston graduate student is doing an unusual study. He's going to give away 20-gauge single-shot shotguns in high-crime neighborhoods to see if it reduces crime.

"We're not just tossing a bunch of shotguns into a community and walking away," says Kyle Coplen. "What we're doing is finding residents who are interested in protecting themselves. we're not forcing guns on anyone."

He's started a group called the Armed Citizens Project. Here's the criteria for residents to get guns straight from its website:

You all are forgetting a factor here

The psychological side of what this program does.

Just think, if you were a potential criminal at a desperate time in your life, and you decided to break into a home, would you a) enter a home where you think there will be little resistance or b) enter into a neighborhood where you have heard is targeted by this program.

I know one shot isn't much, but all it would take is a few run ins with the new shotguns for the criminals to be psychologically afraid of breaking into any house in that neighbor, even if only 3/10 people are armed.

In my eyes, this is a great, cheap way to help crime ridden neighborhoods.

We'll see how the research goes. I'm excited.

Good idea...

....but wrong tool. Unless it is just one home invader and the homeowner actually scores a good shot, or the weapon actually fires. I don't know the percentages, but I'm thinking home invasions usually occur with more than one invader.

Not sure of the reason for just a one shot shotgun being given. If it's money concerns, don't do it.

If it's because a one shot shotgun is somehow more safe, then those giving out, and receiving these,.....shouldn't.

If I were a criminal

I would charge them after the first and only shot b/c of knowing they have to reload.

Did he consider

What will happen if the crime does not decrease in those neighborhoods? As pointed out in other comments here,a single shot gun is not much of a deterrent. And if the crime rate does not decrease,he is chalking up a notch for gun grabbers. And they will take full advantage of it.I hope he takes all this into consideration.

I think this study

is missing something important. Safe gun culture needs more than a just a course and a background check. Maybe that's sufficient if you just want to store one away for safekeeping, but I think new gun owners/users need a bit of mentoring, someone that's knowledgeable and whom they trust to check in once and a while and reiterate some of the things learned. I think you need this to help foster positive gun culture and keep everything in context. If people are needing to remember acronyms to keep track of things, then they're not comfortable enough to protect themselves or their families if need be. Secondly, I think this whole concept is misdirected. Violence perpetuates where injustice reigns. More guns probably correlates with less crime because an area that doesn't infringe on people's gun rights is also probably more just in general. If everybody is stacked in on top of each other, and the rule of law is thrown out the window, it wont matter if there is or isn't guns, violence will ensue. Giving people guns in this sort of environment might lower home invasions and targeted attacks, but the violence in general will persist. Justice has to come first.

your son?

You must be very proud!

What a terrific idea and

What a terrific idea and active kid. WTG!

I gave that exact

gun to a friend of mine who just had his first kid and is now starting to worry about protecting his family.

James Madison

Very interesting study!

but very likely to be suppressed.

Still, I look forward to seeing the results.

I believe in the freedom to be what we choose to be.

Right Idea BUT

those people need something better than a single shot gun. That plays right into the desires of tptb.

If that thing goes off within 20 feet of you

you will stop what you are doing. Not to mention if that thing is pointed at you when it goes off.

The what if game goes on forever...

James Madison

great idea, but...

I hope that the police department isnt a corrupt one... all it will take is for them to release fake crime statistics for that area and thats just one more argument in the gun grabbers favor.

Brilliant idea!

What an exciting study. At first I was a bit disappointed at the lethality of the shotgun, but it totally makes sense,as the real impediment to violence will be creating awareness of an environment that is hostile towards criminals.bravo!

they bring on a talk show

they bring on a talk show host to say we are trying to score political oints. when eactly what he is doing is scoring political points by being anti gun. Then they place someone who says a comment about treyvon martin a well thought out comment. And then they post comments that were pro gun that made the people whoposted them seem immature or small minded.

This is all propoganda, the news is total propoganda. Not being able to arm yourself is where slaves are, not us. We have a right to bear arms and we are safer when we do.

I agree - vote this one up.

It was so biased, those two messages presented from either side. Like Hannity and Colmes :)

Single Shot 20gauge shotgun

Something tells me that the Feds would love for that to be the only firearm allowed.

No more pump action shotguns

I can imagine a liberal talking head saying "To defend your home why do need more than 1 shell at a time?" or "Only criminals out to do harm needs 6 shells in their gun"

"First rule of Government Spending: Why build one when you can have 2 at twice the price?"
-S.R. Hadden

Why was Liberal against it? Joe Biden recommends shotguns.

He tells him woman to go outside and blast a couple rounds to scare away bad guys.

the 3rd ward or 5th ward or

the 3rd ward or 5th ward or montrose would be recommended

Those are actual names of neighborhoods?

All prison-like?

Instead of "Demanding A Plan" from corrupt politicians, get out in the community and make YOUR OWN plan! Considering the abundance of DATA out there that more legal gun possession = less crime, this is an "All-brainer". I'm sure the results will be successful as DATA continues to show.

Well done.

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience"—Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Well, the radio host is

doing an excellent job obeying his masters:

He believes the giveaway of guns will increase the number of suicides, and accidents.

The gun is a sentient being and will rise up and do harm...bwahhhh...

His statement could be said of prescription drugs, knives, hammers, baseball bats, stairs, bicycles, automobiles, whatever has the potential to be used for what it was not intended for.

What an ignorant statement.

Would love to know what he would do if his home was invaded and his family was at risk.

The law cannot make a wicked person virtuous…God’s grace alone can accomplish such a thing.
Ron Paul - The Revolution

Setting a good example is a far better way to spread ideals than through force of arms. Ron Paul

And the gun itself is incidental to this study

It seems the premise is more about publicizing a more armed neighborhood and seeing what happens. 20 guns isn't a big addition to a neighborhood, depending on what size of neighborhood they're talking about.

Defend Liberty!

That's an awesome study

Those criteria they picked sound very well thought out.

One hint on finding more data to identify similar neighborhoods that can be compared against each other is precinct voting data. I started to be able to almost guess what a house looked like in a neighborhood based on those numbers. I got a little obsessed with trying to find the effect of canvassing on neighborhoods and spotting similar neighborhoods to compare against each other was part of that.

I love single a shot 12 gauge

Such a simple, practical boom-stick. Cheap as dirt too.

I grew up hunting quail with this very gun.

The 20 gauge single shot. It makes you think about your shot, after all you only get one when it's a 5in quail.

I remember my brother and I at the time were taken out by guys from the hunters education program because my dad was out of the picture. We waked for miles shooting 1 quail at a time. Off in the distance we could hear the older men ...Boom..... Boom Boom Boom. They had pump guns. We never thought we were going to be able to get much. With our sacks full of birds prob 20 or so we were sure everyone was going to have their limits. My brother and i 13 an 14 at the time ended up with more birds then these old guys. Never under estimate a zealous heart with a single shot New England 20gauge!!

James Madison

That brought back memories

I had a 16 gauge single when I was a kid hunting pheasants, I also remember the guys with semi automatics and pumps, boom, boom, boom, boom, as they watch the pheasant fly away, LOL. Hunting with a single shot there is no second chance, you learn not to miss.

I think if you watch again ...

you will see that it's a 20 gauge. Easier for elderly and smaller people to handle, effective enough for the 20 ft. distance they describe.
