The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating whether members of its elite SWAT unit took advantage of their assignments to purchase large numbers of specially-made handguns and resell the weapons for steep profits, according to a report released Friday by the independent watchdog overseeing the department.

The allegations, if true, could be a violation of federal firearm laws and city ethics regulations.

It sounds like a free market transaction to me. If the officers are putting up the initial capital to get the firearms, they should have every right to sell them at any price they deem fit. Unless of course they are using department funds to purchase the firearms, that's a different story.

Though I don't know who would want something that said "LAPD" on their gun... Unless it was a battlefield pick up.

How is getting a discount because you are a member of an organization akin to insider trading?

Most if not all gun retailers provide a bulk and/or police/military discount. It's pretty standard practice. I don't agree with it, but that's the decision of the retailer. I think you are letting your opinion of this group outweigh what is truly right and wrong.

I didn't even read the group "opinion" before I made my comment. I rarely do.

I state my opinion with an unbiased thought process.

If you are in the Army and purchase night vision goggles and sell them does that make it ok?

If you get hand grenades and sell them, is that ok?

First of all, the ability for the "police" to buy these weapons at a reduced cost is NOT right.

This equipment should ONLY be issued and then, returned when the tour is complete. To allow them to be sold ONLY to low IQ'd morons is unforgiveable!

I didn't say "group opinion" I said your opinion of that group. Check yourself on that.

If you purchased them, it absolutely does make it ok for you to resell them. That's free market capitalism.

Issued items like M4's and grenades aren't purchased by the soldiers they are issued. If the soldier were to purchase a NV capable aimpoint, use it in tour and come home, he should give it to the government because he got a discount from the retailer?

That's anti capitalist and anti liberty.
