Sequester: Senate GOP Ponders Ceding Power to President Obama!

WHA --?!

Politico reports: Days before the March 1 deadline, Senate Republicans are circulating a draft bill that would cancel $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts and instead turn over authority to President Barack Obama to achieve the same level of savings under a plan to be filed by March 8.

The five- page document, which has the tacit support of Senate GOP leaders, represents a remarkable shift for the party. Having railed against Senate Democrats for not passing a budget, Republicans are now proposing that Congress surrender an important piece of its Constitutional “power of the purse” for the last seven months of this fiscal year.

As proposed, lawmakers would retain the power to overturn the president’s spending plan by March 22, but only under a resolution of disapproval that would demand two-thirds majorities in both the House and Senate to prevail over an Obama veto.

Soooo... Why do we have a Senate again???

Jim Demint has issued a short statement about the

ridiculous and scaremongering nature of the sequester yesterday.

Of course he never mentioned any solutions to the MASSIVE government spending problem.

Cut $1.3tn a year of Corporate Welfare, wasteful military spending and other extreme government waste as a first step.

See my other comment for the list of things to cut.

Jim Demints article has the graphic of planned Congressional spending into 2023 from the Congressional Budget office.
Planned spending gets to over $5tn by 2020 and SIX trillion in 2023.

"In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all -- security, comfort, and freedom. When ... the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free."

This is hardly a surprise

The scaremongering stories about the non event that is the sequester were specifically designed to lay the ground to ditch any spending cuts that might affect large Corporations.

I said so on my blog a few days ago.

Neither party is interested in ANY spending cuts, nor are they interested in reducing the size of government and they are certainly NOT interested in reducing the well over $1tn a year of subsidies to large Corporations in the form of Corporate Welfare and government waste.

Why the sequester is a giant con trick and why the government and the Federal Reserve are on the wrong path.

Graphic of planned Federal spending up to 2023 from the Congressional Budget Office and the negligible effect of the sequester is included on the above link.

Perhaps someone could add the graphic to the Op-Ed

The sequester is a giant con trick perpetrated by BOTH parties.

BOTH parties are scaremongering about a mere $85bn of cuts when there are well over $1tn of cuts to Corporate Welfare and other government waste that can be easily made.
Taxes on the middle class just got hiked by $200bn in the fiscal cliff deal.

BOTH parties are talking about cutting things that almost no one wants to see cut, so that eventually it is agreed that almost no cuts to government spending are made.

$85bn is a trivial amount when the government is spending $3.6tn a year.
It is less than 2.4%.

BOTH parties are scamming you in the worst possible way.

You could not make it up if you tried.

Examples of Corporate Welfare that can easily be cut.

$105bn a year for 7,000 mercenaries still in Iraq.
$170bn on building new and supplying existing foreign military bases.
$88bn per year on the Afghan war. Get out now.
$100bn+ of Medicare fraud.
Reduce the price of prescription drugs. America pays by far the highest prices in the world.
Stop the $200bn of new Corporate Pork a year.
Stop the futile war on drugs and save $200bn a year.
Fine the big banks $200bn+ for the harm they have done - it is easy to do.

Completely reform Corporation Tax.
Ending the tax avoidance by offshoring US generated profits and other tax breaks given to multinationals, banks and arms companies would bring in $200bn a year.

End the personal tax avoidance schemes like carried interest and hedge fund managers diverting their remuneration through reinsurance schemes would also bring in more revenues.

Make the taxation system FAIR. Don't favor the rich and large multinationals over the little guy and small businesses.

There are many other ways of saving money and making the marketplace fairer.
The above adds up to $1,300bn a year.
A lot more than that is possible.
Details in here :-

The sequester is a giant con trick in other ways too.
Congressional spending plans state that Federal spending will rise by nearly 50% in just 8 short years, to over $5tn in 2020.
The sequester makes a negligible difference - just $100bn of government spending in 2020 out of over $5tn.

The sequester is a mechanism for the large Corporations to keep all of their government subsidies, by distracting the public from what should really be being done.
ALL current policy by both parties is transferring the wealth of the middle class to large Corporations and a few selected rich elites.
Corporate profits are at record levels and so is poverty and the number of people on food stamps.

Current policy ensures there will be hundreds of millions of poor people in America and a handful of rich elites.
Current policy needs to be COMPLETELY REVERSED.

Cut well over $1tn a year from Corporate Welfare.
Use that money to reduce taxes on middle earners and below to raise disposable incomes and get bottom up spending going again.

Give a huge tax break to middle earners and below.
I favor increasing the tax thresh hold from $8,700 to $45,000 as the simplest way.
That would cost $500bn a year.

Give small businesses tax breaks and completely reform Corporation Tax.
Make Corporation Tax a 25% flat rate. No loopholes or tax breaks whatsoever.
This would slightly increase Corporate Tax revenues.

Make the first $100,000 of profits tax free.
That would give a huge tax break to small businesses.
It would also dramatically change for the better the risk/reward ratio of starting up a small business in the first place. There would be more small business start ups.

Simplifying the 7,200 page tax code would also reduce business overheads.
It would put a few accountants and tax lawyers out of a job. That is no bad thing - they are paper pushers and are an overhead to the productive economy.

Details of what should be being done to avoid a deep and prolonged recession and the demise of the Middle Class as a demographic in America.

Why the Federal Reserve is making things WORSE with more printing and increasing it's balance sheet.
The speculative banks already have $2tn of excess reserves.
They are using that money to speculate on things like food and gas.
They are pushing up food and gas prices and reducing disposable incomes that can be spent on everything else .
Goldman Sachs made $400m in 2012 pushing up food prices.
The price of gas just hit an all time record for February.

Why the Federal Reserve is making a sure fire losing bet and is going to hand taxpayers a HUGE multi trillion bill for their losses.
The frightening path that the Federal Reserve and the government have set out upon.

"In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all -- security, comfort, and freedom. When ... the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free."

Disappointed by some comments here. Clearly this is a political strategy, but in no way does that make it okay. Now they want the President to not only have the power to initiate/instigate war (formal declaration apparently not required), but they want to hand over the purse too. They're more concerned with blame than with actually holding on to one of the last ways in which the congress has any power not ceded to the executive. As long as they protect their campaign, salary, and perks they're content to give all power to the president. Disgusting...and some here try to make it sound remotely okay simply because of its strategic nature?

bigmikedude's picture

That's kind of how I see it.

They are more concerned with party maneuvering and tactic games for re-election than accomplishing anything.

Ah the dance of power, but

Ah the dance of power, but this little political dance is but a mere sideshow to the main event, on hold until the day the people turn their attention to the power behind the curtain of debt - only then will the dance be worth watching.

Why would the GOP even consider this?

Once they've done it once they have set precedent.

Once it's done any President will be able to use executive power to do it again and claim 'national security'.

There are some seriously retarded senators in Washington.

They must be utterly insane. Cede power to the executive for some dubious political posturing? Total insanity.

They ARE crazy: for POWER. They want power for THEMSELVES!

They are crazy: for power. They want POWER for THEMSELVES!

Just like Obama eased into George W.'s chair and assumed all of the criminal and unconstitutional executive authority ceded to the Presidency by the ridiculous dupes in the Congress, so the Republicans intend to win the White House next election and wield all the authority Obama was ceded by the same collection of nitwits.

From the center of the web spreads the strongest threads of power. The party will benefit from this, providing they can win another election. Which is doubtful.

Does Rand Endorse This?

Anyone know?

I don't understand why this would surprise anyone.

The whole sequester drama is just a puppet show.

They want Obama to own the cuts

The game here folks, since the American people are stupid, selfish, and lack courage to do the right thing is to make sure that Obama owns the cuts. They want to be able to say Obama specifically selected whatever cuts are made. Obama of course is an even bigger coward than most American regular citizens so he never suggests anything hard. Then sits back and whines that the GOP are evil bastards. He is a despicable human being, a sociopathic tyrant. Zero conscience.

And these turkeys swore to protect and defend the Constitution?

This is a complete dereliction of duty on the part of Congress. It is they who are empowered to tax and spend, not the President. He just carries out the laws they pass.

They are leading us down the road to ruin, and out of that revolution or civil war will come.

"Bend over and grab your ankles" should be etched in stone at the entrance to every government building and every government office.

What? Really! One needs to understand that these treasonous "jokers" in the US Congress don't care one iota about the US taxpayer, but ONLY their political party. How much more proof is required for political parties to be BANNED immediately?

Not Bad...

I don’t think a lot of people here are getting this.

I realize that most of us here do not buy into many of the philosophical principles of the establishment GOP, and we remember full well the nasty tactics that they employed against us during the campaign, for which they are despised, but I think we would be remiss to just right them off as complete morons.

I think they're quite aware of what's coming down the pipe.

You just can not Cede

puppet power.

at least they

are consistant. The GOP is toast get out while you can.

Ceding from the "More Perfect Union?" to "Monopoly of One?"

Cede for a mere 1% of a spendthrift government?

Cede 50 states to one man in 300 million?

Is it even a question? Neither is noble. Neither is worthy of such a prize.

I Have Differing View

They want to hand Obama the problem and make him solve it.

It still has to pass the house.

Calm down.

Not saying I agree with it, just that it's an interesting ploy.

The Democrats don't have to actually offer any plans or solutions.

Due to the fact that they have the media on their side.

They don't want to fix anything because then they lose an issue.

Rand Paul talked about this as it relates to immigration reform.

The Democrats don't want to solve it, because then they can't hit GOP over it.

So I believe this is another trick to try and force the Dems to prove just how political they really are.

Will Obama provide a plan that makes him OWN IT?

I kind of like it.

(Unless I'm not understanding it..)

Why am I not surprised?

Typical American government- doing everything #ss backwards and throwing the rule book out the window. The sooner this horrible excuse of a circus falls apart, the better.

In other words, a

In other words, a pusillanimous Senate, or rather just a handful of the usual suspects, will attempt to feather the nest of the executive branch to decide on how little will be cut.

Are you aware of how little this all matters over 40 years?

The difference in sequester or not is negligible. Near zero difference (40 years vs 42 years is it?).

Look at these two sequester lines (w/ vs w/o):

Far sooner, we will be in bread lines if we don't mend our government's spendthrift ways.

Southern Agrarian

How can they be called conservative Republicans?

"But the plan appears to have the backing of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and is being advanced by conservative Republicans who don’t want the White House to continue using the sequester as a public relations hammer."

Rand needs to have a talk with Benton and Mitch.

Not a hammer at all.

Too thin to even notice. Here is a simple chart to show the errors of our spendthrift ways are not mended! Sequester as debated is lost in round-off error.

The hammer metaphor does not apply. Neither line (w/ or w/o) comes down. The hammer would soon be 'Lost in Sspace.'

End the Fed - Ron Paul.
