Why Are Giant Sinkholes Appearing All Over America? Is Something Happening To The Earth's Crust?

March 3rd, 2013 | End of the American Dream

Where are all of these giant sinkholes coming from? Of course there have always been sinkholes, but over the past few years it seems like both the severity and the number of giant sinkholes has been increasing dramatically. So exactly why are so many giant sinkholes appearing all over America all of a sudden? Is something happening to the earth’s crust, or is there some other explanation?

The “experts” are blaming this epidemic of sinkholes on things like loose soil, acidic groundwater, new construction, leaky water pipes, coal mines, fracking, long periods of drought followed by rain, and depletion of underground aquifers, but do they really understand what is going on?

On Thursday, a 37-year-old man named Jeffrey Bush living near Tampa, Florida died when the earth underneath his home suddenly opened up and swallowed him alive.

His brother tried to help him when he heard Jeffrey screaming, but it was too late. The entire bedroom was sucked deep into the earth and the home had to be rapidly abandoned. Now authorities are admitting that he will probably never be found. So is this type of thing really “normal”? It would be one thing if this was just an isolated incident, but the truth is that giant sinkholes have been appearing with increasing frequency all over the planet lately.

Could this be an indication that major earth changes are on the way?

Acid rain seepage washes away limestone, sand ,salt , chalk.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/04/what-causes-sink...
"Natural sinkholes – as opposed to man-made tunnel or cave collapses – occur when acidic rainwater seeps down through surface soil and sediment, eventually reaching a soluble bedrock such as sandstone, chalk, salt or gypsum, or (most commonly) a carbonate rock such as limestone beneath. "

Bayou Corne sinkhole was caused by salt mining and exploratory oil drilling. This is an amazing video showing the sinkhole actually forming and explains how it happened. This sinkhole is many acres now and continues to grow and give off methane gas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uzk36vf16Ug

Came to post about karst limestone, saw it was already posted.

They are just being reported more often

Just like Hurricanes, sink holes have been forming forever. It is just that 'news' gets around the world quicker and now we have millions of reporters.

this is really interesting

and wouldn't it be awesome if when they government comes to take your guns a sinkhole opens right underneath them?! hah

To the best of my understanding, Biblically, this type of thing will happen more and more and is a sign of the end times - natural disasters and such.

Isaiah 2:4
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

two much water being pumped out of the ground

for irrigation, cities, and bottled water. Another problem there seems to be more plastic floating in the ocean than there is plankton.

Are there really more or do

Are there really more or do we just hear about them more often? Is it now just more likely that the area one appears in is populated?

Incorrect, most oil bearing

Incorrect, most oil bearing formations are several thousand feet below the surface. Think of groundwater, which can be as little as ten feet below the surface.

thanks for clearing this up

qoute from your post

"Most geologists agree, though, that it is unlikely that oil and gas extraction could contribute to or cause major earthquakes, which are generated at depths far deeper than would be practical to drill for oil or gas"

PS-I am one of those geologist that disagree with you.

Unlikely doesn't mean absolutely not.

And scientists have been wrong before.

I'd like to point out too that your quote is only ONE thing that was said whereas there were a number of others that leaned toward this being a possibility.

Yes, scientists have been

Yes, scientists have been wrong many times. But I would guess that people who are not knowledgeable on subjects and make up their own theories as to why/how things happen purely based on intuition... they are wrong a lot more often than scientists. I do not really care to argue on the subject any further.. agree to disagree

Sure but when those people go on intuion and then find

collaborating scientific opinions one begins to think that it might be a possibility.

I'm far more right on my intuitions than the average person and even some well schooled scientists at times. My deductions are fine.

Yes, some scientists and myself will have to disagree with your scientist and yourself.

Karst Topography

It's karst topography. You'll see sinkholes in places like Texas and Florida because of the geology. There is a layer of limestone below the surface. The limestone reacts to elements carried into the ground by water. As the limestone deteriorates, it's possible to have sinkholes. I could be wrong, but I work in the oilfield and I'm almost definitely sure there is no man-induced hydraulic fracturing in Florida. Especially in Tampa.

Actually an interesting

Actually an interesting thought here. We have been pumping stuff into the atmosphere causing rain to become more acidic. The fact that the limestone is disolving and causing sinkholes at what seems a more rapid rate would make sense if you take the acidity into account since the industrial revolution. It would take a bit of time, but the lime stone disolution rate would increase and cause the sinkholes. Not to mention that general runoff from cities today and in the last decades are loaded with various chemicals etc.

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

Exactly.

Tannic acid from oak and other trees make the ground water highly acidic and it reacts with the limerock layer just beneath the surface.

You're correct there is no

You're correct there is no fracking occurring in Florida and even though there is fracking happening in Texas "sinkholes" aren't that common there, They are most common in China but they happen all over the globe.

Dude it's completely normal,

Dude it's completely normal, florida is almost completely made of limestone which starts to break down when exposed to acidic rain water, the way Tampa is geologically allows acidic ground water to leak beneath the city plus Florida's rain water has a pH of about 4.5. This is in no way a conspiracy theory but more just ignoring scientific facts.

Eight years ago I mentioned to an American Indian friend

my interest in renewable fuels. He said that, if half the oil is pulled out of the planet, wouldn't it be like pulling half the oil out of a car?

Changed my whole perspective, man.

Stop.

Stop.

If it's true that there are many now appearing...

...I would guess that fracking is a likely suspect.

I've mentioned it before on here that my biggest concern w/ the free market economy that we are pushing for is the environment. I'm not saying I like the system we have now. I know it's corrupt and bad things are done under the guise of "it's for the environment".

But let's say fracking were the cause of these issues. Isn't it too late to repair what has already been done? And what if the damage exceeds the amount of money that the drilling companies have? That means there's no monetary compensation for people whose rights have been violated. And why would we assume that judges would ever be fair if fracking were put on trial? Wouldn't the energy companies just buy them off?

Am I being too pessimistic here? Sometimes I think we're all overly idealistic. Not every problem has a nice and tidy solution to it. I also wonder if fracking is going to cause irreparable harm to land, water and air in this country (and others too since fracking goes on in plenty of countries).
