Rand Paul stops confirmation of CIA director for one day due to drone killings of Americans (RT)

United States Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) began a filibuster on the floor of the US Capitol Building on Wednesday with the intention of halting President Barack Obama’s nominee for the position of CIA director.

Lawmakers in Washington were gathered to finalize plans to confirm John Brennan as the next head of the Central Intelligence Agency on Wednesday, but Sen. Paul took the floor just shy of 12 noon and told colleagues that he would speak out against the president’s pick for as long as he had to in order to prevent the appointment from being finalized.

The son of former presidential contender and congressman Ron Paul continued for hours, gaining support from members of both major political parties in opposing the president’s nomination.

“This is not about partisanship,” said the Republican senator, who claimed to have affirmed other choices made by the democratic president. Rather, Sen. Paul said that the matter at hand — the use of unmanned aerial vehicles to execute US citizens without a trial — was one that was so polarizing that lawmakers from both sides of the aisle couldn’t help but align on his team.

“It's not partisan against partisan; it's bipartisan working for the power of the checks and balances to try to ensure a leveling,” tweeted a member of the senator’s social media team during his address as it stretched into the evening.

Dammit!

I just turned on C-SPAN to confirm that the nomination went down the toilet and was immediately subjected to John McCain. (Oh, great, now Lindsey Graham...)

Your headline is very misleading. Right on the tv screen, it says "Nomination of John Brennan to be CIA Director vote possible later".

Not to take it out on you, Houkie, but, I am getting really annoyed with misleading titles.

Apologies

I agree Nonna - I should have changed the title. I just copied and pasted the article title. But it is a bit misleading. I changed it.

Score One Point For A Continuation Of Constitutional "LAW" !

Good job Rand.

beesting

Does anyone else find it more than a little

ironic that Obama put forth this legislation which could murder Americans without trial AND AT THE SAME TIME basically wants all Americans fully disarmed ? Coincidence ??

Just one last kick in the nuts, then a final deathblow

Without the 2nd, filibuster is moot.

We have many battles which need utmost attention.

I disagree

The fillabuster delivered a very important message to the American people. It's still front page news on MSN and Yahoo, Google:

Paul put the 'bust' in filibuster

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., walks out of the Capitol after his filibuster. (Charles Dharapak - AP) Sen. Rand Paul's filibuster wrapped up during the wee hours this morning at a not-too-shabby 13 hours.

Drones killing innocent Americans is an utmost issue, and what's so great about Rand, is he's not just bringing up utmost issues, which yes, there are many, but he is doing something and offering solutions.

Agree, disagree, back, forth, etc.

Rand set the stage on an extremely important issue. But I will rephrase so that you will understand:

What good is filibuster, what good are civil rights, what good is the Bill of Rights, if an individual can not utilize them?

Without the 2nd, without the 'individual' defending and protecting their inherent rights, the rest of the Bill of Rights will be moot, as will that filibuster.

So, what is there to disagree with? Unless you are exorcising your writing skills ;-)

What good is a messanger without teeth?

Rand delivered a message, and that message got teeth because he has stopped the appointment of Brennan, and the USA is revewing it's domestic drone policy, which will open the foor to drone policy globally. That is what good this fillabuster did.. watering it down to a race against time and Sen Byrd's record is not the goal.. let's not be derailed ocer who got there first or who stood the lobgest, but what the message means to liberty, including the global scale, that was not the point of the fillabuster, but will become a point because of it.

"OK mr. Paul. But extra judicial murder of anyone anywhere is also wrong. there is nothing exceptional about Americans in their own country. Drones murdering people in Pakistan or Yemen or anywhere else has always been and will always be immoral and cowardly as well as illegal"

Well there you go again...

I'm going to be a dick and point out what a great comment that was.

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution, inevitable.

I couldn't agree with you more--

but I also see the need of sticking with the idea that this is America, and America should abide by *her* constitution--first, before worrying about the rest of the world.

That's just step #1.

Then, if *we* can do that, maybe the violence can stop elsewhere.

Maybe. Not sure. Americans do seem very caught up in *themselves*--

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

*her* Constitution covers all human beings

But Rand doesn't even do that.. He called for robbers caught in the act to be droned.. Did you not here that maybe?

So anyone who is drinking the Rand koolaid thinking it's orange juice is dreaming.

Thanks rp4pres :-)

That was one of the holes that I was talking about. Don't get me wrong, what Rand did was a major stride, one that noone else took the initiative to do. But some of these holes, like the one above, are going to be taken advantage of because they were not presented, or presented correctly.

I can be a real dick too. But nobody can dispute that I strive for truth, and love my country :-)

Man, it seems that we are the irate minority, among the minority! lol

Rand isn't perfect, but what he did took courage--

I am not sure I could have done it. Well, for one thing, I have never run for a public office, and for another--

I would probably collapse from hunger and thirst and would have needed to 'excuse' myself hours before he did.

I applaud what he did, even if it wasn't seen as 'perfect' by most of *us*. I saw the holes, but I also saw that people watched.

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

It didn't take courage.. it took doing his job

I can't remember the last time I was called a hero for making a sign on time.

I think there are more of us, most are less vocal. I'm in touch with a few that feel the same way I do, locally.
