TheYoungTurks: Drone Strikes - Is Rand Paul a Constitutional Hero?

"Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) announced on the Senate floor Wednesday he intended to filibuster the nomination of John Brennan as director of the CIA, citing concerns about President Barack Obama's policy on civil liberties.

"I will speak until I can no longer speak," Paul said."*

As much as we may agree with the bulk of Rand Paul's stances, he may deserve to be called a hero for standing up against John Brennan's nomination to CIA director based on his and Obama's stance that Americans could be able to be killed by drones on American soil. Cenk Uygur makes the case.

Rand may not have achieved a

Rand may not have achieved a clear political victory with this, especially with the nomination going through after the White House reponse. However, Rand had achieved a major ideological blow to the 2 party paradigm as illustrated by TYT here. Democrats are slowly seeing through the Obama facade and something will be needed to fill the political vaccuum.

Now, more than ever, I have hope for a new political party or a completely revamped Conservative party based on the principles of non-intervention, Constitutional Government and sound currency. I was happy when Romney lost because I saw the chess pieces move toward our favor and now Rand is making the push he needs to.

Our next moves need to be to continue to address drones in other countries and expose the DHS armored vehicle sales as that should scare the Sh!t out of any American. A big push by Rand on the FED would be a good idea too exposing how we are reinflating the bubble just like 2006.

In any case, Rand needs to push forward on his own and draw the lines in the sand for what other Senators will follow him and who will fall by the wayside.

We all share this eternally evolving present moment- The past and future only exist as inconsequential mental fabrications.

Oops double post...

Oh, Magna Carta

We have our libertarian litmus tests.

Now, pre- or post-Magna Carta -- that's how we need to present some of these issues to statists. Fine, you're a statist, are you a pre- or post- Magna Carta statist?

Issue by issue, we can show that a slippery slope is passe, that we're already in full tumble.

Defend Liberty!

I like how some of you still

I like how some of you still continue to attack Cenk, even though he is one of few liberals who stood up for his constitutional principles. This should held to the highest regard. Liberals and progressives like Cenk are the kind of people we need on our side.

Liberty doesn't just apply to republicans, but rather all americans. The more that understand the constitution and stand up on issues like this, the better.

The reason why some here don't like Cenk

is because he believes in Global Warming and he thought Ron Paul endorsed those "racist newsletters".

Al Gore and his carbon credits...PFFFT.

If you don't know your rights, you don't have any.

On the newsletters, Cenk

On the newsletters, Cenk specifically attacked Ron Paul for not defending himself better. Ron Paul tried to treat it as a non-issue, and Cenk considered that unacceptable.

Basically, Cenk's points were that:

1) The newsletters were terrible, while Ron Paul seemed to shrug them off.

2) Ron Paul blamed the media for going after him, even though the media would have roasted ANY politician who had the same history.

3) Cenk showed video of Ron Paul in the 80s attacking racist policies, and then basically asked the question "why do I have to look up reasons why Ron Paul isn't a racist? He should be presenting this evidence to me! The fact that he seems to think the newsletters are no big issue makes it so damning, even though all these quotes we have suggest he isn't racist".

you are right. but cenk is

you are right. but cenk is still a chump.

i am glad cenk and joan cusack and code pink, and others are separating themselves from the authoritarian psychopaths.

Misquoted perhaps?

Didn't he really say;

"I will sPEAk until I can no longer sPEAk," Paul said."

A+ Cenk. Although he

A+ Cenk. Although he distanced himself from 90% of Rand Paul, at least he had the nerve to come out with Rand on this important issue and to urge lefties to do likewise.

Rand is a genius for getting behind this issue and using his clever and crafty calculations to bring it prominently to the public, politicians, and pundits, and to make this a bipartisan issue that should appeal to the skepticism of all Americans.

Regardless what you think of

Regardless what you think of the "Turks" this is a hugely important video. Because the way you win a Presidency is if the general masses like you and think you ARE different, not one of the average "idiots" in Washington that only follow party lines. That's what everyone thought of Obama. Thought he stood for something, some sort of change. They grew to like him, didn't care as much about policies. If that is happening with Rand - that is HUGE.

CENK - "i disagree with about 90% of what rand says"

cenk - "i disagree with about 90% of what rand paul says"

really "young jerk"

no respect for him , fuck young jerks

Much Respect to Cenk Uygur

It wouldn't matter so much how many Libertarians there are, or how loudly we are heard, if the core moral virtues of both the right and the left were actually championed over party affiliation...

Whenever I see someone who is consistent, honest, and principled, on the right or left it gives me some hope. Even if I do disagree from time to time, I'd rather be challenged on my believes honestly by someone like that, then be forced to play their game of subterfuge...

You're kidding?

Is that guys name really Cenk Uygur?!

I thought that was some sort of disease of the colon?

It is...isn't it?

Congressman Cruz: If US Citizen on US soil does not pose threat

Congressman Cruz ask repeatedly. If a US Citizen on US soil does not pose an imminent treat, is it within the authority of the US Constitution to kill with a drone strike?

Eric Holder Admits Killing {it would not be polite to strike} Americans With Drones on U.S. Soil... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMk0AgncXUI 5 minute congressional testimony. Cut to the heart at about 3 minutes.

Disclaimer: Mark Twain (1835-1910-To be continued) is unlicensed. His river pilot's license went delinquent in 1862. Caution advised. Daily Paul

I will believe Rand is the real deal when a Republican is pres

I can't be convinced that if Romney were currently president that Rand would have stood up. If Rand Paul stands up to a republican president, That will be my personal indicator that he is acting on principle and not political gain.

true, you can't know right now

I agree with your skepticism. And this is largely why we elect the opposite party so much. The Dems won't go after another Dem, so we have to turn to Republicans for change (and vice versa).

But he did provide a hugely important role by doing what he did...to spark change even if it might have been for the wrong reasons. Now we have the possibility of change. Now, can we find some honest politicians?

The person really shining in this is actually Senator Ron Wyden, the sole Democrat that made it to the floor.

Wary eye is warranted, to be sure

I'm not taking any of it very seriously though. I just don't have to make any decisions right now. I did whip up a batch of brownies for him.... metaphorically.
The thing that gags me like a maggot about Rand is not about politics at all, it is about ophthalmology and pot. Glaucoma is currently "managed" - they SLOW the progression, often slow enough that you die before you go blind. Yay. Marijuana STOPS the damage from being done. No drug on the market comes close to doing what marijuana does. Pot is neuroprotective, and it is the optic nerve that is lost in "glaucoma." For him to play politics on this one just frosts my cookies.
Yep. Just thinking about it, I'm taking brownies off the plate.

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

Uh....this topic is about Rand Paul

Not dope.

You do know that....don't you?

Rand Paul is a doctor. An ophthalmologist.

You do know that... don't you? His medical ethics will be consistent with his political ones. He walks the Pharma walk, talks the Pharma talk.

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

Rand Paul is against Federal marijuana laws and you should know that...

He also sponsored The Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2013.

Supporters of industrial hemp gained a powerful ally in Washington several weeks ago when Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) joined fellow Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul and Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) as a co-sponsor of S.359, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2013

Can you provide links?

The only time I heard him talk about marijuana, he said he would not recommend it. I devoted a career to ophthalmology, too. It galls me at the level of a healthcare provider who actually cared about the health of the patients. Of all the people in medicine, it is ophthalmologists who ought to be DEMANDING access to an herb that could prevent blindness - a MAJOR cause of blindness at that. Check out these top two of the four "glaucoma facts" on this site:
"1. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness
Glaucoma can cause blindness if it is left untreated. And unfortunately approximately 10% of people with glaucoma who receive proper treatment still experience loss of vision.
2. There is no cure (yet) for glaucoma
Glaucoma is not curable, and vision lost cannot be regained. With medication and/or surgery, it is possible to halt further loss of vision. Since open-angle glaucoma is a chronic condition, it must be monitored for life. Diagnosis is the first step to preserving your vision."

There is no cure, BUT THERE IS A PREVENTION. Note they leave that little factoid out. As Rand does. And so today, somewhere in this country, someone will begin to sob as the lights, dim for months now, go out. They will never see their loved one's face again, they will never watch a sunset, they will never look in the mirror and fuss with their hair... and it could have been prevented.

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

good for you Cenk

At least we can agree on one thing.

It was of no consequence

So Rand blabbed for 12 hours or so?

He still thinks Guantanamo is alright, he hasn't protested much of the illegal wars and probably isn't much interested in getting rid of the "patriot" act. Now he complains about drones being used? Of what matter is that? Which is cheaper- drones or bullets? Bullets. So the POWER will kill you with bullets unless you're some hick in the middle of nowhere and in a place where they can minimize "collateral damage".

He didn't bring the US drone situation to the attention of the world. The entire world knows it already and the stupid American people don't even care.

Since when has the US government ever been concerned about the legality of something?

People have this notion that the POWER will be flying the Predator drones around to blow you to smitherenes in the middle of some $200,000 development of houses. That's not likely to happen. It's a lot cheaper to send over the police to pick you up at work...or where you least expect it.

Frankly I think the government is trying to work out a deal with homeowner's insurance companies to provide some sort of indemnification for their actions.

Here's the bottom line of his talk;

- he proved he could hold his bladder for a long time.

- he demonstrated to a few desperate people that when he is running for president in 2016 he can say he stood to defend their constitutional rights.

I'm not so unrealistic as to think this was nothing other than a worthless effort and a waste of time. It was merely political theater. You are deluded if you think otherwise.

As someone who thinks that

As someone who thinks that Rand Paul is a vacuous, stupid retard with an elementary-school philosophy, you have to give him credit where credit is due.

No consequence my ass

No consequence my ass. Many liberals are questioning their chosen one now, just check the comments and reactions. Many people who simply didn't care or were unaware are now talking about drone strikes.

He's the only one who has the balls to challenge Obama's constitutional power grab. Maybe you're ok with letting Eric Holder claim power to assassinate American citizens on American soil but im not. I'm glad he stood up, and I'm glad he brought attention to the issue.

It must be easy being a pessimistic keyboard commando but lighten up, get off your high horse, and give credit where credit is due.

Fancy talk

Where you 5 years ago?

Talking about "power grabs"; the glorious "constitution" was the biggest slick power grab in this entire country's history.

In one short period of time this country went from a decentralized government to a centralized system which has provided us with all the benefits of tyranny.

Patrick Henry was opposed to the constitution.

If the thing was so simple to understand then there would've been no need for an interpretation of what any of the Amendments mean.

All Rand said were a bunch of words that accomplished nothing.

The POWER is going to do what it wants to do and there's not much you or I can do about it.

The average cluck doesn't care two hoots about drones over the US....so long as they can move one of their fingers to wipe their stupid iPhones, play "twitter" and text message games, get assinine tattoos, watch the circuses of sports and TV they could care less.

Mandatory "health" insurance was never stopped.

We've never been able to get rid of the social security system.

We couldn't stop the Bailout (you weren't around back then).

We haven't been able to stop voter fraud.

We haven't been able to "End the Fed".

We haven't been able to end the secret prisons, torture, rendition, and illegal wars.

Heck, we weren't even able to stop the CFL light bulb fiasco!!!!

So what makes you think any of you will be able to have an effect upon the current state of affairs?!

All we can do is suffer under it and pray some good will come. As to the latter point I wouldn't count on it.

Correct RS

Rand "Mitt Romney for President" Paul is just another run of the mill political prostitute. As Krauthamer points out, he may be a little more shrewd and adept than some of his peers, but he is just a huckster nonetheless.

Anyway your comment is encouraging because it shows there are still a few people frequenting this website that are operating in something other than sycophant mode, willing to critically analyze Rand and recognize that at best he is a weak ally of the liberty movement and at worst he is in full scale subversion mode.

But I'm very disappointed. I've only been marked down 10 times (one of those was my own...of course) and I was hoping for more.

There are a lot of dreamers out there. Those are the clowns that want to go out in a blaze of glory- The Red Neck army!

As for me- peace and no violence is the only path to take.

rand a weak ally ?? really??

really, rand paul is a "weak ally" to liberty

care to name any strong allies to liberty in senate or congress or anywhere for that matter ?

"He's this eccentric Ghandi-Like figure that you cant touch with the normal bribes that people respond to."
the man Doug Wead on DR. RON PAUL

He's a nobody

What good has any of them done us?

All they do is take our money and rub our faces in more burdensome laws that only enrich their masters and make us poorer.

Ron Paul was THE BEST and he accomplished practically nothing within the federal govt. However, and it goes without saying, he has taught us all so much about liberty, freedom and virtue. He is loved by millions world wide. There is no politician alive that is loved by so many people on Earth.

Rand? The acorn fell far from the tree.

You all will be so disappointed in future years by Rand's work.
