WaPo: Rand Paul: My Filibuster Was Just the Beginning

If I had planned to speak for 13 hours when I took the Senate floor Wednesday, I would’ve worn more comfortable shoes. I started my filibuster with the words, “I rise today to begin to filibuster John Brennan’s nomination for the CIA. I will speak until I can no longer speak” — and I meant it.

I wanted to sound an alarm bell from coast to coast. I wanted everybody to know that our Constitution is precious and that no American should be killed by a drone without first being charged with a crime. As Americans, we have fought long and hard for the Bill of Rights. The idea that no person shall be held without due process, and that no person shall be held for a capital offense without being indicted, is a founding American principle and a basic right.

Ahoy mate! Avast! Be at ye ready. A Filibuster yonder be!

Filibuster~ ~ Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, 1913 (Page: 559)
Fil"i*bus`ter (?), n. [Sp. flibuster, flibustero, corrupted fr. E. freebooter. See Freebooter.] A lawless military adventurer, especially one in quest of plunder; a freebooter.

Originally applied to buccaneers infesting the Spanish American coasts, but introduced into common English to designate the followers of Lopez in his expedition to Cuba in 1851, and those of Walker in his expedition to Nicaragua, in 1855.

"...no American should be killed by a drone without first being charged with a crime..."

Misspoke Rand?

How about no American should be killed by the government by any means unless found guilty of a crime and sentenced to capital punishment?

At the very least...

Don't you remember who is against Capital Punishment?

That's right... Ron Paul.

How about NO American should be killed by the American Govt. period. Life in prison, perhaps, but NO govt. should every have the right to kill, except perhaps from outside ATTACKING forces.

Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it. ~Thomas Paine

That's cool with me

I was taking into account that capital punishment exists, doesn't need to, but merely being charged with a crime to justify a drone attack?

Welcome to the USSA.

To be fair

Ron Paul said he used to believe in the death penalty for a while, too, and later grew and became against it. Perhaps Rand will be the same, believing in it at first and then learning more and coming to be against it.

How about it? He began this, but WE must complete it!

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Rand Paul can't do EVERYTHING for us! He began the ball rolling yesterday with his remarkable filibuster. You, I, and the rest of the American people have to take it from there!

"At the very least..."

Exactly. My worst fear is that new precedence will be set. They have been working on this for years behind closed doors. There is no doubt that they have contemplated every scenaro that opposition presents. It is crucial that we procede with extreme caution, and that includes the use of words.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

So very true

Its great to have him in the senate trying to establish sop's & limitations from the federal side for drones here in the US.

@ previous poster on the subject of murder. RP does not believe in the death penalty; yet acknowledges that the rights are reserved by the states & are critical in overturning R~v~W. I suspect this will be a critical asset towards creating a rule of law governing a responsible use of drones as well(Face it; they're not going away).

Rand is fighting within the parameters of the current belief of implied functions and powers of the federal gov. He was also on his feet for 13hrs saying the exact same thing over & over just slightly different each time. So don't get too caught up in his wording. He's trying to get the federal to acknowledge and establish what they believe to be their boundaries within the constitution.

But its still up to the grassroots to participate in local & state gov. to establish legislation banning the use of lethal force from drones.

Work has to be done on both sides until there is balance. Face it, this Orwelian-Star Wars hybrid conundrum our country is facing may very well set the example for other countries as they begin to employ drones.

To echo proudamerican: " It is crucial that we procede with extreme caution"

So many Americans have been

So many Americans have been waiting for somebody in Washington, D.C. to finally take a stand - for us.

I think a lot of Americans saw what happened, and said, "Finally! A politician with a backbone! Who is this guy?"

Thank you, Rand. Here is to a job well done Senator Paul...cheers.

Never be afraid to ask simple questions.

Yes yes yes!

The stage is set. Ears and eyes are opening that never were before. We've got work to do, everyone!

Thanks for the post. You go get em Rand, drag them kicking and screaming back to the limitations of the Constitution.

The bold effort the present bank had made to control the government ... are but premonitions of the fate that await the American people should they be deluded into a perpetuation of this institution or the establishment of another like it-Andrew Jackson
