Active duty soldier forgot to log out of his gmail account on a "community" PC at a cigar bar...

So, I'm delivering a few boxes to a Cigar Lounge here in town and was waiting for the manager to come up front to sign the delivery receipt. I wasn't in a hurry since its Saturday and I didn't have many stops on my route today. There's a community PC located in the cigar "bar" lounge that I occasionally use to see whats happening on the DP or to check my email when I have a few extra minutes.

Anyhow...today when I sat down in front of the computer I realized that someone had forgotten to log off their gmail account. They had recently received an airline conformation number via email and a prompt box was open asking if the conformation was to be printed. I clicked no and decided to see if the account had any saved contacts. It had over 250! The contacts were even catagorized into groups such as work, family, friends, etc.

I checked the sent items and determined that the guy was an active duty soldier who had recently returned from the middle east. The inbox had a ton of emails. Most had been read but it appears the guy never deleted anything. There was an email from Senator Grassly having to do with some paperwork that the guy was needing to fill out relating to his transition back home from overseas and there were bunches of emails coming from and going to .mil addresses.

I decided to take the opportunity at hand and send out an email to his entire contact list. Obviously this was unexpected so I didn't know what to send but I decided to send a link to the 14 minute video from Architects & Engineers for 9/11 truth that talks about building 7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ONo...

and...I also included a link to http://wanttoknow.info/ If I'm not mistaken wantoknow.info was one of the sites that helped wake me up.

Who knows if the people that receive the email will click on the links but hopefully they will. I did log off the email account after sending the educational information to all of his friends, family, and co-workers.

By the way,

remind me to never invite you over to my house. I hope one day you forget to close your front door so someone sees that as an invitation in. Then he can sleep in your bed, crap in your toilet, and eat all your food. Oh yeah, I forgot. He can also reply to all your bill collectors and personal mail on your behalf.

That would be a criminal act.

Using a public computer in a public place to tell the truth is not a crime.

Free includes debt-free!

I wouldn't count on that.

You impersonated someone, and sent mail in their name. Unless you put a disclaimer in your email that would make it clear that the sender was not who it appeared to be, then what you did is in fact a crime in many jurisdictions. In Texas, it's a felony.

But you know what? That isn't even the point. You cannot spread justice by unjust means. You will not gain respect by being reprehensible. You will not raise consciousness if you have no conscience. You undermine your own goals by acting in this manner. I beseech you to stop and think of a better way.

I'm happy to be your -50 vote, go213mph.

You're welcome.

I haven't liked you since a few posts prior to this thread of yours (I posted this commented to you)

And like another DP user in this thread recently had mentioned: what's your email & password?

You're an idiot.

Job

well done, i just watched the video you posted to all of his contacts. If he ever watches the video himself he maybe conflicted with the truth.

There is no problem with spreading what you view as truth. You did not degrade/hack/slander anyone in your process which i think is cool. And if you did that is between you and God. Some people here are probably sensitive because it says "Soldiers Email" as if he is different than you and I. As for posting it on the DP i thank you for the reading material, Rands filibuster is getting a little old. Im glad you seem to be in the business of changing the hearts and minds of men. Keep any tactic you have on the table fair and open game.

Im pretty sure most people on here only use this for coffee shop filler time while hiding behind their earphones and when push comes would reject the liberty movement forgetting that this is a revolution. What made V for Vendetta so badass? Because he did drastic things when needed, he was sly graceful and had a personal conviction to change the paradigm any way possible.

As the good Doctor advocates :
“Speak up, speak often and don’t worry about those that at this point can not understand as they can never un-hear what we tell them.”

c : activity or movement designed to effect fundamental changes in the socioeconomic situation
d : a fundamental change in the way of thinking about or visualizing something : a change of paradigm
e : a changeover in use or preference especially in technology

"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect" - Mark Twain

It's wrong whether the impostered victim is a soldier or not.

The OP could've referred to him as John Q. Public and it would've been just as wrong.

Just because the person stepped away and forgot to log themselves out does not entitle someone else to unauthorized use of their email account.

If you left your address book or little black book or client rolodex or whatever out on the table and stepped away, it would not be ok for someone to go thru it and contact everyone in it posing as you.

You say you're glad the OP seems to be in the business of changing the hearts and minds of men. In this instance, I serously doubt the impostered victim's or his contacts' hearts and minds will be changed favorably toward the spam. Rather, just the opposite is more likely to be the case.

When I receive spam emails, especially under the guise of someone in my contact list who has had their account taken over by virus or hacker, I am not persuaded in the least toward what they sent. Instead, I am turned off by it. It makes no difference to me what is in the link.

Go213mph has posted some good threads on this site. This is not one of them. He exercised poor judgement, and people making excuses for it or condoning it are not helping in the least.

jiminy crickets

people are acting like he killed someone. This was as harmless as flicking a fly in my view. If you disagree well i cant change that. I think it was rather funny and wise. Then again im the type who laughs when a dog drags his butt on the floor or someone slips and falls. One thing i am glad to know is that we do have a pretty stand up crowd her at the DP for sure. That video he posted is pretty hard hitting with very truthful knowledge. If it gets into the heart or mind of any one of those 250 recipients, then it was well worth it.

Progressive journalist forgot to log out of his gmail account

Just that small change would have made all the difference to many here?

I agree. No harm no foul.

You certainly should NEVER be a Peace Officer

Too many think like you do... not all, but too many.

Your opinion of the person you are dealing with has NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR RIGHTS and their expectation of privacy, etc..

It matters NOT who the person is or who's gmail account, car, home, etc.. They ALL (friend or foe) ALL have the same rights to be secure in their persons, place and effects.

The requirement to do right is on YOU. You don't get to look around at others violating rights as an excuse to do something wrong yourself.

You are either making this

You are either making this story up or are a sicko

You should delete this post

Even though you didn't have to steal his password to get in, you still had no right to use his account.

This might come back on you in a bad way. It probably won't... but it might.

Actually you sound like troll

This is beyond stupid

I'm sure his contact's overriding disgust will outweigh your intent to educate.

You better hope their isn't a surveillance camera in that location. Doesn't take much to match-up the origination of the email and time.

Awesome.

Don't leave your address book and diary open on the table if you are not sharing it with the world.

bro

not cool

Why not?

If someone wants to play mercenary for pay in an illegal war, what should they expect. Praise?

Free includes debt-free!

Assume much?

I have a kid in the military, he's not a mercenary, but a Ron Paul supporter. The OP should be ashamed of himself, and grateful that the soldier who's privacy he violated didn't walk in and catch him messing around with his email.

You are suggesting the soldier would violate his Oath?

?

Free includes debt-free!

You...

...are a numbnuts also.

As an aside, what oath does any soldier take to not kick some stupid f-u-c-k-e-r-s ass, while off-duty and on a personal matter, for sending slap-nuts stuff from his email account to his contact list, without his permission?

I will clue you in, Cedric....none.

You and your ass-clown forum buddy are bereft of integrity, by YOUR words and by HIS actions.

It really is as simple as that...just so you know.

If you don't know, I can't help you.

He left the laptop in a public place and invited exactly what he got.

It's just as simple as that for those who haven't been brainwashed.

'IF' The Story is Even True...

...then all he did was forget to close out/log off...and to let you in on some dirt-simple cognitive reasoning and critical thinking...that is not an invitation.

What is 'as simple as that', is that you and your fellow ethically-challenged wingnut, are as clueless of basic concepts and acts of right and wrong, as anyone I have ever contemplated.

As to being 'brainwashed', well, that is as completely baseless and non-substantive as the rest of your postings that I have seen.

Please expound on how you 'rationalize& justify' to yourself that those who disagree with you and your little girlfriend, are 'brainwashed'.......this should be better than cartoons.

Go for it, Cedric.

Stupid is as stupid does.

The military has been brainwashed for a century and more.

War is a Racket. USMC Major General Smedley Butler. The most decorated Marine in history tells the tale of his role as a hit man for Corporate Interests.

Nothing has changed.

Brainwashed?

So everyone here telling you and OP that this was a dick move has been brainwashed? Brainwashed by what; standards, respect for others, the golden rule?

You are right, it was not a crime. You are also right... when you leave your laptop open in a public place it invites assholes to do stupid stuff. However, OP did not have to be that asshole. I don't care what he sent to who, it doesn't matter at all... he had no business in another person's email account.

Moral of the story; don't fuck with other people's shit.

End of story.

So how do you explain...

I don't try to explain or justify them

I only try to explain or justify my own actions.

I think you would

have been better off writing down the guy's email address and logging him off. Send him an email from your email address and tell him you logged him off for his protection, told him your DP user name and asked him to drop by the DP sometime. Can't condone what you did.
