This is by far the cheapest, lightest, smallest and safest way to store energy on-board a car. By 'condensing' hydrogen into the hydride mixture inside, you can store 400 miles worth of range in 4 small scuba sized tanks.

When full, these tanks are not under any pressure. They simply hold the volume of hydride but they're still made from strong and lightweight carbon fiber. If you destroy the tank, nothing happens. If you destroy it with something burning, like an incendiary round, the spilled powder will just glow like tiny embers as the heat harmlessly boils hydrogen slowly away.

When you want hydrogen out to use in an engine or a fuel cell, you simply turn on a small heater coil and boil some hydrogen out of it. These guys boil it out at around 4 PSI just to get it to flow out the hoses to the engine.

By using hydrogen instead of compressed air, you get a burnable fuel instead of just a pressure out. This means much less weight, size and cost for the same energy. This is why they get 400+ mile range while an air car only gets 150 or so.

Putting the stuff into the tank is virtually the same process as with an air tank. Energy (usually electricity) must be provided to some process and the result loses some amount. Air compression loses roughly 50% but hydrogen losses can be down to 30% (electrolysis). This means that hydrogen can be done with 2/3rds of the solar of the air car. Both can be stored en mass in a garage tank so low power solar can provide the initial energy.

Thank you. Your air pressure car links are now embedded in this forum post. Folks will come to realize that filling air tanks can be done many ways with little cost or pollution. Not a perpetual motion machine; tis an efficient way to transport a body around without spreading noxious gas all along ones way. As pointed out, use of compressed air for propulsion works. Grueling hard rock mining used compressed air locomotives for decades. It can certainly transport folks around.

Compressed Air Tanks vs Batteries

The properties of the air tank can store pressure to be released for energy later are similar to blowing up a balloon, and then using the output to power something; it is like a battery.

So what would happen to the balloon after many uses? It would wear out and need replaced right?

So if we are comparing air tanks to batteries, we should compare them fairly with a cost/benefit analysis. What are the material costs/savings of switching to air tanks over batteries?

Exploding Air Tanks - Not a Problem

The Italian inventor shows off a carbon fiber air tank. Carbon fiber does not shatter, when it breaks, it TEARS, like a fabric. So it is left as a solid structure; only the pressure escapes, no need to worry about a tank exploding in an accident.

advantages?

The first thing that I would consider is the weight. The weight of any vehicle has a lot to do with its mileage. Batteries are very heavy compared to air tanks of the same size. How often does one hear of an air compressor exploding and injuring people? I had batteries pop right under my face (accidentally shorted battery while it was charging and producing hydrogen gas) My ex-wife had a battery explode, right in my car, at the mall, spontaneously!

First, it seems the compressed air would be safer. The trade off is what type and how much energy is required to pressurize the system. Air would be greener than other cars while operating. But, just like electric cars, there would be carbon production to supply the energy for the compressors. That is ignoring the carbon footprint that is developed while the vehicle is being manufactured. The only way to eliminate carbon footprint charging is to have a compressor capable of developing the stored energy needed to operate on a very low power battery system, rechargeable through solar, as well as, other power sources.

Efficiency would be secondary, if air is the fuel! But, to be able to propel a vehicle, energy is going to have to be expended. It does not matter whether or not it is air powered. Just sayin'!

Advantages to Air Tanks?

Weight - Definitely is a factor, and air tanks would most likely be lighter than batteries at most capacities.

Chemicals - This factor likely goes to air tanks as well, air tanks wouldn't get their power from chemicals, but chemicals may be used the production of the tanks.

That depends

There's two kinds of 'benefits' to measure on these systems. First is energy efficiency and second is economic cost.

The air car is not any more energy efficient as other methods because the intermediary steps lose too much power along the way.

The baseline of today's cars is that 3% of the energy of the oil moves the car. This accounts for drilling, transporting, refining, transporting, distributing, mixing, burning in the engine, transmission losses and imbalance losses like idling. This is why there's lots of incentive to fix it.

The air car also comes in around 3%, which is the same as gasoline IC engines - not good enough to put big investments into. The reason for the low number is that when you compress air, half of your energy turns to heat which is lost unless you can store it. (not feasible) So from coal to electricity, the efficiency is 11% overall, then 95% motors run 75% compressors, then losing 50% to heat, then 95% again for the air motor in the car and then 75-85% in the car's transmission.

Economically, you only pay 15 cents per kWh of electricity and can compress enough air for a mile in that kWh so it's 15 cents/mile. Gasoline at $3.50/gallon and 20 mpg comes to 17.5 cents/mile.

Battery powered electric cars charged by solar PV, are over 90% energy efficient from a clean, free energy supply. However, their cost is all in the up-front purchase price. Stretching it out over 4 years, a car driven 200,000 miles would probably cost 11 cents/mile. Solar thermal electric could drop that by another half.

If they would cover...

If they would cover the body with nano solar panels ( flexible sheet solar panels) it would be able to recharge a battery to run the compressor. It would be recharging during the day whether the car is being driven or not. Granted the panels may not provide all of the power to keep the tanks full but it would lower electric bills and shorten charging times. A solar panel and battery set up at home could provide power to charge it off the grid also.

moreover, it took energy to cool that air and its almost certainly terribly inefficient. The best way to use compression as storage is only useful in industrial applications:

There, the problem as usual is that, as you compress air in the 'normal' way, it becomes hotter while you are doing the compression. The goal isn't to make it hotter, as it will just cool down later. The goal is to get as much volume inside the tank as possible at the same temp as it will be used at.

So the industrial compressors pump the air into underground tanks where there is molten salts surrounding the tanks, so the process can remain in what they call an "isothermal" system. Any excess heat generated by compression is taken away by the heat reservoir. (Its not a problem that its already hot down there. Its advantageous because the pump isnt working against itself.)

Add to this that it is necessary to 'use it or lose it'

as any pressurized container will lose pressure over time - there's virtually no such thing as an airtight container, and the more pressure the quicker it will escape.

Similar to the problems with storing and transporting hydrogen - as the smallest molecule it escapes containment quickly and easily.

I'll confess I'm pissed off right now. Just got done arguing IRL with someone who saw this on TV and wouldn't even think about the fact that it takes energy of some form to run the pump that compresses the air in the first place. This 'free lunch' thinking is what will ultimately bring about the absolute and total destruction of this country and frankly I'm just a little bit bummed about that.

A tangential answer to your question related to return is answered better in the second link added, which has an auto prototype with a range of 200 KM on tanks filed with compressed air at home for $2 of electricity. Top speed = 110 KPH. Range on without refill = 200 KM.

Hybrid planned using petrol miserly to cross United States or Australia with 1 tank of petrol to assist efficiency.

Interesting tech, but not infinite energy

Not sure whether it would be more or less efficient than a battery powered electric vehicle, though I'm guessing less, but you still have to use energy to super cool the air. It's going to have major problems controlling the temperature gain, especially in hot environments, and I'd have some safety concerns with fueling the thing. Have you ever seen what liquid nitrogen does to a tennis ball? I really don't think it is going to be a government conspiracy that prevents this tech from catching on, I think that battery powered vehicles, and possibly hydrogen fuel cells will have a better shot. It certainly is innovative, but I'm not sure it will be practical.
