Why Did God Rest on the 7th Day?

He's god for christ's sake!

I mean seriously, what kind of "god" get's tired?

Why create a planet with a 7 day week that needs "leap years" to correct itself?

Wow, do you really think it

Wow, do you really think it was God who came up with the 7 day week, or even the calendar for that matter? That's just scary. Early Egypt used a ten day week, but had changed by 500 BC. The early Romans actually had an eight day marketing week (i.e. market days were eight days apart), until Caesar Augustus (Julius Caesar's nephew, and the great builder of the imperial Roman Empire) reset it to seven days in practice, following the then-common practice of seven days in Egypt and justifying it with the seven local astronomical bodies.
There are seven periods of creation recorded in the beginning of Genesis. Although each of these has been translated as a “day”, the Hebrew word is “yom” which simply means a period of time with a beginning and an ending. It is unlikely to be a solar day since the sun, moon and stars do not appear until the fourth “day”.

God created everything in six days and taught us to stop and enjoy the fruit of our labors. The purpose of life is not to work constantly. God created an amazing, beautiful, awe-inspiring place and we need to enjoy it and cherish not just work.

As far as leap year goes: that simply a construct of man. God created day and night, man created the need to control time.

God looked upon his creation and said it is good,Then he rested. You will enter that rest if you are forgiven before you die.As for times and seasons there is a time for every purpuse under heaven.A time to live A time to die. A time to send his beloved son to come and teach the good news of salvation,Then to be crucified for your sin writing the new covenant in his blood.

I don't claim any religious title, and I know for a fact that I simply do not know what/why/who/when created me.

However I find it amusing that some Libertarians decide that in order to be "Libertarian" you must hate religion.

Live and Let Live please.

Also to note: No OP it isn't a legitimate question, otherwise you wouldn't have posed it here on the DP forums.

...rests in music? Is it because the musicians get tired and need to pause between notes, or is it to use silences to create the desired textures and patterns of the music?

A ceasing in activity (or resting) does not necessarily coincide with weariness. A lawyer 'rests' his case, not out of weariness, but because the presentation of the arguments is considered developed enough to stop.

Where does it say the Creator was anything like exhausted? It's just indicating a cessation of the creative activity of the prior period.

Beware the cult of "government"...

Didn't you get the memo?

God is a She.

Oh wait....
The Hebrew Bible and it's addendum The Christian Bible teaches Patriarchy.

A social system in which the male is the primary authority figure central to social organization and the central roles of political leadership, moral authority, and control of property, and where fathers hold authority over women and children. It implies the institutions of male rule and privilege, and entails female subordination.

How could The One And Only God ever be a She?

Does not compute!!! Bad grammar overload!

Preconceived Notions

There is often a loss of preciseness when translating between languages, and this loss can create new connotations or obscure the original connotations. The Hebrew word used in Genesis 2:2 does not always mean "rest" as we most often use it (i.e. being tired); it can be used a number of ways including "cease" and "eradicate." A much better translation to modern English would be "stop."

The kind of god that gets tired is one that is finite in his strength. I'm not sure what you mean; is that question supposed to imply that a god who gets tired is not a god or what? Why would a creator have to be infinitely energetic to be a legitimate creator?

Leap years are only needed to "correct" the planet if you assume that days, weeks, months (i.e. moon cycles), and years must be evenly divisible. What is wrong with the rotation of the earth being totally unrelated to it's orbit around the sun?

About Leap Year

I didn't catch that the first time I read your post and I started wondering...so I started searching. Here is a site that looks pretty interesting:

I have to say though, I am a little to weary at the moment to digest all the text.

Probably because

he got all messed up the night before. You know your going to chill and throw back a few after creating the whole universe.

The bold effort the present bank had made to control the government ... are but premonitions of the fate that await the American people should they be deluded into a perpetuation of this institution or the establishment of another like it-Andrew Jackson

take your crap elsewhere..

take your crap elsewhere.. why post this stuff? just to stir up stuff?

To have a discussion silly! Do only you christians get to post?

you christians promote your beliefs ALL DAY LONG.

there is nothing wrong with me promoting a discussion!

at least I don't go around judging, calling names, and telling people they will go to hell if they don't believe me.

That is "Crap" my friend.

An Honest Question...?

If you had read the Bible for yourself, (i.e. doing an exhaustive investigation for yourself), rather than taking other people's word for it, you'd already know that God used a lunar calendar & the Jews used their Jewish Calendar.

God gave you a freakin book with the answers; if you choose to be intellectually lazy, and not thoroughly investigate the Book for yourself, don't pester Christians with questions and criticisms. Personally I find it way more detailed, exciting and interesting than the Lord of the Rings.
No one is shoving anything down you throat by exercising our Constitutional RIGHT to religious freedom. You don't have to read it or listen to it. If it stirs up some demon in you to the point where you can't stand it, then I'd seek out an exorcist if I were you.
What other people believe, and why, is NONE of your concern.
Do you pride yourself as just another intolerant, narrow-minded bigot? Because, that is pretty much what you're accomplishing. Our Constitution Protects our freedom OF religion, so DEAL, BOTTOM LINE.

Galatians 5:1
It is for FREEDOM that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

But just for the record...

I don't mind the questions at all! "Pester" me whenever you like.

Just Like A Rest In Music

Music would be boring without rest notes. God rests or pauses not because he is tired but because He is an Artist. Does A painter continue painting endlessly? Long before a painter gets tired, he often considers if it is time to let the created painting be finished and to move on to something else. God has his own Will and divine rhythm.

I think it's a valid question

My response would be, who says you can only rest when you're tired?

To your second question, I would say that just because we have to have leap days (and even leap seconds) now, it doesn't mean we always did. I don't have a link, but am reasonably confident scientists have shown the earth's rotation is slowing. So whatever that rate is times however many times you need to get it to "full speed." Now that I think of it, I wonder how that would compute to a starting point. How many thousands/millions/billions of years ago would a year be exactly 365 days.

Just some healthy conjecture :)

1 day cycle 4 billion years ago would be about 6 hours IIRC

so 1,460 "days" would be in a full year back then. 365 "days" would be basically exactly 3 months.

the time amount in a year wont change over trillions of year unless we move toward or away from the sun since orbital velocity stays the same.

what the heck would you do?

God wasn't tired, He was looking at His creation. He "rested" by not creating anything else, that's all it means. You're reading way too much into that, in my humble opinion.

Leap year has nothing to do with the months.

If we had no months at all, we'd still need a leap day every 4 years and 4000 years. (yes, we'll need a February 30th at some point)

How long the week is has nothing to do with it either.

The reason for adjusting the calendar is because a day is not exactly 24 hours, and a year is not exactly 365 days. (which is 52 weeks and 1 day, so even that never works out)

A year is closer to 365.25 days, so every four years we have to adjust our calendar so that the solstices and equinoxes end up near the same calendar day each year. We don't have to do this in the middle of the calendar, like we presently do for February. We could add a special day at the end or beginning. February was chosen because after many other adjustments, it was the shortest month and it was thought to make more sense to add days to it instead of the others. (most of the other months vary precisely from previous erroneous attempts to keep the calendar lined up to the Earth and Sun positions throughout the year)

Likely we could come up with a better calendar from scratch but it would be tough for people to adopt it and get used to it.

We could also forgo the adjustment entirely. The Mayans took this route. Instead of trying to make all of the cycles fit perfectly, they simply kept track of independent cycles on their own system and so it took a long time for all of the cycles to line up again, to the tune of thousands of years, not every year.

He had to fall asleep someday after being high on mescaline for so long.

seriously... He must have been so incredibly high, that somebody wrote a book about what he said that we still read 2000 years later.

Is my salvation by the grace of God or by my perfect understanding of the words of the bible? God is my judge, so if I am wrong and He decides I am not worthy then praise be our Father. I will not worship words in a book.

It's an honest question.

It's an honest question.

What God did was set an

What God did was set an example. As he said, you get all your work done in 6 days and rest the 7th. I love the way some marble brained sized people try to put God in their box.

yup - that's it - right there.

God doesn't need rest like us humans know 'rest' to be. it was a cessation from work. The 7th day is when we are to rest from our work - or to cease from it and on the 7th day we give that day to God in worship.

Come on

How can you be honest and mix beliefs with rational thinking? They do not mix: if one knows something, it becomes knowledge, not belief.

God and logic mutually exclusive? It all works out logically, it just doesn't start with logic. Is it possible to know something outside of one's own experiences? Thought, being the movement of accumulated knowledge, has not the capacity to go beyond itself. Thought is the effect of 'what was'. Only unbiased observation has the capacity to touch 'what is'. Describe 'what is' through identification and you have introduced 'what was' which is the known. The known is the result of past experience. What is the nature of the mind that is absent of thought? Thought being the movement of the word, the word being the symbol of the fact. The symbol is not the thing, the description is not the described.

I've got another question:

Is there a 'Thinker' that is thinking thoughts? Or is there only thinking? What comes first, the Thinker or the thought? What is the Thinker without thought?

Belief and Faith aren't synonyms.

just sayin.
