The number of dead pigs found in a river that provides drinking water to Shanghai, China, has risen to 8,354, after local authorities retrieved a further 809 carcasses on Friday.

The Shanghai municipal government has repeatedly assured the city's 23 million residents that tap water remains safe. However, locals remain worried about water contamination from the swollen and rotting carcasses in the Huangpu river.

Is new bird flu outbreak linked to 20,000 dead pigs? Three die in China as scientists isolate new strain of killer virus

PUBLISHED: 3 April 2013 | UPDATED: 4 April 2013

A leading science writer has speculated that the unexplained deaths of thousands of pigs, ducks and swans in China is linked with the recent human bird flu fatalities and heralds the start of a pandemic.

Residents in Shanghai began to spot dead pigs floating down Huangpu River on March 10. Days later dead ducks were found in the Nanhe river in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan.

By the end of the month, the carcasses of at least 20,000 pigs as well as tens of thousands of ducks and swans had been washed up on riverbanks across China.

There are even more pigs than there are words for.

Cyprus now on that list, and nearly 2,000 floating Chinese pigs;very sad days ahead.

Notorious P.I.G.

Looks like an epidemic of swine flow.

I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: "O Lord make my enemies ridiculous." And God granted it.

....spit out my coffee laughing so hard when I read this....!!!

"According to state news

"According to state news agency Xinhua, the pigs have been traced to Jiaxing city in China’s eastern province of Zhejiang, where authorities have admitted to dumping the cadavers. The outpouring of dead pigs comes on the heels of a recent crackdown in the illegal trade of contaminated pork, according to the AP. China outlaws the sale of pigs that have died from particular diseases, but it was discovered farmers were offloading contaminated pork to slaughterhouses and subsequently ending up in markets.

"When I was a child, people swam or washed vegetables in the river,” Jin told TIME. “But those factories use chemical raw materials to make shoes and dump their industrial waste directly into the river.” The dirty rivers underscore a larger environmental concern with China’s rapid urbanization in the past few decades. Earlier this year the nation came under siege for its poor air quality, as images of the capital of Beijing, hardly visible through thick, lingering smog, circulated around the Internet."

When pigs float

The inspectors probably found a few that were diseased pigs and culled a farmer's entire heard. They did the same thing with mad cow disease and with sheep too in the UK a decade or so ago.

Apparently there isn't much space upstream to bury that many dead pigs, so I'm hoping the farmers that were impacted by the inspectors decrees sent them floating downstream to where the inspectors came from.

Anyone who knows the Chinese Communist Party is unsurprised

Anyone who knows the Chinese Communist Party is unsurprised by 6,000 dead pigs in the water.

CLEARLY its the result of an order from a bureaucrat in charge of swine in lower Anhwei province.

He saw the latest quotas issued by the central committee in the current five year plan and determined there was a case of overproduction.

Since being off-plan carries a penalty, he did the typically Chinese communist thing: lie about the figures and dump the bodies.

Central planning in any economy is fraught with weird and wacky unpredictable consequences. Chinese central planning is augmented with lies, deceit, and thoughtless reaction to boot.

Totalarianism at its finest. To hell with the world.

Bay of Pigs 2.0

I think

Chinese government has more important things to worry about than its people. I wonder if the meat go into making suasages.

DP will put anything on the front page these days.

SteveMT's picture

How many times have you seen 6,000 pigs floating belly up?

and in water used for drinking? What caused the mass kill and who is next. Pigs are a lot like humans. If they are dying in droves, are we next? You'll will not see this story on the MSM. They will only report it when people are dropping like flies, and there is no way to keep it covered up any longer.

A University of Illinois side-by-side comparison of the human and pig genomes has revealed remarkable similarities.

Give me a break. I try to bring good stories here.

although not directly related to the us

I think that many people use the daily paul as their only source of news. On that note.

I find it very disturbing. Though this is not a direct threat to us it is indirectly. Smog has been travelling over the pacific and seen on the west coast depending on where the jet stream is. It may only be indirect now but how long will it be until It's direct? Since the Chinese are so ignorant that this will go on for a long time until they finally find some excuse and another reason for any solution they will find.

Debbie's picture

Yes, I think you're right, and to Steve's question, what is

causing it and what does it mean for other pigs in circulation?

SteveMT's picture

Thank you, Debbie.

Maybe nothing else happens or maybe these pigs are the canary in the coal mine. Who knows, but something bad happened with this mass kill and mass dump.

Debbie's picture

For sure.

It's not from "the cold". Don't buy or eat ANY food from China, or food that has ingredients from China.

Hey Deb

Great advice, only problem is, even at the Whole Foods they don't tell you if it's made in China or not, only where it was packed or processed. On a side note, almost all aspirin is made in China, along with untold numbers of other over the counter medicines, and again, the labels only state where they are packaged or processed, not where they originated. : )

Where are the pigs coming from?

Doesn't seem to be a question anyone is asking...

(and don't you dare say "upstream")

SteveMT's picture

Yup. That is what they say, upstream.

"The surge in the dumping of dead pigs — believed to be from pig farms in the upstream Jiaxing area in the neighboring Zhejiang province — has followed police campaigns to curb the illicit trade of pork products harvested from diseased pigs."

This stuff can't be made up any better.
