Take Ride with Me? Setting Up an Aquaponics System - fishy's AP Protege - Update 5/20/13

I am finally setting up my AP system inspired by fishy and posting progress on the meet up and it dawned on me maybe some of our friends on the DP might want to come along for the ride?

I say fishy's protege (Unless fishy disowns me... LOL) because I have been a member of the AP meetup she and her husband started since the beginning and been threatening to set up my system the whole time and just now getting around to it and she is probably mumbling under her breath its about #$^@# dam time.. LOL

Anyway come along with me if you will for a ride in getting an Aquaponics system set up. Comments critiques questions etc. welcome Follow along here or on our meetup board if you like.

Time to get this show on the road wouldn't you agree? ;)

Ok then lets get things moving so thought I would Post a couple of pics on the chaos that will hopefully soon become my working AP system.

These are the grow beds I am deciding how to lay out. I am going to build a greenhouse room on the patio eventually so decided to see if I could make the AP system fit on the patio rather then on the other side of the house. I think it will work but I'll have to build a custom tank for the fish. I have a good water bed liner that may work for that but we'll see...

Working on getting the pics to show in the thread if someone knows how please tell me... To bad I don't have a video camera... ;)

Here's the Story on the Cardboard

Well so the water bed liner will not work its to small so I need to figure out how to build a custom tank for cheap. The conventional method is to build one out of wood and user a pond liner. But pond liners are dam expensive. Thought about using a couple of barrels connected with large pipe but I want a little bigger tank for the fish. So in my travels I ran across this guy on youtub who builds pools out of cardoard.. Yep that's right I said cardboard LOL! So its got my gears turning here check it out:

It's actually not a bad idea and most of all cheap. I don't think I will use cardboard this time around because I don't know how long it will last but it could lend it self to some cool shapes. However some thin plywood or ceder fence pickets instead would be better I am thinking. His water proofing method is pretty clever I thought. What I may do is build the tank of wood and water proof it like he does and try a small test tank out of cardboard just to see how long it will last... hey if it works we could call it Cardboard Aquaponics LOL!

Well I am off to check out some hard rock covering and price it etc...

Call me before you buy!

We are building a custom tank, and are biting the bullet for the pond liner. We want this system to last for decades, so we are going with more expensive materials when we have to. It comes in rolls, before you buy something else give us a minute to calculate how much we will need, and how much might be left of the end of the roll.
We also will need gravel soon, if you find a good source, please let us know. With transport, it may not work for us, but I'd still like to know what you find. We need to talk about a mining claim for mining our own gravel, granite is supposed to work fine in AP. I also have really good clay on site, we are going to try to build a kiln attachment to the RMH and try our own clay balls eventually.

Test Bed

I'm going to do a test bed this year replacing the traditional hydroton clay balls and gravel as media with spun fiberglass filter media. I think I'm going to stack a few mats separated with a pvc mesh for heavier plants to have solid root support. Here's a link to the filter media I think I'm going to use. Tell me what you guys think.

I think I can hardly wait to hear how it works out.

My one word of caution, I have had trouble starting seedlings using that rock wool, it does not allow enough oxygen to the crown area of the plants so I have to pick it off, or the plants rot off at the base. I would worry that fiberglass might be the same, but that looks like a good loose weave.
I'm expecting pics!

Damp Off

I have had the same problem with the rock wool and what they call "damp off" this filter media I'm going to try is a lot more airy than rock wool so I don't think that will be a problem. I have some test seeds I just planted the other day not in a grow bed but just in cups, I'll post some pics when they sprout.

I will give you a call. I

I will give you a call.

I have a tank I have been building for rain water that is not finished. That is probably going to be the fish tank with a little modification it looks like. It is made of 2x3's and plywood and fiberglass lined. It will hold about 800 gallons but for fish I will probably on put 5 or 6 hundred in it at most. I have about $300 into it and it should last for decades. I used to make surfboards in another life so had this idea of building a tank and glassing the inside like a surfboard or in this case more like a boat using matt fiberglass and that is what I have done. I used food grade resin they use for lining big water tanks and it is not cheap. I am pretty broke and looking for work so I am really trying hard to not spend any money and use what I have much of it accumulated a couple years ago. I have video clips of making it but need to put them together for a full video.

The tank will sit in a planter so not the outside needs to be water proofed. I am thinking of using that hard rock coating for the outside. but its about $24 a galling. Its called Restore for decks fences etc. It is thick acrylic that dries and looks likes stone (has some kind of fine aggregate in it) and preserves wood so thought it would be good for a wood tank sitting ina planter but I will put gravel under it too.

As for gravel I can get a pickup load for $15 dollars at the local cement plant near me Idaho Concrete/Sand and Gravel. I believe I tested it a couple years ago using the vinegar test and it was ok but need to do it again to be sure. I can get you a pickup load but you'd have to pay my gas on my guzzler... You can check if there is a cement plant near you and most of them will sell you sand and gravel real cheap much cheaper then the box and farm stores.

Don't mess with cardboard

Get your hands on a couple of these.. IBC Liquid Totes
You can usually find them on Craigslist
They are food safe, have built in plumbing and are built to last

A comment on my channel says "go round."

Makes the swirl filtration work better. The guy has been very helpful, we are taking his advice. You are right about starter systems, the IBC totes are what we used before and they are very convenient.

Weird...

...I was just watching some stuff about aquaponics and then I see this post... did you channel it to me?

Something is channeling it...

Something is channeling it I have been researching and preaching it for years and been in an AP meetup since 2011 and been gonna do it all that time but time money being out of work etc. have all got in the way. Now all of a sudden even though circumstance haven't really changed I am on fire to do it not just for me but so I can teach people. So maybe the same channel is broadcasting world wide LOL.

It just might be the ultimate urban gardening there is along with Hugelkultur. Veggies and protein (fish) using a tenth the water and food grows twice as fast using half or less the space then conventional etc. With all the ship going on right now people need this knowledge.

Seriously I am having visions of walking my neighborhood knocking doors to invite people to seminars in my back yard etc... So either I am just crazy, manic, or its time to shift gears as something is coming down soon... ;)

Yeah, we need to talk.

My landlord is ready to jump out of her skin. You know the offer they made us? They REALLY want us to get that going. Maybe they are mixing a "special chemtrail cocktail" for Idaho - lol! But people are HUNGRY for what you are feeling called to serve....

Sometimes I'd say it's best to not try to reinvent the wheel...

This is not one of them! I hope to be building your cardboard AP system someday, good luck! Keep us posted!

Freedom Lovers Unite : to bring in our last chance for what was a great country back again into the hands of the people.

Yeah I agree the cardboard

Yeah I agree the cardboard system is deemed experimental for now LOL but it is intriguing to say the least. I guess I better post that story here now...

I think I have my tank situation figured out it was going to go under the grow beds but there is just not enough room there for it to be able to access it when needed so its going have go on the other side of the patio in a current planter; more work but it will be better there anyway. I'll post more on that later...

I would hardly say "protege" - something closer to "partner in crime." VERY cool to see you getting started!
