Sugar Bailout! Government Policy at its worst

Yahoo! front page news. The title on their website is a little misleading, but, the video linked is actually pretty good.

Reminds me of what the good doctor has been telling us for years about how wasteful this policy is. Good to hear someone on the MSM is picking it up.

the people in the video having the discussion

don't discern between corn syrup and sugar in reference to obesity.

Also the topic doesn't go into which sugar?
Beet sugar or Cane sugar?

Beet sugar is GMO as of last year. http://grist.org/industrial-agriculture/gmo-sugar-beets-get-...

Sugar cane has a complex genetic make-up that makes genetic modification difficult.

As for GM sugar cane, Monsanto expects to have a Roundup Ready/Bt variety on the market by 2015, and there are other big biotech companies with sugar cane in their sights.

Two other GM sugar cane programmes of note are: CTC Brazil’s work with GM sugar cane varieties with high sucrose content; and a joint venture between the Max Planck Institute in Germany, the Vasantdada Sugar Institute in Maharashtra, India and an association of sugar cane growers in Chacra, Argentina experimenting with varieties modified through chloroplast transformation.

Most of the world’s sugar supply comes from sugar cane. It accounts for over 70 per cent of global sugar production and is planted on around 15 million hectares (ha) in more than 100 countries of the tropics and sub-tropics. The second most import source of sugar is sugar beet, which is grown mainly in the northern hemisphere on 10 million ha in at least 50 countries. But the map of the global production of these crops is in flux, with much of their cultivation shifting and expanding on to new land.

"Sugar Trust" ~ Harper's Weekly editorial cartoon, Sep. 8, 1894

"I came not to harvest Cleveland. I came to harness him." - Sugar Trustee, 1884

Tribute: Sugar Trust Wagon

"Sugar Truest" reigns supreme. President Cleveland conquered, 1884.

This cartoon depicts the passage of the Wilson-Gorman Tariff in August 1894 as a stunning victory for Senator Gorman, and a degrading defeat for President Cleveland. Gorman is a conquering Roman Caesar who ruthlessly drives the Democratic high-tariff chariot of the "Sugar Trust" over Wilson and his low-tariff bill. Cleveland appears as a vanquished warrior, captured and enslaved in the tariff war, whose enchained figure is forced to bow and follow Gorman's lead.

Sugar Bailout Is Govt. Policy at Its Worst: End the sugar Trust!

Why Congress Should Repeal Sugar Subsidy - Cato Institute, 2007.
http://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/why-congress-sho...

[US] Commerce Department in 2006 found that for each sugar industry job saved by the sugar program, nearly three food manufacturing jobs are lost. The study found that (pay to subsidize 1 job; lose 3):

  • Employment in food companies that use substantial amounts of sugar is declining. Imports of food products that contain sugar are growing because it is not competitive to make those products in the U.S.
  • Numerous companies have relocated to Canada and Mexico, where sugar prices are much lower.
  • Chicago, once the nation’s candy manufacturing capital, has lost thousands of jobs. In 2004, candy maker Fannie May closed its Chicago factory and Brach’s moved its Chicago candy production to Mexico.
  • Michigan took a hit in 2002, when Kraft moved its 600–worker LifeSavers factory to Canada in search of low–cost sugar.
  • Hershey Foods closed plants in Pennsylvania, Colorado and California and relocated them to Canada as well.

Turns out according to consumer waistlines reports, evidence weighs in heavily. Coincidentally, the US lost boat loads of jobs.
