$.78 earned on 1 year CD...

What a joke! Completely usurious institutions paying fools dividends and people tell me each day, "well it's better than nothing"...no, it's worse than nothing, it's actually negative earnings when inflation is factored in...

Any suggestions on how to convince my wife to cash it out and purchase silver with it for my son?

Peace and Love always.

Since Bernanke's idea of a good economy is a good stock market

Since Bernanke's idea of a good economy is a good stock market, we're NOT SUPPOSED to earn jack on savings! Hell, there's no such thing as savings in a monetarist economy.

My grandma taught me to put my savings away and watch it grow over time. But that was in the good ol days of 5% interest rates on basic savings.

Grandma was full of it, according to the Fed.

Bernanke expects us to buy stocks! Buy buy buy! Money sitting in saving deserves to be eaten by inflation, according to the monetarists. Only moving money moves the economy by their calculations.

By my calculations, however, every time my money moves, it gets less and less due to fees, fines, penalties, and tax.

Roll the dice

Invest your cash in whiskey. It never goes bad and improves with age. Plus, you can drink it if all else fails.
Or ammo, if you can find any. It's doubled or tripled in price since December.
I was going to say invest it in women, but you're wife might get kinda sour unless she's the beneficiary.
If you're lucky, a casino might pay higher dividends than a CD.

My ten year old son learned

My ten year old son learned this lesson four years ago when he opened a one year locked in cd with $500 he had from birthdays and christmas and after a year he didn't even get a dollar. After that lesson I got him into silver at $15 an ounce and he has been buying since and has averaged about a 75% interest rate.
We now ask everyone if they have money to save, would you put money in the bank if the interest rate is minus 9 percent ?
That is the true current interest rate factoring in the real inflation numbers.

new hobby is a good start off...

by telling your wife you are intrigue about silver coins and their history and their beautiful art on modern coins is a good way to sneak into the silver stacking ;)

here a good site, under 10$ shipping and best silver coin & round prices...

Silver is a bad idea as well

Silver is a bad idea as well if its profit you're looking for. Silver is great as a hedge but not a profit maker. For that you might want to look at etf's and mutuals or bonds. Dont get me wrong, I own a bunch of silver, but its not going to make money. Cd' s are the worst.

Would anybody care to tell me

You used "silver" and "bad" in the same sentence

You used "silver" and "bad" in the same sentence. "We don' take kindly ta folks who do that."

Ha! My mistake.

Sound Logic

It looks like you've already got what you need to convince her... you're losing money by keeping it in cash. Now, you need to convince her that the alternative will not do so. Maybe explaining the perpetual money printing by The Bernank would be a good start on that path.

People need to start using their brains. As long as Americans keep doing what is "traditional" instead of what makes sense, we're going to continue on the road to serfdom... just educate her on the issue.

Its not because its kept in

Its not because its kept in cash, its because they used CD's to invest.

YOU are half of the marriage and entitled to HALF of the decision making.

Put HALF of your savings wherever the hell you want.

Hell, she's gonna divorce you and take it all anyways for being such a pussy so why do you even care?

Let me put you in order...

Marriage isn't 50/50 - this speak is indicative of non-married people...it is always 100/100.

Secondly, the money isn't my savings at all, it was given by my wife's grandfather and her name is on the account, not mine.

Third, I'm not delusional to think saving is still present-tense...I'm a financial consultant and the purpose isn't to save but secure.

Fourth, she will not divorce me over a $300 CD and I'm not a pussy for including her in financial decisions...and I care because it was monies given by family and it is not mine to claim without consent and discussion...

Don't reply so calously...it makes you appear uneducated.

Depending on how

large the CD is, tell her she can buy a pair of fancy new shoes, or what ever women buy if you can put the rest into silver =P
