Wild Food Suggestions ?

Do you have any suggestions, reviews, or resources? It would be nice to have list of the best of the best for people with a small budget.

I would highly suggest Sam Thayer's books on wild edible plants to those of us in America. http://foragersharvest.com/

Very nicely laid out...offers what to do with each edible (salad, tea, jelly, etc.).

How about some high calorie stuff?

Pinyon nuts, pine nuts, acorns, any kind of nuts in fall.

Cattails, arrowroot tubers, wild rice, berries, wild onion/chives in summer.

Don't forget anything that creeps, crawls or respires.

Be brave, be brave, the Myan pilot needs no aeroplane.

Still a while til acorn season

but maple seeds should be ready soon.

Dandelions.....

dandelions, spinach & pineapple.

Throw it in a blender, then blend some ice until slushy. No need to strain. Just drink. Sounds bad, tastes good.

PS
Pick the dandelions with the smooth leaves or it's yucky.

Amaranthus palmeri - Palmer Amaranth

Weapon?

Against Monsanto?
Spread these seeds amongst Roundup Ready crops. ;-)

"Palmer amaranth is considered a threat most specifically to the production of genetically modified cotton and soybean crops in the southern United States because in many places, the plant has developed resistance to glyphosate, a widely used broad-spectrum herbicide.[6][7]"

Some new ones in season

in West Virginia:

Sheep Sorrel
Wood Sorrel
Ostrich Fern
Violets

Also, today I made what I'm calling Pineapple Tea. That's pine needles steeped in apple juice. Pretty good.

You said best of the best

You said best of the best wild foods right? Elk, deer, turkey, Salmon, steelhead, and cuthroat trout ;)

Guerilla gardening, anyone?

As you gather this spring, keep an eye out for healthy patches of wild edibles. Watch for them to go to seed, and gather the seed. Come fall, go to parks, abandoned lots, etc, and toss the seed along creek beds or shores of ponds. You can increase the amount of food being produced on these properties without risking "invasive species" issues if you use native, wild edible seeds.

dandilions

After five years, the acre here is nearly dandilion free..

Gotta love dandelions

Today I fried dandelion flowers for the first time using this recipe:
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/fried-dandelions-appalachian-st...

They were very good, not a trace of bitterness.

Next, I think I'll try a sweeter version mentioned here: http://www.learningherbs.com/dandelion_recipes.html

Thank you for sharing that recipe

the thought never crossed my mind, frying dandilions.. I LOVE fried squash flowers, which I bread in a tempura like batter and pan fry in garlicy olive oil.. I'm going to try your recipe.. and maybe scotch broom would been good too, after all wine is made from both danilions and scotch broom.

Varies by zone

Around here, foraging season is just getting started. This spring and summer, I will be gathering (hopefully!):
Morel mushrooms (I ain't sayin' where!)
mullein
elderberry
blackberry
little red raspberry looking things whose name escapes me at the moment...
huckleberries (No, I will NOT tell you where on these, either!)
arnica montana
yarrow
lomatium
hawthorn
chokecherry
gooseberries
miner's lettuce
duckweed

I have to quit, I keep thinking of things. A lot of it, I just hit the woods and when I see it, I gather it. I've been doing this for 30 years now, I've reached the point where I've forgotten half what I know... until I am in the woods.

And, I have the blessing of access to old abandoned orchards, where I will gather wild apples, plums and pears.

I will also be studying my local "Bible:"
"Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Rockies"
http://www.amazon.com/Edible-Medicinal-Plants-Rockies-Kersha...

BONUS ROUND!
Make seedballs using seeds from native edibles, and start dropping them along creek banks and such, make future foragers' work easier!

Haha...

"Morel mushrooms (I ain't sayin' where!)"

Good call!

Me? Oh... I'm not going anywhere. I'm just taking this garbage bag for a walk in the woods.

NOTE: I am not advocating violence in any way. The content of the post is for intellectual, theoretical, and philosophical discussion. FEDS, please don't come to my house.

If we deny truth before your very eyes, then the rest of what we have to say,is of little consequence

Morels. Last year wife mowed most of them. Saved some.

About 10 feet from where I am sitting. Who'da thunk?

Also Chantrelle some years. Never knew, now waiting for it to come back.

I wish I could repay in kind, but no inspiration, today.
