What the mind can conceive, believe, and achieve

Here's another great quote from Hill, "Success is the knowledge to get whatever it is that you want out of life without violating the rights of others and by helping others acquire it."

Wikipedia - Napoleon Hill

Napoleon Hill (October 26, 1883 – November 8, 1970) was an American author in the area of the new thought movement who was one of the earliest producers of the modern genre of personal-success literature. He is widely considered to be one of the great writers on success. His most famous work, Think and Grow Rich (1937), is one of the best-selling books of all time (at the time of Hill's death in 1970, Think and Grow Rich had sold 20 million copies). Hill's works examined the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success. He became an adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 to 1936. "What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve" is one of Hill's hallmark expressions. How achievement actually occurs, and a formula for it that puts success in reach of the average person, were the focal points of Hill's books...

...Hill considered the turning point in his life to have occurred in the year 1908 with his assignment, as part of a series of articles about famous and successful men, to interview the industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. At the time, Carnegie was one of the most powerful men in the world. Hill discovered that Carnegie believed that the process of success could be outlined in a simple formula that anyone would be able to understand and achieve. Impressed with Hill, Carnegie asked him if he was up to the task of putting together this information, to interview or analyze over 500 successful men and women, many of them millionaires, in order to discover and publish this formula for success.

As part of his research, Hill claimed to have interviewed many of the most successful people of the time in the United States. In the acknowledgments section of his 1928 multi-volume work The Law of Success, Hill listed 45 of those studied by him during the previous twenty years, "the majority of these men at close range, in person", like the three to whom the book set was dedicated, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, and Edwin C. Barnes, an associate of Thomas Edison. Carnegie had given Hill a letter of introduction to Ford, who introduced Hill to Alexander Graham Bell, Elmer R. Gates, Thomas Edison, and Luther Burbank. According to the publishers, Ralston University Press (Meriden, Conn.), endorsements for the publishing of The Law of Success were sent by a number of them, including William H. Taft, Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Thomas Edison, Luther Burbank, E.M. Statler, Edward W. Bok, and John D. Rockefeller. The list in the acknowledgments also includes, among those of them personally interviewed by Hill, Rufus A. Ayers, John Burroughs, Harvey Samuel Firestone, Elbert H. Gary, James J. Hill, George Safford Parker, Theodore Roosevelt, Charles M. Schwab, Frank A. Vanderlip, John Wanamaker, F. W. Woolworth, Daniel Thew Wright, and William Wrigley, Jr. Hill was also an adviser to two presidents of the United States of America, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The video I linked to above is already having a direct impact on me, and I thank DPer hawkiye for bringing it to my attention in a comment on a previous post of mine titled, F.U.C.U. - Freedom United Credit Union, where I proposed a seemingly insurmountable challenge.

The video outlines 3 simple steps to begin your journey towards success. After procuring a neat, pocket-sized notebook, do this:

1. On page 1, write down a clear description of your major desire in life. It could be one circumstance, or a position, or thing, which you will be willing to accept as your idea of success. And remember before you begin writing that your only limitations are those which you set up in your own mind, or permit others to set up for you.

2. On page 2 of your notebook, write down a clear statement of precisely what you intend to give in return for that which you desire from life. And then start in, right where you stand now, to begin giving.

3. Memorize both of your statements, what you desire, and what you intend to give in return for it. And repeat them at least a dozen times daily. And always end your statements with this expression of gratitude for the blessings with which your were gifted at birth:

I ask not for divine providence or more riches, but more wisdom with which to accept and use wisely the riches I received at birth in the form of the power to control and direct my mind to what ever ends I desire.

After I finish watching all the videos below, I'll post my statements in the comments, and I'd love to read what you came up with if you're willing to share!

If you feel so compelled to continue watching this presentation from Napoleon Hill, as I did, here are the rest of the videos in that series. I highly recommend you view these videos, and act upon them so we can all achieve the goals we choose to accomplish in our own lives.

Note: For those quickly looking to label this blasphemy or "new age" or create a divisive message in this thread, please don't. Here's an alternative wording of Hill's expression of gratitude, which he actually favored: "Oh Divine Providence, I ask not for more riches, but more wisdom with which to make wiser use of the riches You gave me at birth consisting in the power to control and direct my own mind to what ever ends I desire."

There should be value for people of all religious persuasions in this thread. I hope you'll choose to discuss the valuable things you may find here, rather than focusing exclusively on that which you disagree. This is NOT a thread on religion.

I formally resigned today!!!

In the video titled Going The Extra Mile, Hill mentions that if we were in a job or position that prohibited us from going the extra mile, that we should change positions.

I made the first, and most difficult step three days after hearing that. I indicated my intent to resign from my Marketing Management position in corporate America.

In one of the videos, Hill also talks about writing your own writing your own paychecks...

I'm in the process of contracting a portion of the marketing responsibilities back to myself as an independent contractor, working remotely, under my own new company, Non-Network Marketing & Media!

I submitted the proposal today along with my two weeks notice of resignation!

I've never felt more free in my life!

Go for your dreams friend!

Go for your dreams friend! And remember any setback has the seeds of even greater success if you keep a positive mental attitude!

The mind is like a radio continuously broadcasting what ever your dominate thoughts are and the universe returns to you what ever your mind is broadcasting whether you realize it or not.

People think they are victims of circumstance beyond their control however they are mostly victims of not taking control of their own minds. This it not to say some circumstance are never beyond our control but the mind can always overcome and triumph with what ever it can conceive.

I am proud of you!

I'm sure to be looking back on this more in the future.

"Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice." -- Thomas Paine

Bump for awareness

thanks for sharing this will study.

I think the key to a successful life is to DO SOMETHING POSITIVE everyday. If you DO MANY POSITIVE THINGS everyday soon
you have more positive than negative in your life.

Most people like planning but never get to the DOING either because of fear of failure or laziness.

"We can see with our eyes, hear with our ears and feel with our touch, but we understand with our hearts."

I believe this is talked about...

...in the lesson titled Going the Extra Mile:

Though it's framed more like, do something positive from someone else and do it with a positive attitude and do it for seven days straight. Once you see how your life is changed, you will continue the practice.

I'm curious to hear from someone who....

...has put this into practice with actual realized results. I mean it just seems so simple and common sense.

And it's perfectly inline with what most of our parents and teachers taught us (30+ crowd), that is, "you can do anything you put your mind to."

It would reinforce why I work better off written lists, with clear cut goals.

Is it really this simple? Or rather, do you feel, "It's not that simple?"

Thanks For this Thread!

I would suggest moving it into the liberty forum and making it a DP original too this knowledge is all about true liberty! Don't worry about an critics!

Hopefully it will become the most popular and epic thread here! Imagine if all the intelligent folks here took full control and possession of their own minds as NH teaches? We can certainly change the world with that huge mastermind!

I read Napoleon Hills (NH) book "Think and Grow Rich" years ago but was not fully ready for all it taught. But some of it stuck with me. And I only recently began revisiting it this last year after stumbling across the videos so I dug the book out and re read it and one of his others that I have and it really hit home with me as to why I am where I am at this point in life and I have been applying his wisdom ever since.

Most of us have some experience with what he teaches on a small scale if we've ever made a plan to do something however small and followed through and completed the plan and felt the satisfaction of staying the course. All successful people follow his principles whether consciously or not. You can look and see it in anyone you know of who is successful. That's how I know the principles are sound and work.

Every single person on this planet is where they are in life because of the dominate thoughts of their minds. Your dominate thoughts have attracted all the circumstances into your life that you have acted on to put you exactly where you are. When I realized that it was almost devastating even though I thought I already knew it. I knew of it but never really took full responsibility of it. It hits home when you realize you are fully responsible for where you are in life and can't blame anyone else. Especially if your life has not turned out how you had hoped so far. The good news is it is never to late to start living the life you have always dreamed of.

Since I am into gardening I will liken the mind to a garden. If you do not cultivate the mind with what you want to produce just like a garden it will produce what ever the wind blows into it which is mostly weeds.

Unfortunately most of us have failed to cultivate the garden of our minds and they are full of weeds. What Napoleon Hill teaches is how to cultivate the mind with productive fruits and vegetables that will produce for a life time just like permaculture.

I have been doing what Napoleon says for several months now with a few periods of slacking off as old habits are hard to break and it is beginning to have a real effect on me. One of the things I did to speed things up was sleep learning.

The mind is like a computer. What's on the surface is only about 10% the majority of what goes on in the mind is under the surface or in the subconscious. Running the programs that have been put in there since we were kids and by our choices as adults through repetition of thought either positive or negative. For most it is mostly negative which as he says causes the majority to live in poverty or want and or misery or drudgery etc...

Sleep learning is an easy way to reprogram the subconscious. So I recorded my affirmations goals etc. and the prayer he gives and play it at night while I fall asleep and during sleep. It's taken a few weeks but it it really starting to have an effect on me and how I think and etc... I did have a period of several days where my old programming reasserted itself in an attempt not to be erased but I just kept persevering. I am no no longer stressed over some circumstances in my life right now that I have been for a while and feeling on top of the world and the ideas are starting to flow and I am training and taking action and formulating my plans for the future with enthusiasm etc.

If you paste this into the google search box it will bring up a free course of PDF files I read these and used to learn about sleep learning...

site:http://www.sleeplearning.com/ filetype:pdf

It's not easy overcoming a lifetime of habit that has kept you from getting where you want to be. I think sleep learning is a great way to apply NH's principles in an easier and faster way to take full control and possession of your own mind and cultivate the types of things you want to produce into your mind.

I can look back though and see some periods in my Life where I followed the principles without really knowing it and achieved some goals. The problem is I slacked off those principles and did not keep going caught up in negative thoughts and the blame game to some degree. But when I did it helped me to make a living in the computer business for over 25 years. I have been out of work now for several years in that field and blaming everything but myself for it. So now I have a new plan formulating to help feed people and make a living with Aquaponics and permaculture which is something I love doing.

The mind is the one thing we can fully control but most of us just leave it to the wind to sow what ever it will in our minds... That is also why we have the society we have today as the collective mindset is mostly negative full of fear and and want etc..

Short on time right now, but I really like to quote.

Skimming the OP, I see he was an adviser to Wilson. My brain went "WHATTTT?!!!" I will check into him, but I am curious if you have a any quick thoughts on the people he associated with. They were not really nice people.

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

He Was a Success Coach

He wasn't an adviser on policy etc. but on personal achievement. He had a series of schools for the Science of Personal Achievement. Today we would call it a success coach. Also back in the day people did not know what we now know about Wilson and others etc. He was seeing the world in context of his times when people still saw America as the beacon of freedom and hope we were all taught it was and had more confidence in their leaders and looked up to some of these people as successful people not knowing much about them.

I know my Grandfather thought Wilson was a pretty good President but was sure Johnson killed Kennedy! Maybe that's where my conspiracy roots are LOL. I think this knowledge could help us return it to that ideal.

We are still battling that mindset today. Even not so nice people can still use some of these principles to accomplish their goals. And this is the kind of knowledge elites would like to keep hidden and suppressed too as they all use it to keep ahead of the masses so to speak.

Which quote do you like?

I am re reading his last book he wrote before he died called "Grow Rich with Peace of Mind". I believe he was in his 80's when he finished it and it is really good and filled with wisdom after a life time of achievement himself. However he talks a lot about wealthy folks who have no peace of mind and are miserable and why as opposed to those who have material wealth and non-material wealth of the mind heart and soul.

I think...

I think perhaps their definitions of success were skewed or twisted, but if our definitions of success are different and positive, I think the principles talked about here still apply.

I think you're right about a lot of things...

The reason I like this topic is because it seems to bring together everything I'm doing, but serves to connect all the dots, affirm I'm on the right track, provides step-by-step real actions to help pursue my purpose, and it really helped determine what exactly that greater purpose is, though I'm still developing and fine tuning it.

I think I'd like to do what he's doing, help others realize their potential to promote personal responsibility through community and innovation and the principles of freedom. I talk about it here:

Goldwater Speechwriter, Karl Hess Explains Industrial Incubators & the Role of Community

I've always thought I wanted to help people, invent stuff, and start and sell businesses. I think my purpose is intertwined in those three endeavors which could potentially come together as an industrial incubator...perhaps it is here where our efforts can produce F.U.C.U. and other liberty businesses that will help replace the coercive institutions of government.

I started going back trying to see if the principles NH talked about had affected my life. I noticed how I used the power of the DP community to start Revolution Car Badges with merely $26. I had fostered an environment that allowed a random person to step forward and offer me financial assistance to get the business off the ground. Additionally, I sent one letter and a badge to Tom Woods, and he ended up writing a Facebook post on it. I sold out in less than a week.

Then I started thinking of every job I've ever had. I started in the entry position and in every job except one or two, I advanced to the highest position available....typically in management.

I've always felt I could bring the best out of people, and that I had a talent for seeing the positive things life...the hidden opportunities.

This weekend, I'm going to focus on determining on my life's purpose, so that I can write it down and then figure out a way to achieve it.

All my projects and ideas are secondary I think...merely a means to get to my end. I need a means to get to all my means...and all your means, so that together, we can all reach the end we so desire.
