LAPD Breaks Promise: No New Truck for Women Shot During Dorner Manhunt

Officers opened fire on the newspaper delivery women, piercing their pickup truck with more than 100 bullet holes.
By Hetty Chang | NBC Los Angeles | Mar 13, 2013

The two newspaper delivery women who were shot at during the manhunt for Christopher Dorner will not be getting a new replacement truck as promised by the LAPD, according to their attorney Glen Jonas.

It has been more than a month since LAPD Chief Charlie Beck promised the truck to Emma Hernandez, 71, and her daughter, Margie Carranza, who had been working in Torrance, Calif. before dawn on Feb. 7.

Police said it was a "case of mistaken identity" that prompted officers to open fire on the women. Beck later apologized and promised to replace their truck, now riddled with bullet holes.

According to Jonas, LAPD and Galpin Ford wanted his clients to pose for a photo opportunity and pay income tax on the truck. The women no longer want the truck after they were told they needed to fill out a 1099 form for the donation, Jonas said Monday.

"You tried to murder the woman, now you're telling her she can't have a four-wheel drive, you're telling her she can't sell it and you've got to be taxed on it?" Jonas said. "How would anyone react to that?"

How about have the uniformed criminals who were very much in violation of Calif deadly force laws, been arrested yet?

Garan's picture

If you look like..

If you look like a terrorist (or someone else being man-hunted), then... sorry.

~ What a contrast!

~ 71 Year Young Grandma has more courage and guts than boys in police costumes with body armor!
~ Listen to this... ""The grandmother, Emma, starts saying, ‘God have mercy on us,’ because she thinks for sure they're going to die," "She then clutches around the back seat of her daughter to protect her from the gun shots because her daughter has children." Attorney Jonas said.

~ And nobody was killed?
~ Sounds like these Po-Po's need to get trained in firearms.
~ No wonder Donner was picking cops off at will.
~ LAPD needs to be disarmed until they can learn how to handle guns.
~ If these women don't go for $100 million EACH they belong in Lost Angeles!
Woop Woop!

The disgusting part...

of this whole story is that nobody in the press is calling for attempted murder charges for these felenous officers. I am sure that the orders came from above that they are to shoot to kill now(LAPD couldn't even get that right), ask for identification later. As the Nuremburg trials ruled, following orders is not an excuse to break the law and violate human rights. These women had their civil rights violated and the feds should be taking up the case. I am so sick and tired of these thugs literally getting away with murder. It is no wonder that someone would want them all dead.

I guess I'm not alone

still worse..

I live in San Diego, most people I talk to don't even know about this story

It's worse than just not

It's worse than just not calling for charges, many of the media stories are written with sympathy for the cops or to have the reader feel sympathy for the cops. There's no touching stories of the victims here.

The feds aren't going to help because there's nothing here for the feds to gain. They want to have this power too.

Next time a homeowner is afraid on a wrong house raid of course he will be responsible for his actions thinking the cops were criminals. In every instance the government's mistake is the mundane's problem.

Exactly Right

It's another of the reasons to respect due process by the way. Even when they have good intentions, the people in power sometimes "get it wrong".

I'd like to see the police officers have to pay some of the money for the truck out of their personal money. Why should the tax payers be on the hook for the police's screw-up? And, yes, these officers should be facing criminal charges for attempted murder.

Does anyone know if these officers got in trouble at all?

I want to see

Them in prison with the rest of the criminals like them. We cannot allow the police to be treated any different than the citizens. Selective prosecution only benefits the elite and totalitarians.

I guess I'm not alone

I have to comment about the most alarming part of this article...

"Police said it was a "case of mistaken identity" that prompted officers to open fire on the women."

Since when is ANY identity grounds for an execution?

NOTE: I am not advocating violence in any way. The content of the post is for intellectual, theoretical, and philosophical discussion. FEDS, please don't come to my house.

SUE,SUE,SUE their asses till you get compensated properly!!!!!

I would sue for 100$ million

and make the LAPD go belly up.

The taxpayer would have to foot the bill

Another insane piece of the system. A police officer "gets it wrong", uses force and then reparations fall on the tax payer.

omg this is horrible

omg this is horrible

this whole this is so bizarre. I am so happy the ladies did not die in the attack, hope they can get this straightened out.

LAPD Concerned About "Screw Up"

...they left too many loose ends in this incident (the women lived to complain). Had they "finished the job" they could have made up any old story to justify what they did. Frankly I'm surprised victims or surviving family members of police shootings aren't charged for the cost of the ammo expended on them.

102 bullet holes - it's a miracle these women are still alive

Take it to court and pray to God the jury members have half a brain.

Make the officers pay.

The problem is that when it goes to court, the women will get a new truck, but it won't be the police men that will have to pay for the new truck, it will be the taxpayers that will be robbed to pay for their recklessness. Doesn't seem fair to me.
