'Paedophilia not criminal condition' says Durban cardinal

"The Catholic Archbishop of Durban, Wilfrid Fox Napier, has described paedophilia as a psychological "illness, not a criminal condition."

Where is my pet troll patrol who likes to tell me there is not an attempt being made to protect pedophiles?

Having a covetous nature isn't a crime.

Acting out your covetous nature is. Love is the fulfillment of the law, and I doubt anybody here could argue that a pedophilia is an act of love.

Having Muderous Thoughts

Having Murderous thoughts isn't a crime either but acting on those impulses is. Acting on your sexual impulses to sexually assault a child instead of seeking mental, psychological help is one of the most despicable things a human being can do and is a criminal condition if acted upon.

Thought Crime

Thought crime is it? Until a pedo commits a crime, he's just a sick monkey. Perhaps if it was viewed as a mental illness, and people gave treatment to figuring out how to cure it, there would be more pedos going and getting helped rather than repressing themselves and finally victimising a kid once they break.

Im not ready, as a libertarian to start punishing people for thoughts yet. It would be nice however to see the gigantic boy-ring known as the Catholic Church burned to the ground for a thousand years of child rape. Pedo actions are a crime.

It is the conditioning that alarms me.

I agree, we need to find a way to LOVE these people back to health, but pretending it is not a problem is not love.

classifying something as a

classifying something as a mental illness is a loooong way from saying its not problem. Much like I think people hooked on crack need medical help, not prison time, I think pedos need many years of therapy and perhaps voluntary chemical castration if thats what it takes to keep them from becoming criminals. With our current "kill on sight" view, I just don't see a lot of these people seeking help. As a result, you'll see a lot of abuse happening when they finally flip out.

There are two ways you can approach any problem. Like an idoit, and like a reasoning human.

Again, it is the desensitization process.

They re training the counselors to help "protect" these people from a society that hates them. And I DO agree we need to stop hating people, but it does NOT mean we tolerate the behavior. I have seen counselors protect the poor, misunderstood pedophile and leave the child he molested at risk. The efforts in the mental health community are to get this deemed just another sexual attraction, "minor attracted" is the favorite term, "hebophilia" is you like them a little older. I'm telling you, it is a slippery slope, and the mental health care professionals and people in power are pouring grease on it.

You're misunderstanding. The

You're misunderstanding. The moment he commits a crime... i.e. molests a child, he should be hung by his balls and dipped into a shark tank. Abusing children in this way will "never" be tolerated. Im sure its the wet dream of all these @#$%ing politicians who want to break down the rule of law so they can do whatever their sick minds want, however you will NEVER convince any parent to accept it. Ever. And there are a lot of parents.

Im a father of two daughters. I will show no mercy to any man who touches one of them. However, a system which encourages such people to seek help BEFORE they act on their desires is preferable to one which incentivises them to hide their sad nature until repression turns them into monsters. My children are "less" likley to be victimized if there is a place where these people can get help BEFORE they become criminals.

The second they go from "minor attracted" to "child rapist" they become dead meat in my opinion.

Well serisal killers are mentally ill too

but their actions are criminal.

What kind of logic is this?

The law cannot make a wicked person virtuous…God’s grace alone can accomplish such a thing.

He's right

Scummy, but right.

Only actions carry consequences. One can desire child-buggering every day throughout their adult life, but if they never act on such desires they remain forever a non-criminal.

It's analogous to that whats-his-name jerk politician who got chided over a "corporations are people" remark: technically correct.

He's half right.

It's both. It's a serious mental disorder and also a serious crime.

The priest from Durban

was speaking of men who have actually committed the act, as far as I can tell.

Oh, ick -- in that case

...private arbitration instead of State-fed revenge fantasies.

Love the sinner, hate the sin

Hate this sin is still an important part of the equation.
Sending pedophiles to a prison where they will be sexually abused more is the sign of how very sick this SOCIETY is.

Orwellian, at best...

satanic and diabolical, at least!

I guess rape and murder will be the next psychological problems that are not the fault of the perpetrator.

God forbid, though, if you smoke a joint!

I am beyond disbelief anymore.
