Did you know? Saddam challenged Bush to a debate in front of both countries citizens?

He said "Bush will explain why he wants to go to war, and I will explain why we are insistent on peace and we want to maintain peace."

Seemed very civil to me, and I had never seen it.

Maybe the tension between Iraq & Kuwait was about oil

but I would suggest one also consider the map of Kuwait. I would be referring to the coastline. All of the useable coastline with access to the gulf was carved out to Kuwait. Like the US Civil War I doubt it is any one specific cause, likely a number of causes. In the same way the Civil War was none of the Ottoman Empire's business regional strife resulting from the arbitrary piece mill of said empire is really none of our business.

logical

actually he sounds quite logical, and not like the monster he is made out to be.
of course the Govt does not debate and presents facts, its just invades whichever country it wants, kills by drones anyone it wants. no need for proof, trust the King !

Bush did not want to look even more the fool in a live debate.

Bush's "childrens do learn" would have been no match for Hussein. In addition, they wanted to spare the poor translator!

..

and so Bush had the man hung!

Why would a peace loving man

start a war with Iran and occupy Kuwait?

Clinton administration had charged Saddam with weapons of mass destruction and kept the embargo.

This action (to invade

This action (to invade another sovereign state without provocation) was what did it for me. Shattered the last remaining illusions I had that America was fundamentally a force for good in the world. I remember, being so fucking depressed that not only was this unilateral invasion allowed to happen, it wasn't even fucking questioned by any of the major news organizations. They all just cheered on, the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of poor civilians. I know Saddam was an evil tyrant that got what he deserved, it's a pity that Bush and Cheney (frankly anyone who voted for this) did not get what THEY deserved. In a just world, they would have joined Sadam at the end of a rope...

Yup... Just goes to show, if

Yup...

Just goes to show, if you kill one man, your a murder.

If you kill a million, your a hero (assuming off course that YOUR side wins)

Fuck, I'm sick of the inherent tribalism that seems to be at the core of human nature. Why do we allow our leaders to kills others just because they are different or because we want their stuff... When will we fucking evolve...

Where does Saddam get off....

Where does Saddam get off asking Dan Rather to moderate this debate? Saddam should have thought before he spoke. Dan Rather has more important things to deal with besides the well being of millions of people. For instance at this time he had been suspecting his maid of stealing change out of his change bowl. Rather's wife and him had been arguing about where to buy there next vacation home. It's amazing Rather was able to juggle these problems and do this interview let alone moderate a debate that would have been the biggest moment of his career. My thoughts are with Dan during these troubling times.

You forget one small

You forgot one small point

Iraq invaded Kuwait... How can he invade another and say he want's to live in peace.

True

But, he was also told he was in the right for doing so and given the blessing by the US. When he realized it was a setup, his forces retreated. Hence the highway of hell.

"In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot."--Mark Twain

It doesn't matter why he did

It doesn't matter why he did it.... It only matters that he did do it. If the police tell you it is okay to kill someone does that make it morally right to do so?

He claims to want peace and many here appear to make him out to be a nice guy in a attempt to rewrite history. He was a tyrant who ruled with a iron fist.

Don't get me wrong I don't defend the war and fully understand it was about trading oil for something other than the dollar. I doubt anyone here would have been happy living under his rule.

Where did Kuwait come from?

Has it been there for many, many centuries, or was it created for geopolitical purposes by a "western" imperial power? Which country once claimed the area as its own and might have been pi**ed off enough to attempt a reclamation? Which country gave that other country the "green light" to reclaim Kuwait?

Which wahhabists claimed that "babies are being thrown from incubators" in front of cameras? Where did wahhabism come from?

Important questions...

Your logic.... The Indians

Your logic.... The Indians can start killing the rest of us at any time and claim they want peace....

Invading a country that didn't attack them first

I mean how low could someone like Iraq go and they say there country is based on the holy scripture.

O that's right it was about OIL.. so that makes it OK Right.

What is fraud except creating “value” from nothing and passing it off as something?

maybe.

kuwait was cross-drilling and attempting to push their border into iraq.

alan glaspie specifically stated he had no interest in the border dispute. which most interpreted as a green light for military action.

couple that with the massive propaganda campaign and i suggest it was political maneuvering and manipulation.

Excerpts From Iraqi Document on Meeting with U.S. Envoy

Wasn't Kuwait slant drilling

Wasn't Kuwait slant drilling into Iraq's oil deposits and when asked to stop Kuwait said f' you because they knew they'd be protected by the other UN nations benefiting from Kuwait flooding the market with the ill gotten oil?

Didn't Saddam and his sons

Didn't Saddam and his sons rape at will the women of their country? Did they kill those who opposed them? If one tried to start a daily Paul in Saddam's Iraq what would have happened to them? I'm simply saying he was far from a saint.

More proof that this war was not about anything other than...

...money and bankers.

In late 2000, Saddam announced he would begin trading oil for Euros and gold - not American dollars - because Iraq was tired of 10 years of bombings and sanctions.

Immediately after Baghdad fell, Iraqi oil again once again traded in U.S. dollars.

Bush, Cheney, Rove, Congress, Hannity, O'Reilly, Medved, Levin, Beck, Limbaugh, Morris, Kristol, Rumsfeld, Bremer, Wolfiwitz, the Federal Reserve and any other supporter of attacking Iraq are WAR CRIMINALS, who will burn in hell forever (I hope), for killing tens of thousands of innocent people involved in the slaughter (both ours and theirs).

And cost us over ONE Trillion dollars.

Anyone who volunteered to join the military and attack the middle east also has some major soul-searching and questions to ask themselves.

But I give them some latitude because most people honestly didn't know how evil our government is (due to their ignorance).

I advised every family member of enlistment age NOT to join the military and after explaing to them why, not one of them did.

It may have saved their lives.

Hardly

Banksters are tools, not masterminds.

The NWO isn't seeking money, it is seeking world domination over all forms of life. The "money" part they figure will just flow from achieving the former.

Did you know that Sadaam tried to assasinate....

George Sr. in 1993? It was never disclosed who pulled the lever for Sadaam's hanging, but I have my suspicions.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/inatl/longterm/iraq/tim...

doubtful in my mind

"Clinton said he ordered the attack after receiving "compelling evidence" from U.S. intelligence officials that Bush had been the target of an assassination plot and that the plot was "directed and pursued by the Iraqi Intelligence Service."

a lot like that compelling evidence of WMD's "north, south, east and west of baghdad?"

"First, key suspects in the plot confessed to FBI agents in Kuwait."

remember the "free kuwait" movement? remember the Nayirah incident?" no way. kuwaiti intel can not be trusted.

sticks a whole lot of the alleged assassination plot by Iran that everyone's forgotten about. and if it was legit, i'd be looking westward. the idea of Saddam trying to pull something that thoughtless just doesn't make sense. especially when it was senior that gave him the entire nation.

don't trust msm. don't trust the 'intel'. don't trust the pres.

Refusing to debate in front of the world is proof enough to me

that W was lying. WHO would not JUMP at the chance to "show the world" what an evil liar Saddam was? So, instead of diplomacy or "debate", the US kills 1.5 million iraqis and then has the leader of that nation hanged on cell phone video.

I hope the economy crashes soon so we can rebuild America as a constitutional republic, with NO Central Bank, and real sound money!

Everyone currently in positions of power should be forced to leave this country and NEVER allowed back in. Or...killed. Either way is fine.

Did you know?

That calling oneself a citizen who is willing to stare at a telescreen while pretend "leaders" pretend to be debating about whether one gets to live or must die is a sign of a troubling mental deficiency?

W. Bush was so startlingly inarticulate...

....that Saddam could have probably won the debate with him, even if it were held in English......then they could switch sides and Saddam could have beaten him AGAIN advocating the opposite position. Lucky for W, he only had to debate ALGORE, a pompus doofus who talks down to people like they are three years old. This from a nation that produced Washington, Madison, and Jefferson when we had about ten million people. The selection system is broken folks.

I remember that too

Sad. 10 years ago now. How time flies.

I remember that.

I also remember being utterly floored, dismayed, and horrified that we invaded a soveriegn nation without cause.
