Virus vial missing from Galveston lab

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - Officials say a vial containing a virus that can cause hemorrhagic fever has gone missing from a research facility in Galveston, but say there's no reason to believe there's a threat to the public.

The University of Texas Medical Branch said Saturday that there was no breach in the security its Galveston National Laboratory and no indication of wrongdoing. Officials suspect the missing vial containing the Guanarito virus was destroyed during the lab's cleaning process but the investigation continues

Re missing vial: # of bio-hazard labs grew after 9/11

Houston Chronicle has a good article on the issue. http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/a...
Seems this incident is small potatoes compared to some others, like the "9,200 vials of pathogens and toxins lost by the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Md., in 2009."

A Rutgers microbiologist who has studied the issue is concerned. ""In the heat of the moment the federal government made a massive effort to increase preparedness," he said. "Multiple federal agencies set up parallel and redundant federal programs of investment in biodefense. The expansion led to lax oversight and has made the country less safe," Ebright said."

Someone needs to FIGURE OUT what happened to that Galveston vial of deadly virus, a virus carried by Venezuelan RATS. They said it's "not believed" it could be carried by U.S. rats. Sure would be nice to know for sure! Um, anyone heard of the rat-carrying virus that caused the BLACK DEATH that wiped out about half of Europe's population?

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.
