Government Should Get Out of the Marriage Business

There has been continued talk over same sex marriage that has sparked debate from both sides of the aisle. One side insists that marriage is an institution that must be protected by the government, while the other believes that same sex couples must be given the same rights as married couples. Yet by their actions, both sides agree on one thing: government must define marriage.

Both sides have put so much trust in government that they have forgotten the history of marriage licenses. It was not always the case that couples had to have marriage licenses. George and Martha Washington never had a marriage license, and most Americans didn’t need them until the mid-1800s.

Exactamundo!

I've commented at length in other folks' posts on this matter (or the issue of gay marriage, etc., where good, smart people are scrabbling at the government to allow them (those people) the "privilege" of being able to join up and be taxed like the rest of the debt surfs).

People have been too hard-wired into the belief that if you don't join the "Legal Marriage Club" you're not *really* married... which is asinine! (Granted, the smug social pressure can be overwhelming. And people will hate your freedom.)

Real marriage happens between two hearts, minds, and spirits. Period! All the rest is just a racket for the restaurant / venue / wedding dress / planner / etc. industry and most of all for our shitty, unworthy, bullshit government.

Enact a little estate planning and power of attorney for D.N.R. / deathbed stuff and SHAZAM! You're good to go. (Costs less than the accrued penalties for being legally married over time. Betcha a million dollars! Well, perhaps unless you offset the expense of those penalties by popping out a litter of tax credit kids--which kidless people like *me* then actually pay for... which SUCKS and is unjust.)

What would the Founders do?

Thank you.

Well said, this should be left to either the individual states, or the faith community.

You're welcome

Hear, O Israel: YHUH our God YHUH one. And thou shalt love YHUH thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

You may have missed the point.

A coalition of high priests (organized religion) and kings (state governments) used fear of being socially shunned to make a power grab, subduing the peasants and splitting the booty (revenue stream). Additional profiteers have joined the coalition: tailors, lace makers, bakers, photographers, flower arrangers, limo drivers, caterers, glassware manufacturers, etal.

To me, it looks like a typical arrangement of any power seekers.

Well Said

So true.
