Censorship in New Mexico Community CollegeSubmitted by MCShowers on Wed, 03/27/2013 - 14:12
Friends of Liberty,
I teach History at a Community College in Albuquerque New Mexico, where we have . . . HAD a student publication, the CNM Chrinicle. Yesterday they published a special edition on sexuality. Mind you that is 'sexuality' in general, and all things pertaining to it. The edition recieved a huge backlash from certain parties, and resulted in a confiscation of every edition (even pulling it from the hands of students reading it), then the shutting-down of said paper, and the reassigning of the students who ran it to other jobs around campus. This was done in a mattter of hours yesterday afternoon and today the paper's existence in the office they formerly were stationed in. We await an official statement, but the paper has investigated unjust firings of Faculty members recently so they were on a watchlist already.
There are many reasons why this is intolerable. 1.) This is a direct infringment upon the first ammendment as this is a PUBLIC institution above the K-12 levels where some censorship is allowed, and an insult to the maturity level of our students. 2.) They are inplying that the student's are not deserving of adult tretment and myst be subject to oversight for their own good. 3.) well . . . the list goes on.
I am fuming. As much as I love my job and Central New Mexico Community College, I want to see this getting national attention. I I am attaching an electronic copy of the issue and a link to a local news stories.
