Rand Paul Endorses Mitch McConnell in 2014 Senate Race, Won't Back Tea Party Challenge

Patrick Howley | March 27, 2013 | Daily Caller

The Daily Caller has learned that Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul is endorsing Sen. Mitch McConnell for re-election in 2014, ending speculation that Paul would back a tea party challenge to the Senate minority leader.

“Rand Paul has endorsed McConnell,” Jesse Benton, McConnell’s 2014 campaign manager, told The Daily Caller.

Benton, who has worked for both Rand Paul and his father, former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, is credited by insiders with brokering Paul’s support for McConnell.

Jesse Benton?

"Benton, who has worked for both Rand Paul and his father, former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, is credited by insiders with brokering Paul’s support for McConnell."

Are we fighting to get rid of the insider corruption so we can replace it with insider corruption?

I'm done with this crap. You have to play their game to win and if you play their game then you are one of them. It's the catch 22 that insures they will win every time.

Rand endorsed McConnell before Bevin entered the race. Rand is only keeping his word, we should respect that.

Yes! But the anti Rand

Yes! But the anti Rand faction tends to ignore these little facts.

Why am I grinding my teeth?

You know, he isn't required to endorse anyone. But endorsements play a huge role in elections. I just saw it happen in my own circle during the primaries. And that's how we got Cruz instead of Addison.

That is where

you come into play. Become involved in your area and educate others to vote based upon facts, records and associations, rather than relying on tv, radio personalities or endorsements. It is time to act as responsible adults who can/should make decisions on their own.

My sig has a link to the pdf that can be printed. Please share.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

I guess you are right.

It was such a letdown to see those close to me go against my recommendations to vote for someone on a post card with the words "Conservative" or "Tea Party." It's got me down. Why should I fret over candidates if my vote equals just as much as those who vote on a whim?

Please edit your post below where you mistakenly mentioned Lee Bright in the last paragraph.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

Last 2 paragraphs.

"Infighting between tea party figures has also weakened the chances for businessman and potential tea party challenger Matt Bevin to take on McConnell, according to some insiders.

“He’s had his name thrown around out here, but I’m not convinced” of Bevin’s viability, Adams said. “I think there are other potentially superior candidates.”"

Seems like the tea party there didn't want him.

This is such a waste. Lee Bright is such a fantastic candidate. But we have to listen about this endorsement issue.!/Agonzo1

Who can forget this exchange:

(FYI: Benton took over in May 2010 as Rand's Campaign Manager. David Adams stayed as Campaign Chairman.)

In an article dated 8-13-2013:
Sen. Rand Paul defended the campaign manager of Sen. Mitch McConnell on Tuesday, saying that he believed the former Paul aide is sincere in his efforts to get Kentucky's senior senator re-elected in 2014. Paul, in an appearance on CBS This Morning, also tried to joke about the recently leaked recording of McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton. In the recording, Benton said he was "holding his nose" as he managed McConnell's re-election campaign over the next two years. (Rand said) "I've been on a campaign bus with him before. And I'm guessing that it's McConnell who has to hold his nose sometimes." (Benton said) ‘Between you and me, I'm sort of holding my nose for two years because what we're doing here is going to be a big benefit for Rand in 2016," Benton said on the recording. "That's my long vision." (Read more here:

I endorse Derrick Grayson for US Senate from Georgia.

Screw Jesse Benton! I will never vote for a candidate who he is representing!

Rand is only doing what he needs to do...OK?

Sounds like..if someone wants to be a real TEA party patriot (note the word REAL) they should head on over to Kentucky and get to work phone banking for a candidate. Let Rand do what Rand gots to do. I will be supporting him 110% when the time comes because he does what he does and plays it smart.
We all have our path and part to play. Stop pointing fingers and do what needs to be done if you have the time and money.

Besides...the Tea Party

Besides...the Tea Party candidate wasn't even running at the time if the endorsement. The Tea Party candidate himself even acknowledged it. Facts people!

We're all human

and I think Rand Paul is endorsing yet another candidate for whom I cannot vote. To err is human. Don't support anyone more than you would support yourself.

I probably have a more than average number of comments about Rand Paul that would be considered "negative", but I really like him and think he's a nice guy and a smart politician.

I stand with TMOT. Endorsements be damned! I don't care who you are or how much I agree with you, I'm going to make my decisions myself.

Let Rand do whatever he wants to do, but your comments like "RAND PAUL or NOT AT ALL" and "supporting him 110%" concern me. You're free to think and feel however you like, but the general run of the mill here at DailyPaul is highly independent thought. I am afraid of any cult of personality. A young and energetic woman I know supported Barack Obama in 2008, along with all of her friends. That woman later realized what terror she voted in, and she became my wife. I voted for George W. Bush in 2000, and I defended him until almost the end of his second term! (Now you can tell how much of an age difference there is between me and my wife, haha.)

Rand Paul endorsed Mitt Romney. I would NEVER have been able to support him. I voted for "live free" Gary Johnson. I am an odd fellow, a statistical blip. That's fine. I, and a growing number of others, refuse to give up our principles. Ron Paul endorsed Ken Cuccinelli, who was a mixed-up mess of good and bad ideals.

As far as I'm concerned, endorsements can only be bad.

Michael Nystrom's fists can punch through FUD.

Endorsements mean NOTHING.

Rand does not win elections for other people - people win elections by voting. It is up to the people to think and act as adults, examine voting records, and vote their own conscience.

People who rely on others for endorsements fall prey just as people who rely on slanted mainstream media.

Take responsibility and do the work required, per the Constitution.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

If I were Rand I would endorse the old wind bag as well

It would be a politically amateur thing not to. And if it isn't obvious by now Rand is playing politics, and quite well for better or worse.

By endorsing Mcconnel Rand puts him in his back pocket and uses him as a shield against the establisment should McConnel win. He gets another ally in the senate should McConnel lose, all the while able to say he was playing ball. He did not undermine a fellow sitting republican. It's win win either way by endorsing McConnel. Going all in for his challenger, even if he wins the challenge, sets Rand back and puts him in a tough position trying to convince the rest of the party that he isn't a divider and trying to undercut them. I think he's playing it beautifully politically speaking. That said this whole political process Rand is engaging in leaves a bad taste in my mouth. When you lay down with the dogs you get fleas...

I don't think Ron or I would play that game and would just shoot straight and do what is right. I feel Rand is trying to do whats right as well, just in a more indirect politically perilous way.

"a compass, I learnt when I was surveying, it'll... it'll point you Truth North from where you're standing, but it's got no advice about the swamps and dessert and chasm that you'll encounter along the way. If in pursuit of your destination, you plunge ahead, heedless of obstacles, and achieve nothing more than to sink in a swamp... Whats the use of knowing True North?"

Ron goes straight through the swamp to reach the destination fully knowing he may very well sink in the swamp. but he didnt because we rallied around him and pulled him through because we believed in his cause and in True North.
Rand on the other hand, seeing how far his father got but still eventually getting stuck in the swamp, seems to see the wisdom in turning when appropriate, taking a more indirect route, around, over, under treacherous obstacles but always with an eye on the true destination and direction. Along his winding path he is picking up wayward followers led astray by false leaders. Despite all this careful twisting and turning Rand occasionally plows straight through the obstacles like his Father did when it counts. Will his path reach it's destination or will he too get confused lost and led astray by his winding path? Time will tell but I applaud what he's been able to do so far. He hasn't been perfect no and has made some mistakes along the way but am I ever impressed at how well he has done so far. I don't know who else among us who could thread the needle as well as he has. I will support him where our causes align and do my own thing where they dont and I wish him well.

Principles matter.

Having principles and integrity, is a key component to the way I predict if elected, what the person would do with the office. Looks like we have seen more of the go along to get along, cuddle with the establishment, rather than fight the establishment. I don't even think rand makes these decisions with the intentions, to really want to support mitch. Which is sad, we have to much of the I will do you a favor, now i expect one in return. Isn't this everything we where fighting 2 years ago?! And should be now? And that's why no matter how much you want to spin it that it was necessary, I do not believe it was. Justin Amash, Lee Bright, Thomas Massie, Kerry Bentevolio have not compromised on there principles.

Hear! Hear!

I agree totally.

Great post! I think Ron used

Great post!

I think Ron used his heart as a political compass, and Rand uses a combination of heart, smarts, and cajones.

I like the three prong approach.

Never be afraid to ask simple questions.

It's bold strategy cotton

Let's see if it pays off.

As long as he keeps his wits about him and doesnt go to far off track he has my support. My support is for liberty not the man, but when his efforts push towards it mine will be right along side.

I am 99% with Ron Paul. 50%

I am 99% with Ron Paul. 50% with Rand Paul..... He says too many things to please everyone and without giving an unqualified answer, like Ron Paul. He comes across like a pander and politician. Hate that about him.

If you disagree with me on anything you are not a real libertarian...

I know why......... Rand endorsed mitch

Look who replied to the endorsement, Jesse Benton.. I was thinking about supporting Rand. But, guess who will be running his campaign Jesse tard Benton. Thats right it's all about insider deals. How about this.. Tom Davis 2016!

Rand who?

Rand who?

Rand continues to make one

Rand continues to make one step forward and two back. This is another example of the Rand back step. Rand has a habit now of endorsing badly. Maybe he should just not do it...

Mitch McConnell

Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley has a "gun control lite" bill he's selling to weak-kneed Senators on Capitol Hill
and what's even worse, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says, "it might be something I can support."

OH... have fun day :)

If Jesse Benton is his

If Jesse Benton is his campaign manager he's got a good shot at losing.

Sly, Super Sneaky.

Hey. Is that how you got your monicker? I like it.

Debbie's picture

Wrong. Jesse helped run Rand's senate campaign and he won

with an unexpected Randslide. I'm not an apologist for Jesse Benton, just sayin' . . .

What a disappointment. DP

What a disappointment. DP please stop posting Rand Paul stuffs on Daily Paul. He has become irrelevant, and worse, he is co-opting the liberty movement into neocon direction. And its just sad to see all the daily paulers blinded by him just because his dad is Ron Paul.. face it guys, Rand Paul is NOT Ron Paul.. Rand is a neocon sellout.

Who is this "Tea party" candidate?

Just because they have the label "Tea party" doesn't mean they are any better than McConnell. Is he better?

Support our only liberty candidate in the senate...or don't. That's up to you.

I suppose you feel like a proper libertarian making Rands decisions for him. Conform regardless of your reasons or we attack you and immediately dismiss any good you have done.

that's just grand

David Adams was Rand's campaign manager in 2010.

"....Kentucky Republican Liberty Caucus chairman David Adams, who launched Paul’s Senate bid and served as Paul’s campaign manager through the 2010 primaries, and other tea party leaders to mount a primary challenge against McConnell."

David Adams was there when Rand needed him to get elected. Now, finish that thought.
