Rand Paul Endorses Mitch McConnell in 2014 Senate Race, Won't Back Tea Party Challenge

Patrick Howley | March 27, 2013 | Daily Caller

The Daily Caller has learned that Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul is endorsing Sen. Mitch McConnell for re-election in 2014, ending speculation that Paul would back a tea party challenge to the Senate minority leader.

“Rand Paul has endorsed McConnell,” Jesse Benton, McConnell’s 2014 campaign manager, told The Daily Caller.

Benton, who has worked for both Rand Paul and his father, former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, is credited by insiders with brokering Paul’s support for McConnell.

And so.....you figure you know this guy better than Rand?

You know him so well that you feel you can vouch for his character?

Frankly, I've been friends with people and worked with people then I learned later that I don't agree with their ideas.

Hell, I wouldn't vote for some of my family because of where they stand on some issues. Just because someone has helped you in the past does not make them liberty minded or of good moral character.

And Rand must have known Romney better then us.

He sure acts like him.

SteveMT's picture

By your logic, can you vouch for the character of Ron Paul?

We know all about the 100% solid gold character of Ron Paul. However, Rand must certainly know Ron Paul better than we do. Why should we question Rand's endorsement of Romney rather than Ron Paul? We should just accept Rand as the end all final truth in the decision making process. Rand knows best, so we must also accept that the character of Mitch McConnell far exceeds that of David Adams because Rand says so? At the time that Adams was working for Rand, wasn't it McConnell who was doing all in his power to get candidate Rand Paul out of the Senate race? Adams paid his political dues to Rand. We did also by supporting Rand's Campaign. However, the reciprocal will not be forthcoming. Such is political expediency.

lame argument and you know it

No need to go round and round on the reasons bad or good for the Romney endorsement with you. That horse has been beat to death.

Why not you examine the type of endorsements Ron Paul himself has made? Hold his feet to the fire on those...or don't. At least be consistent.

SteveMT's picture

Lame arguments? Please.

What Rand did would be equivalent to Ron Paul throwing Jesse Benton under the bus. As bad as Benton was, Ron Paul did not do this (as much as I wanted him to). Benton was Ron Paul's campaign manager. David Adams was Rand's campaign manager. Who is the consistent one, and who is playing politics?

Think about this

Junior Senator Rand Paul is now in a position to seriously influence whether or not the Senate Minority leader gets reelected. I know Mitch is a...rhymes with Mitch...but this could be a good move on Rand's part. He has two options, support a tea party challenger, or support Mitch. If he has concluded that the likely challenger is either (a) not much better than Mitch, and/or (b) has no chance of beating Mitch, then the best option might be to throw your support behind Mitch, on the understanding that Mitch will OWE YOU ONE down the road. That's how politics works. I don't believe Mitch is an evil man, I believe he is a spineless man with no goal other than reelection. Therefore, if he gets reelected due to Rand's support, it wouldn't totally surprise me to find that Mitch has a sudden pro-liberty revelation. Dig it?

Ron Paul 2016

Is all hope lost now that Ron Paul is retiring from politics? Not as long as we keep fighting. If 100,000 supporters pledge by June 2013 that we will support Ron Paul 2016, it might still be possible to convince Ron Paul to run for President again.Join us in expressing our approval of Ron Paul’s candidacy by signing our powerful message of support: http://www.ronpaul16.com/please-run-for-president-in-2016
Unfortunately Ron Paul didn’t win the 2012 GOP primary because the GOP establishment cheated him out of his well-deserved victory. But in 2016, things will be different if the liberty movement keeps gaining ground within the GOP. And while Ron Paul said that he is retiring from politics, a groundswell of support might motivate him to run again.Click the “Like” button for Ron Paul 2016 Sign the Ron Paul 2016 petition at RonPaul16.com Post a brief comment in support and encouragement of Ron Paul 2016 at the bottom of this page. He Gave Up....

...the fight last time, all the while continuing to solicit and collect money from supporters.

He took a dive, which I believe was to secure some deal with the 'establishment' for Lil' Rand's political fortunes.

I, for one, would not support him if he ran again, albeit I am glad his voice, views and opinions are still being put out there.

I see you decide to comment

I see you decide to comment on this fine site once a year. I think you have an agenda.

Step back and think practically for a moment...

...does anyone really believe that another attempt by Ron Paul is in the cards, or would even be a good idea?

he does not have a touch of the stockholm syndrome after what happened in the Senate race ;)

Rand Paul

Like the song:
Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

Now she clutched him to her bosom, "You're so beautiful," she cried
"But if I hadn't brought you in by now you might have died"
Now she stroked his pretty skin and then she kissed and held him tight
But instead of saying thanks, that snake gave her a vicious bite
"Take me in, oh tender woman
Take me in, for heaven's sake
Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

"I saved you," cried that woman
"And you've bit me even, why?
You know your bite is poisonous and now I'm going to die"
"Oh shut up, silly woman," said the reptile with a grin
"You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in
"Take me in, oh tender woman
Take me in, for heaven's sake
Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake

Rand Paul showed himself to be the snake he is when he turned his back on his own father and endorsed the establishment's candidate - Mitt Romney. He is a "get along and go along" kind of politician.

Only fools and neo-cons will support him.

Rand is holding his cards close to his chest...

...by endorsing Mitch. I don't like McConnell. And as many point out, "Rand ain't his dad".

There isn't a chance in hell of Rand getting elected for president, unless he plays the system. Anyone else got better idea that's (as the sheeple say "electable") let 'er rip.

Each move, in this intricate chess game of public perception, that Rand makes like this is a move closer to POTUS. As much as I pray against the wicked people in charge will do anything to prevent that from happening, I realize that we're not likely ever going to get this ball back in possession, because of the Christians in this nation that have forsaken ALL truth.

Restore the Foundations - "If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?"

Hopefully, Lindsey Graham is the target

I wouldn't vote for him, but if you have to make nice with some people in the establishment, you want them to be in a significant position (McConnell's the senate minority leader) and you want to be able to work with them somewhat... McConnell came out in support of Rand during the filibuster and has teamed up with Rand to work towards hemp legalization.

Now, if by supporting McConnell, Rand is able to help deny establishment support for Graham then that could be a huge win. This is the main battle ground that I see.

I agree

Mitch is an establishment Senator, but I think he sees the way the wind blows. He's buddying up with Rand out of sheer self-preservation. And THAT'S FINE BY ME, we need all the help we can get, even if it's motivated by polling numbers rather than principles. Meanwhile, a better target for a challenge in 2014 is Graham, who is so far up the arse of the MIC there's no chance of him ever turning our way.

Fight everyone all the time and lose, or pick your battles and win some.

Support M1tch's B1tches! Rand '16!

Or not. Who can say? I'd still like to think he is "boiling the frog", or "angling for bottom feeders." I prefer to be optimistic, but I'm resigned to being cynical.

Rand aint his Dad

Dr Paul made a material impact on my life as man, husband and father. I will be eternally thankful for his example.

That said, I am sure Rand watched his father, close up and personal, stand against the tide for all those years. In some ways you could make a credible argument that dad did not accomplish much in the end.

Over those years I am sure Rand had ideas about different strategies that would have been more effective. As a Senator, he can execute on those ideas about promoting limited govt, the constitution, and getting what he considers "more" done.

I respect Rand and will focus on the fruits of his labor. I will reserve judgement until he has completed a term.

I may be blinded by the respect I have for Dr Paul but I cannot believe his son will not do the right thing, as he understands it, for more than not.

PS. Go Rand

Liberty = Responsibility

Oh but you buttsuckers here

Oh but you buttsuckers here are voting me down everytime i say RAND IS BOUGHT OFF. What else is he going to have to do to prove it to you? Sign the patriot act in again for another 50 years?

I recommend

That every go read this article by Nate Silver: http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/20/how-viab...

Once you read this, you will understand what Rand is doing.

While challenging the establishment, he is also fitting in with the establishment by making these key endorsements. By doing so, he is enabling himself to appeal to all Republicans within the party and arguably gaining approval from the most important group that enables one to get the nomination.

Purists will no doubt condemn this, but you know what, people who go by that approach will never become a serious contender within any major political party.

I think Rand is a very smart politician. And i think he is 'politicianing' the politicians, not the people.

Well said

"Alas! I believe in the virtue of birds. And it only takes a feather for me to die laughing."

Spot on.

Yep, "'politicianing' the politicians" for sure.

I have one little question...

Did McConnel endorse RAND during his Senate run?

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

I don't care

who Rand endorses. I want to know who is going to run against McConnel.

SteveMT's picture

Endorsements for Romney, Ryan, and now McConnell.

I don't like Rand's gambit with these endorsements and what they will achieve. If Rand had asked our opinion about this endorsement, what would we have told him? I imagine that the answer would have run 1,000 to 1 against McConnell. I guess that's why he didn't ask us. He didn't care.

What Rand endorses here is

What Rand endorses here is meaningless - he knows we won't listen to him :)

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.

SteveMT's picture

Who Rand endorses does matter. This is a character issue.

It's called doing the right thing, like Rand should have also done with his father last year. This Liberty candidate wasn't just any Liberty candidate. David Adams was the impetus to get Rand into the Senate.

"The move quashes a determined effort by Kentucky Republican Liberty Caucus chairman David Adams, who launched Paul’s Senate bid and served as Paul’s campaign manager through the 2010 primaries, and other tea party leaders to mount a primary challenge against McConnell."

So Rand throws his father and now David Adams under the bus. The word loyalty, or the lack of it, comes to mind. Consistency is what is lacking in Rand's actions. He is endorsing amoral people without a soul. That is a dangerous game, especially with Liberty being such a rare commodity in the Senate.
