Jesus Christ, Victor Over The State

With the approach of the celebration of Jesus' resurrection, (Sunday) I was thinking about the relationship between Ron Paul's faith and Liberty.
Many on this forum agree, if we applied the Golden Rule to our foreign policy, it would greatly improve the world. What may not be so well known is how Jesus' death and resurrection were a heavenly battle tactic against the tyranny of both religious legalists and the State.

Jesus was constantly upending the status quo, especially where two groups were concerned. One group was the religious legalists, who were divided into the Sadducees and the Pharisees. Though Jesus had more in common with the Pharisees, the hypocrites among them received the greatest condemnation from Him. This came only after they provoked Him time after time by honoring their own laws above God's law, including the choice to deny your parents aid if you had dedicated the money to the Temple). As for the statists, they were represented by the Herodians, who sometimes teamed up with the Pharisees to try to trip Jesus up. (Matthew 22:15 - 22) The question they asked? Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar or not? His answer? Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to Him.

As for the Sadducees, they had the priesthood, and sufficient control over the Sanhedrin in Jesus day. They also asked the most entertaining question: If seven brothers marry a widow, whose wife will she be in the Resurrection? (for Jesus' answer, read Matthew 23:23-33 :) Both the Sadducees and Pharisees had a group of 'teachers of the law' who affiliated with them, however, there were also teachers of the law who were unaffiliated. One of them (Matthew lists him as affiliated with the Pharisees) came to Jesus with the best question and reply to the answer: "Of all the Commandments, which is the most important?"

Jesus answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength, and the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as your self. On these two laws hang all the Law and the Prophets." (Mark 12:28 - 34, with Matthew 22: 34 - 40)

The teacher replied: "Well said, Teacher! You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other than Him. To Love him with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and to love your neighbor as your self are more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

When Jesus saw he had answered wisely, He answered, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God!". This silenced the rest of his questioners, at least for the day. On another day, which Tom Mullins refers to in his wonderful post, Jesus Christ, Libertarian,( http://www.dailypaul.com/152999/jesus-christ-libertarian ) a crowd of legalists are trumped by Jesus' superior interpretation of the law. They had chosen to drag a woman out who had committed adultery, while they were breaking the law in the very act of bringing her out alone. (Deuteronomy 22:22) He deftly points this out by only permitting one without sin to cast the first stone, after first writing in the sand.

The legalists joined the statists in their attempt to trap Jesus, and with a traitor's assistance, they thought they succeeded. After a mock trial before Pilate, who attempted to wash his hands of the whole affair, they pushed for his execution. They mocked Him on the way to the cross, both the Centurions and the members of the Sanhedrin. (With the exception of two notables, Joseph of Aramathea and Nicodemus)

The Roman soldiers nailed Him to the cross, and tossed insults at Him, as did the religious leaders. Jesus maintained His composure, even to the point of dismissing His spirit to the Hands of God. Normally the Romans controlled how long the victim suffered by breaking the legs or not. When He died, the Temple 'veil, a thick curtain dividing the court from the Temple proper, split in two! This had an impact on one soldier there, who had never seen someone crucified dismiss their spirit. "Surely this is the Son of God!", he proclaimed.

The tearing of the Temple curtain displayed visibly what He had already accomplished spiritually, freedom from the tyranny of sin. (Luke 23:44 - 49) Two members of the Sanhedrin who did not agree with the decision, as upright men, came to ensure His body was not just thrown to the side. Joseph of Aramathea claimed the body from Pilate. Then he and Nicodemus prepared it for burial, and sealed the tomb. Pilate is not out of the story yet, however.

The unbelieving Sadducees and Pharisees then requested from Pilate that a guard be placed at the tomb, and the Roman seal was placed at the tomb. This set them up for the greatest fall in to their own trap in history. Pilate, who had wanted to wash his hands of the whole affair, ended up placing the statist seal of approval on the death of Jesus.

In the end, neither the Seal of Rome (which brought the death penalty to anyone who dared to break it unauthorized) nor the religious leaders could prevent the inevitable triumph of Jesus. His resurrection was a triumph not only over legalists, but over TPTB, death and Satan themselves. The complete victory of liberty is assured, just as the Declaration of Independence was followed by the Treaty of Paris! So the Resurrection of Messiah will be followed by His just government!

Excellent Post!

I just saw this, thank you for posting! People who are not familiar with the Bible often are not aware of how many prophesies Jesus Christ actually fulfilled; many of them written 500 years and longer before he actually was born. A great example is found in Matthew 27:46, when Jesus utters one of his final statements "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?". To many of the Gentiles (non Jews) in the crowd it must have appeared to them that Jesus was confirming what many of the Pharisees had been proclaiming all along; that he had not in fact come from God.

However, to the Jewish people, including the Pharisees who were present, that statement did exactly the opposite. They would have known immediately that Jesus was quoting directly from Psalm 22, which was written by King David some 500 years earlier. Psalm 22 states in part "My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring..." this Psalm goes on to provide chilling detail of much of what Jesus had just and was continuing to suffer: "But I am a worm, and no man, a reproach of men, and despised of the people....they shake the head saying, He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him......I am poured out like water, and my bones are out of joint, my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd....and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet...they part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture....

Psalm 22:24-31; however, goes on to state that God "hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him he heard...the meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord; and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. For the Kingdom is the Lord's; and he is the governor among the nation...a seed shall serve him: it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he had done this".

In quoting Psalm 22 Jesus had done the exact opposite of what that statement appears to be saying. He was in fact declaring once again to every Jewish person present (who would have know that Psalm word by word) that he was the Messiah that this and all the other prophesies had spoken of! How this must have pierced so many of them to their very souls!

How grateful I am, as a Christian, that the Lord loved us so much that he gave his life as a ransom for us to provide us with the ultimate freedom; freedom from the grip of sin and freedom from the wages of sin, which is death (both physical and spiritual)! How blessed we are to have a God that submit himself even unto death that we may be free! Whom the Son sets free, he is free indeed!

Great comment! Thank you Denise B

No matter what your heritage we all worship the same God, whether you be Jew, Muslin or Christian…..the God of Abraham…….I LOVE ALL MY BROTHERS AND SISTER!

How ironic (or prophetic depending on your view) that The State and The Church( the political State Church) crucified the only “Perfect Libertarian” that has walked amongst my heritage…….My Enemy…….The State and her Church.

Loved the story, so im gonna add a few things

Pilot knew who Christ was, even had the sign made for him that said "This is the King of the Jews" for his execution, which the Jewish leaders told him to change it to "He said he was the king of the jews", to which Pilot denied them.

John 19
19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews.

20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

A common misconception is that Roman soldiers stood guard at the tomb. It is true they asked Pilot for men, and he laughed at them, and basically said "You have men, you try and stop it from opening"

Matthew 27
63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

I missed that, *sigh*

65 Pilate said unto them,' Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.' So the Temple Guard may have been the guard on duty, if so ,then my question would be:

Why would they need to bribe their own temple guard or the guards have reason to fear the governor? I guess the seal on the tomb may have been reason enough to fear, but wouldn't the Roman soldiers have more to fear?

What it might be

It may be possible that they were still Roman Guards, but under the command of the Jewish Leaders. The Romans made sure the Jews ran themselves and did not often partake in their affairs, this is why at first Pilot kept saying "take him and kill him yourselves" and they said "we do not have the death penalty!" (in a manner of words)

The leaders did not want to bloody their hands on the sabbath, but they did so anyway, because Pilot refused to execute Christ.

While Pilot did not partake in the execution, there WERE Roman soldiers at the crucifixion. It's entirely possible, Roman Soldiers were issued to the Jewish Leaders to enforce their own laws.

IMO though, Pilot was laughing at them in that last verse. Pilot knew he would rise again, basically was saying "ya you go stop him, Good Luck"

My husband suggested a third possibility

that being a public/private partnership. Your thoughts?

Temple Guards?

Jerusalem was policed by the Temple guards, a not inconsiderable body of men. Josephus tells us that during the Jewish revolt of 66-74, some 8500 guards died protecting the High Priest. He probably exaggerated the numbers considerably - but a force even a fraction of that size would have had significant power.

Just an educated guess but could be totally wrong. I wasn't there.

Perfect post for today ((((Libra_me))))))!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Not all who call Me, Lord, lord

Belong to Me.", Jesus himself said, and the workers of lawlessness are the first group He mentions. He also warns those who judge others that they will be judged by the same standard. (Matthew 7, vs. 1-6 & Luke 6:37-42) This is why if Christians presume to be so bold as to condemn sinners, they had better heed what Jesus said about it. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my reply. (And thank you for the bump, voted you up for the valid point)
