Best Rant Of 2012: GMO Seeds - Just The Facts - A Final Discussion!

Who knew a Cajun could rant? Thought they were just good cooks, like crawfish etouffee, gumbo, boudin, or zydeco music? Here's a case of still waters run deep.

Suffice it to say... someone for sure pressed the wrong button on this otherwise typical, layed-back, fun-loving, good-natured, non-confrontational, probably apolitical, just wants to grow a garden and teach/show us how, Cajun, and out came a Libertarian Rant like none I've ever heard.

Good on you "mhpgardener" because I agree, "Who can you trust? No one. Not the govt., not labels [sic]...If YOU don't grow it, you don't know it. If you want to know it, YOU better grow it!"

He makes some good points

He makes some good points especially about stop buying corn and soy products and milk etc.

I disagree with him in labeling. Companies should be required to label for GMO products. He is correct that it is not a guarantee however he is wrong if he thinks everyone will stop buying it most people won't care.

Also he is wrong about buying hybrid seeds and opting for heirloom or heritage instead. Again most won't care and if demand spikes for heirloom then seed companies will start carrying them more.

Also we need to be vigilant as he sort of contradicts himself when he says you can't trust labels so how can we trust the seed you buy at the home and grocery stores are not GMO? Some guy at the extension office says so? I can guarantee you that Monsanto and Cronies have their eyes on that market eventually if not already that is why they buy up companies.

I do like his comment if you don't grow it you don't know it. So we should opt for heirloom seeds demand labels in the markets stop buying products at the market that are suspect and save seed shop at farmers markets or barter with people who you know grow clean etc.

Are U thinking/saying ...forget Extension Depts?

He seems to be comfortable with them-I'm not-I grew up with them-4H, FFA...they were learning from us - not the other way around...

Sometimes you can get good

Sometimes you can get good information from the extension office depends on who the agent is but him using them as an authority on whether the seed you can buy for your home garden are GMO or not is ridiculous. What is the guy at the extensions offices source for that information? And as you said they are still government flunkies who are just doing a job and repeating what they are told often outdated BS or propaganda and often they know less then you do. Always verify anything you are told by them or anyone for that matter.

Very informative, thanks, not really a rant at all

The guy sounds very reasonable and chalk full of information and good sense. Can anyone else here in the DP farming/gardening community concur with what he's saying as reliable information?

For a Cajun,

believe me, this is a rant. LOL. By the 10 min mark, he's ranting. But as to your question about reliability - good one. Hope someone chimes in on that.
