Walmart's Death Grip on Groceries Is Making Life Worse for Millions of People

Friday, 29 March 2013 09:33 By Stacy Mitchell, AlterNet | Report

Walmart's growing control of our food system has been to intensify the rural and urban poverty that drives unhealthy food choices.

When Michelle Obama visited a Walmart in Springfield, Missouri, a few weeks ago to praise the company's efforts to sell healthier food, she did not say why she chose a store in Springfield of all cities. But, in ways that Obama surely did not intend, it was a fitting choice. This Midwestern city provides a chilling look at where Walmart wants to take our food system.

Has anyone noticed it's the people

who grew up well off who look down on Wal-Mart the most?

My father-in-law waxed poetic about how great it was that the clerk used to wrap your select amount of flour for you. I was appalled to hear about such inefficiency. It wouldn't be so bad if he were talking in the context of a high-end grocery that put on a show for the people who could afford to pay the extra cost of that clerk, but these conversations only come up in the context of looking down on Wal-Mart and the changes it brought so it's more about what poor people do with their money than what rich people do with theirs.

Well, since that grocery he was talking about was the only one in his hometown, it'd be good if a more efficient competitor forced its prices down. How many people had to go hungry in his town who wouldn't have if it weren't for the grocery catering to the people who wanted to pay to feel pampered to the detriment of efficiency?

Wal-Mart is pushing to tax you more

Why corporations become despised: Wal-Mart has gone to Washington to lobby for an unconstitutional Internet sales tax. Rather than lobbying for lower taxes for everyone, they want the force of government used to tax us more. Federal Internet sales tax name - "Marketplace Fairness Act". Anytime government uses the term fair - you will be getting screwed.

http://lewrockwell.com/dilorenzo/dilorenzo249.html

"This proposed Act would have the federal government become the price-fixing cartel enforcer for the state governments that would then tax all internet sales from any source. As is the case with most federal intervention, such a law would likely be enforced in such a way that there would be little or no tax competition between the states – the federal government will strive to enforce one single (high) rate of state sales tax for internet purchases."

"The Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution prohibits the imposition of state taxes on interstate commerce because the founders understood that free interstate trade was essential to prosperity. But as I have said, the government is no longer interested in the well-being of the public (if it ever was): It is interested in its own pay, perks, and pensions, and the more the merrier. Hence its never-ending quest to tax anything and everything. Internet commerce has been a rare bright spot during the "Great Recession" so naturally, the government is attempting to cut if off at the legs with onerous new taxes."

My Mother works for walmart

My Mother works for walmart and she is more happy now than i have seen her in a while. she had her own store but it was to much work and not stable. she works in the garden section and gets to be around flowers all day. she is 68 years old and able to retire. she also got sales associate of the year and she never even graduated high school.

    All that GMO food

Get it in you. No doubt Walmart offers the 'highest' quality in Mexican produce.

    Walmart, whats that? I get

Walmart, whats that? I get most my food at HEB.

OH NO! NOT BIG EVIL WALMART!

    Low prices!?!? Variety!?!? Convenience!?!?

Who do they think they are, giving consumers what they want?

    No.7's picture

Wal Mart has saved consumers millions of dollars

and has effectively enriched the lives of every American and arguably every human worldwide.

The premise of this article is silly. Wal Mart doesn't make people eat unhealthy. Poor personal choices make people eat unhealthy. Wal Mart has never forced anyone to buy bad food from them. This is a personal responsibility problem using Wal Mart as a scapegoat for poor personal choices.

"effectively enriched the lives of every American"

With the exception of their lowly employees! Sure helps out the manager of each store if he can cut the amount spent for employee wages (and forget about benefits), he gets a bigger bonus!
Don't get upset at a WalMart employee if they seem grouchy, you would be too if you were earning minimum wage with absolutely no benefits.
Health care? Try Medicaid, which we all pay for - so the prices you see on the shelves do not reflect the true cost of what you are paying.

    No.7's picture

No one is forcing them to work there

In fact, I'm pretty sure that every Wal Mart employee chooses to go to work every day. Other companies offer benefits you know...

    Surely...

if Walmart ceased to exist, all of it's employees would be better off.

Don't they know it would be better to be unemployed, than to make $7.50 an hour?

    Hey, your right!

It's easy to pay rent, buy groceries, buy fuel for the car, pay for the books and lunches for the children, and hope like hell no one gets sick.
    On $220.00*/week - that's $880/month - Before Taxes!

What country do you live in?

*220.00 = (7.50 X 30 (hours)) almost NO full time positions left, especially since Obamacare! And that's if you are lucky enough to get 30 hours/week.

    Well, with all those downvotes

I guess ChinaMart wins again. And we still loose, at the wages paid there the employees are eligible for food stamps (which we pay for) and state health care (which we pay for). And why? Free Trade, NAFTA, GATT all industry going overseas for lower taxes and less regulations,,,etc,,,,etc. Oh well, won't be long till everyone is going to be crying "What Happened?"

It's Walmart's fault that people use foodstamps?

If I pay a landscaper $7.50 an hour am I an evil employer, and responsible for them if they use food stamps?

As Castro and Chavez demonstrated in superior countries

Zero job offering zero hours per week at zero dollars per hour is a central-planning recipe for guaranteed prosperity.

    the farmers markets are

the farmers markets are getting more attention and the supply is great because we have many rural farm areas just outside the city. This post makes me think more about what I read... this is a mischaracterization of a very southern conservative region... the real question is why would Michele show up in the republican stronghold of southern Missouri.. another jab would be the people going to walmart were never going to the farmers market anyways

    I personally live in

I personally live in Springfield. The markets have changed 180 degrees.. walmart is finally putting good food in there, even if it is GM... its my choice to eat it. I personally have been making better food choices and they are providing me with them; yeah lets burn down walmart. The farmers markets are getting bigger every year regardless... thank you Wal-mart and my local community for pulling these services into my area, if it werent for walmart the poor would be even more unhealthy in this area, this article is bunk.

everyone just needs to grow their own food

seriously. Problem solved. Don't send the fascist corporatists any more of your monetary votes. You don't even need a yard. People are growing food in apartments. Youtube has a plethora of different DIY setups you can do in your home.

    This guy is right. Growing

This guy is right. Growing your own food isnt that hard. When I grow stuff, I spend maybe a few hours a week tops on it. The key is to let the plants grow themselves.
The hard part isnt growing the food, its properly preparing an area of soil so it isnt choked with weeds/crab grass. Once you do that however, it takes minimal maintainence to grow stuff.(if something is going to be GM, I wish they would blend crab grass genes in some of the food so its almost impossible to get rid of, haha)

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

    You don't have to wait

to get something similar. Kudzu - the "vine that ate the South" is also edible! And parts of the country are fighting it daily, trying to eradicate it! Don't kill it - eat it!

    http://www.thekitchn.com/did-you-know-you-can-eat-kudzu-92488

I grew up in Georgia, where it was common to see groves of trees and even utility poles and barnhouses covered with kudzu, the "vine that ate the South." What few people know is that the plant is edible, and delicious.

    Kudzu is edible, who knew?!?!

I've spent my entire life (literally, my dad had a garden and it was my job to pull up the weeds - Kudzu) trying to kill the crap and I could've just eaten it. I just told my dad and he's speechless, Ha!
    We live in GA, btw.

    I live in

Oklahoma, and there ain't none here!
Ever since I read that it was edible (several years ago) I've been wanting to try some. Could make a great supplement for a SHTF situation!

Hey, I didnt know that was

Hey, I didnt know that was edible. Thats cool. If only more people knew this, we probably wouldnt have scenes like the cops holding the people back as food got thrown away from that post the other day.

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

Ya, forget about division of labor and specialization...

    That is a terrible idea

    .

yes having a renewable source of food

that you know is safe to eat and which saves you money is a terrible thing. knowing that you are not contributing to corruption is such a terrible thing as well.

Regardless if food from walmart is healthy or not makes no difference in this context. Don't kid yourselves. Walmart sends money to washington and state govs to push legistlation their way just as much as the others corporatists. That "oh well everyone else is doing it" argument is ridic. Walmart should be setting the example if they are so good, not continuing the trend of business and government collusion. Giving walmart you monetary vote is continuing to condone the status quo. wake up people. Stop being a part of the problem. This is like people who bitch about hollywood's gun control push, then going to the movie theatres and sending money to all those same idiots that are advocating for the removal of your rights.
