Are You A Civilian? Do You Want To Be? What Are You Saying When You Say "I'm A Civilian?"

When I saw this it blew me away check this out:

http://1828.mshaffer.com/d/word/civilian

Confirmed by Black's Law Dictionary 5th Edition:

Civilian. Private citizen, as distinguished from such as belong to the armed services, or (in England) the church. One who is skilled or versed in the civil law.

So when you are walking into a court you are presumed to be someone who is "skilled or versed in civil [roman] law." Funny how knowing the meanings of words really changes things.

It's important to note that "civil law" is not "common law." Civil law is complicated on purpose. Common law is a matter of common sense and statutes do not apply.

April Fool

This is an April Fool isn't it?

Nope.

Feel free to go look it up for yourself :)

Then you don't know how to

Then you don't know how to read a definition.

Words can have different independent meanings.
Yes a civilian is defined as

ci·vil·ian (s-vlyn)
n.
1. A person following the pursuits of civil life, especially one who is not an active member of the military, the police, or a belligerent group.
2. A person who does not belong to a particular group or engage in a particular activity.
3. A specialist in Roman or civil law.

This doesn't mean all civilians are presumed to be experts in Roman or civil law.

It means a civilian is presumed to be in one or more of the three subsets.

I think you're missing the point

you don't get to pick what they presume.

So what do you think they are most likely to presume in these courts of contract?

There is no point to miss

I'm not the one who's picking what they presume, you did.

You said

>So what do you think they are most likely to presume in these courts of contract?

They are not going to presume anything.

I'm liking that.

I'm liking that.
