Rand Paul Wants to Close Some of the 900 US Military Bases on the Planet

Rand Paul Supports Some Military Bases On Foreign Soil, A Big Difference From His Dad

"A brief item on Rand Paul by Time's Alex Altman describes the Republican Kentucky senator speaking recently to a group of Republican women in his home state and catching himself when he brings up the idea of shutting down U.S. military bases on foreign soil.

“I’m not saying don’t have any,” he said. "I'm just saying maybe not 900. I mean, I’d rather have one at Fort Campbell and Fort Knox than one in Timbuktu.”

And it turns out Paul is not opposed to keeping military bases in Iraq, or in that part of the world, for the foreseeable future. When he sat down a few weeks ago with a few reporters at an event hosted by National Review, I brought up a report that morning in The Wall Street Journal about the CIA taking responsibility for U.S. operations in Iraq from the Defense Department, and asked Paul if that was a good model for him, or whether he wanted "total removal" of U.S. forces from the country.

Paul said he supported something "in between all that."

"I think having some places and bases where we could orchestrate attacks if we had to, if there's a regrouping of people, wouldn't be too unreasonable. But I think out patrolling the villages after 12 years, the Afghans should be doing that," Paul said.

A few minutes later, Paul came back to the issue of closing military bases on foreign soil, and reiterated a middle ground approach.

"There are some who want to come completely home. Some want to stay forever. And the answer might be somewhere in the middle that we'll still have bases in places, but we don't necessarily have to maybe have 900 bases. Maybe we have less," he said."

Having bases in Europe, Germany in particular, is just silly.

Any country with over 10,000 nuclear warheads plus delivery vehicles AND bio. AND chemical warfare AND daisy cutters AND laser satellites AND Darpa just doesn't bases overseas.

Like our foreign embassies, soldiers overseas are targets, not weapons of effective modern war.

Sounds like a fair approach

lets start somewhere and work from there.

I don't remember Ron Paul

I don't remember Ron Paul ever saying he would close every military base on foreign soil. He also avoids speaking in absolute terms.

I don't think anyone wants to

I don't think anyone wants to get rid of the military base guarding Fort Knox.

Heaven forbid

A Ron Paul administration would be taking actions to bring the troops home and shutting down military bases from everywhere, just not by tomorrow. So how is this a Big Difference from his fathers?

His name is Edward Snowden

What is Capitalism?

Some people can only think in terms of extremes; All or Nothing.

Ron Paul is an extremist kook... just like the neocons and neoleft have been saying all along.

We need someone who is "reasonable". Someone who will maintain the empire, keep fiat money and fight wars for Israel. As long as they do those things then it is ok for them to jibber-jabber about individual freedom and assorted hooha. Rand is perfect for this role...

How many military bases does

How many military bases does "The Base" have? (Al Qaeda in Arabic)

Nice!! Great!!! Only problem

Nice!! Great!!! Only problem Rand Paul lies. Let see what he says in a week....

“Any man who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the government take care of him better take a closer look at the American Indian.” ― Henry Ford.

Rand lies about what?

Being a Rand fan, I can't wait to hear what Rand has to say everyday.. so what lies?

It is not my experience that "most" people believe this

This statement from Rand is simply not true.
“The Life at Conception Act legislatively declares what most Americans believe and what science has long known — that human life begins at the moment of conception, and therefore is entitled to legal protection,”

Here is why; Most Americans in my experience, especially those that support liberty, say just the opposite about "legal protection".
"Most Americans" actually say something more like this:
Believe what you want. Act on your beliefs in your own life but the above statement is dead wrong on the politics of abortion and the federal government. No matter what you might believe you can't force a woman the carry a fetus without using force you have no right to use. That decision is between her and her god and maybe her family if she chooses to include them only.

I will again remind those that believe they can impose their will on this abortion issue through government and claim to favor liberty, that their control must not reach into another person's body regardless of their noble intentions or their beliefs on life. That is a slope I care not to slide down and I believe most Americans(especially those in the Liberty movement)agree. I also believe Rand's politic playing is going to lose him more than he could hope to gain in the end by becoming just like those who he would claim to oppose.

“I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.”
- Thomas Jefferson

“Any man who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the government take care of him better take a closer look at the American Indian.” ― Henry Ford.

Rand takes the Federal Government out of the issue

It's not up to the federal government o "protect" a Mother's right to terminate her children becaue she choses to see tham as a paracit.

Rand isn't telling or suggestion what any pregnant women should or not do. He is telling the state to get out.. it is not up to the tax payer ot the fed to pay for abortions or irth control.. that is up to the states.

Have you read what he just

Have you read what he just introduced to to the Senate?
Life at Conception Act
I am interested in your thoughts in relation to my above statement. THNX

Either ...

Use it or lose it.

Close all bases in EU and bulid a huge masive one on some south Pacific island pointed at China. That would be a good compromise imo. Other Pacific bases could be closed too.

Closing some is better than closing none.

But it is not as good as closing all of them. Closing all the bases was one of the biggest selling points of Ron for me.

Thanks for the article.

Are you an Extremist?

Are you an Extremist?

Fox and CNN...

should hire you as the opposition speaker whenever Ron Paul is on one of their shows. You have a natural gift for calling Ron Paul and Ron's ideas extremist and kooky.

And you are doing a pretty good job of attacking people with one word ad hominems here on Daily Paul for expressing support for Ron's philosophies.

Perhaps the level of freedom of expression you are allowed is too extreme...

Not really, I just was sold on closing all the bases. If you call that an extremist, then I guess so.
