Public Matching Funds

Matching Funds:

Dear Dr. Ron Paul:

I personally had the IRS take funds from me in the amount or $1000+ and deposited into the government coffers (in the form of taxes). I can think of no other more noble cause for the allocation of these funds to be spent by you for your campaign. Therefore, I request that you take the matching funds for your presidential campaign in good conscious and also for my own peace of mind that these funds are spent by the government for a most noble cause and in a manner that has my utmost and full support. And may also be the only time that I can directly allocate where my funds are spent, even if only in a round about way.

If there are 30,000+ Ron Paul supporters that can sign a petition to this fact (30,000 x $1,000 = $30 million), there will be more than enough funds available to match every penny that the good Doctor has received in contributions to his campaign thus far. Even if it is in a round about way, it seems to be a perfectly legal way for our taxes to be used in a manner that has our full support, and allow Dr. Paul to use these funds in good conscious. What do you all think? Is it feasible or possible? Maybe also a good way for us to show the strength of our support for Dr. Ron Paul?

This letter was written by a friend who currently does not internet connection and wanted feedback from the forum about this idea.

We've already raised as much as we would be allowed to spend

in the primary. We couldn't spend it if we took it.

too many limitations....

Read the fine print folks. There is a reason McCain borrowed money against his donor list to avoid matching funds.

I know you can justify it one way or another but overall this is not consistent with RP's message.

Philosophy aside it just would not be good strategy.

He should take funds unless..

the mainstream media is going to hang the hypocrite tag on him, which may or may not backfire.

He's never gonna take it He didn't approve a gold medallion

I think he should but he won't

"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent" Thomas Jefferson

has RP made a statement about this?

if he has, then obviously that's the answer.

but if he hasn't... then I say take the money.

we want our man to have all the ammo he needs.

Paul should take matching funds!

First of all, matching funds do NOT come from your taxes, they are VOLUNTARY donations that people give at the time they file, but only if they WANT TO.

So, there is NO reason why philosophically he can't take them.

Second, in order to change the establishment you have to be a part of it...(unless you plan violent revolution from outside attack) and so, taking the funds in order to be competitive is the right thing to do.

Please stop spreading it around that this comes from your tax dollars because it doesn't.

Guess again.

IRS has admitted that they don't bother counting up how many people do or don't check that box.

What is the use of the extra money?

The money he has is enough until FEB 5th. RP will know then if he will continue or not. If he does, then more money will be raised. If he does not, this revolution should evolve into a new party (Peoples Party). This election should be totally skipped and preparations for running members from the new party for local, congress and senate seats should be started. This is just an idea.

I agree Jane...

You gotta play the game in order to ever hope to change the rules...

I don't know the law but,

if the cap is $50 million total, and we have raised $25 million, then I think it would be fine, because I really don't see us raising $25 million more on our own.

Besides, even if he does that after Super Tuesday, then he can flood all the other markets with pro-liberty advertising and at least get the message out.

Or, even better, do informercials exposing all the new unconstitutional government suveillance laws and the Halliburton detention centers.

Why can RP not take matching funds?

Is there a legal precedence for why he can't take the money?

GATA Be in to Win

he most certainly is qualified for matching funds

I personally vote that he take it, and as mentioned in this thread, have a list of injustices that preceded his decision.

matching funds

+1 I gave the maximum the very week he announced because early money has a much greater effect. I'd love to see all of our contributions doubled by those matching funds. Great sign wave and meet up in NYC last night, btw. We got lots of national coverage.

GaryJohnson2012.com On the outside chance that RP doesn't get the nomination.

It would be foolish not to take the funds,

The establishment bums aren't playing fair. All we ask for is a fair fight, and we're not getting it from the media and their controllers. Take the money and then anticipate what will come next. They'll say, "Ah Hah! Ron Paul is taking Federal Money to fund Campaign" . Be prepared to launch into a very aggressive retort as to "why". The campaign staff should have example, after example of how they've tried to marginalize Dr. Paul, and sweep him out of the way. I'd draw them in to the fight by accepting the fed money........and then be prepared to let them have it with both barrels.

Please Please

Take the matching funds RP. There is no greater use for taxpayer money at this time. Everyone else has accepted them why shouldn't we. You put earmarks in bills to get constituants money back in your district. It is how the system is set up and you have to play the game by thier rules in order to change the rules. We need the 30 mil to blast the airwaves with the message of freedom. Let it be a slap in the face to the MSM for thier blatant blackout of your campain.

I just learned that if you take matching funds you are capped

....you are capped to spending only $50 million for the ENTIRE PRIMARY SEASON.

So, after learning this....maybe this is why Dr. Paul has chosen not to.

I also learned that John Edwards decided to take the matching funds (Hillary and Obama have not), and he spent most of his money on Iowa and N.H. Now he has to be very frugal with every penny for the duration of the campaign season.

more info about matching funds

From Wikipedia:

In American politics the term matching funds refers to the money a presidential candidate is given by federal government to match the money they have raised personally. Candidates can expect up to $250 extra from public funds for each contribution from an individual they receive.

This usually only applies to the two main parties; as for third party candidates gaining the benefits of matching funds they must additionally have received 5% of the popular vote in the previous election. Hence the anomaly of Ross Perot standing as Reform Party candidate in 1992 and receiving 18% of the vote, yet receiving no matching funds because the Reform Party did not receive 5% of the vote in 1988; whilst Pat Buchanan, running as the Reform Party candidate in 2000, did receive matching funds despite winning only 0.4% of the vote.
