Weekend Watching: Aquaponics Gurus on the Alex Jones Show

Two of my close friends were in studio guests on the Alex Jones Show, guest hosted by Mike Adams today.

"On today's show, Mike talks with Troy Smith and Rob Nash in-studio. Smith is the owner of Brite Ideas in Austin, Texas, and Nash is the founder of AustinAquaponics.com. Mike's guests will talk about aquaponics, a sustainable food production system that combines a traditional aquaculture with hydroponics."

Troy's Interview:

Rob's Interview:

Being on the show was apparently so successful it crashed both their websites simultaneously and prompted calls from all over the nation. Mike came into the shop the other day and met Troy and they hit it off, which led to this show appearance.

Thank you Alex, Mike, and Michael Nystrom for bringing much needed exposure to this subject!

Thanks Jefferson. Thanks Fishy

Jefferson - I finally got a chance to watch the videos. Inspiring. Thanks for putting them up - I never would have seen them otherwise.

And Fishy - thanks for 'priming the pump' so to speak, on aquaponics. That has raised my awareness level tremendously. I can't wait to get my own system going.

Just saw that sharpsteve posted this:

I'm going to watch that next.

Thank you friends.

You're

welcome!
Is that your blog?
Thank you for the info on BTC's as well. I have taken a recent interest in them thanks to the info you and others have provided here.
If you're in central Texas, let's hook up sometime. I'm thinking I might have already met you during the Medina campaign at the garden shop.

Thanks

Steve!
I embedded it in the OP, and will forward it on to my buds.
Much appreciated.

Looks Impressive

Aquaponics looks pretty impressive. My wife's green thumb is decent, but mine is not so great.

Maybe I'll have better luck with a blue thumb. I like the idea of vegetables plus fish, and the kids would absolutely love having a big fish tank.

Very intriguing. I wonder how much maintenace is required.

"Welcome to my parlor" said the spider to the fly... lol!

Getting the system up and running is labor intensive, but not difficult. Having a well planned filtration method will minimize problems. Having your media be able to float into your filter will be a pain in your butt, for instance. I think the most important factor in how much work it is is the fish you choose. Tilapia are "gill feeders." They eat fish kibble, but they also filter algae for food, through their gills. That means they LIKE the water a bit funky, and that if you get behind and it gets really funky... well, to a point, they like it better.
You can get computers to automate everything once you are up and running, but it really only takes about 20 minutes a day at that point. You check your pH and total dissolved solids - how often depends on how near capacity you run your fish tank, but daily is a good minimum, and takes only seconds. Then it is about like gardening, check your grow beds for problems or stuff to harvest, feed the fish and go on. They have automatic fish feeders, too, but I like to feed them, check on their health.

Did you see the guy that used 3-inch gravel for his media? He said the roots work well and there is no clogging. I'll look for the video but wondering if you've tried that already...

Thanks, Flounder!

Yeah, we plan something similar

We have an unusual resource here - red lava rock that has been rolled down the river. We are going to see how much of it we can actually pick off a few gravel bars and try them. They are still nice and porous, but the outer edges are smoothed off.
We also have excellent clay on site, we may eventually try making our own "expanded clay."

More Propaganda from "Jeffferson"

Once again, "Jefferson" proves he's less interested in the success of the liberty movement and more interested in preaching the Gospel According to Jones.

This topic is productive and contains very useful information.

While you're running around here picking fights with people over Jones and trying to put a dividing line down the middle of the movement, Jefferson is being constructive and trying to help people in matters of preparedness with informative topics like this.

(Thank you, Jefferson, for this information.)

This guy is awesome! He will sell you a system, but he would prefer youbuild your own so you really understand how it works.... EXACTLY!

You

should see the explosion of interest that has happened at the store today. The websites crashed, the phone is ringing off the wall from people around the country, and the walk in business is insane. 5 new customers came in and bought books.

We're going to try and cultivate this relationship with Mike Adams. Troy says he's really got the bug. Hopefully we'll get a video of the interview from PPTV.com to post later.

I thought for sure

that FishyCulture would have posted this. Maybe she's an AJ hater and I didn't know ;)

I was into hydroponics and aquaponics before "fishy" was a guppy. She wasn't even an egg....lol
She's been a much more visible and better resource than I have been though. We trade notes occasionally. Don't think she's an AJ hater.

Fishy was a guppie?

That means we can start calling her "Flounder." ahhh hahaha.

Seriously, though: my wife and I are going to do this. It kinda sucks living in WA, where that band called "the Sun" doesn't like to tour, so we have to bring in lights to our setup.

I think we need a better understanding of taking care of tropical fish, though...

If you don't know your rights, you don't have any.

Fishy is somewhere between "guppy" and "large mouth bass"

I have not earned my "b" yet....
Let that sink in, it is funny. LOL!
You will want off grid artificial lighting, and a greenhouse. To be a serious seed saver, you don't want Monsatan pollinating your plants. And trust me, if you are not now, you are months from becoming one. (Seed saver.) It is part of a natural progression. Once you are in that deep, you might as well be prepared for volcanic dust clouds or geo0engineers gone wild. At the least, you will want to be able to artificially lengthen the days in the winter to trick your plants into thinking it is summer.

She was making fudge for a friend's birthday!

GEEZ!
LOL! I am not an AJ hater at all, I think he does a lot of good, it is not my job to judge his heart, but I have to limit my exposure to the people like AJ who are a little.... ummmm.... well, you know. I am looking for solutions, I get that we are in deep doo-doo.
But this, when I saw this title, I really thought "My work here is done." Not that this is my DPicide note, just that this is exactly why I have been been foaming at the mouth about AP - because we need people like AJ to use their "big voice" and offer SOLUTIONS. I take NO credit for this, but I absolutely believe that all of us who have been keeping it in the discussions here at the DP had an effect.
I just can't tell you how delighted I am to see this. Now, I might even start listening to AJ again. I would REALLY be bummed if I missed him taking up the cause of "Jubilee." Max and Stacey promote it these days, in their own way. The Occupy folks have a "rolling Jubilee" - AP is the "DIY Liberty Solution" and Jubilee is how all of us free all of us.

@

11 minutes it starts to show one of our displays in the warehouse. The video doesn't get the full effect but it's still something. The new LED lights are turning out to be very worthwhile.
They use less than half the energy of HID grow lights, last around 50,000 hours, and only uses mainly the red and blue spectrums the plants need. It makes for shorter internodes and much more flower/fruit sites. The plants also have this waxy shiny texture on the leaves that is an indicator of very healthy cell structure.

We plan to go that route

when we can. We are still stuck with a half finished rocket mass heater. We wanted the burn chamber on the ground (concrete pad) but we wanted the mass on flooring, so we have to finish the floor before we can finish the RMH, and helicopter Ben seems to keep missing my place... the wood under the fish tank is not where we want to cut corners!

That's

awesome Fishy. Your videos have been a real treat and almost make me feel like I'm there. Hopefully I can get some vids of our displays up on a youtube channel for the rest of DP to see. The Rocket Heater definitely has my curiosity peaked. Congrats!
