Montana Gov takes on REAL ID - the Revolution can help

Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer is a staunch opponent of the REAL ID scheme. He is now actively requesting assistance from the governors of other states that have either officially questioned or else refused to cooperate with the program.

This is a great opportunity for the Ron Paul Revolution to further prove its strength, and to strike a real blow for freedom and constitutional government as well. If you live in a state that has taken a stand against REAL ID, write or call the governor's office and urge the governor to support Schweitzer's effort. The friends of freedom need to rally against this affront to our liberties. Even if you don't live in such a state, consider writing to an anti-REAL ID governor anyway. Encourage him/her by letting them know that you wish your state gov officials had the guts to resist the feds, too, and let them know that you support them.

TN Governor Bredesen's reply

I sent an email to Tennessee Governor Bredesen this morning, asking him to stand firm with Montana Governor Schweitzer against the Real ID. This was his reply to me:

Dear Laura:

Thank you for your message about the federal REAL ID initiative. I
understand your concerns about this program, and appreciate hearing
from you

On January 11, 2008, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security released the final rules pertaining to the "REAL ID
Act of 2005," which Congress passed as part of the "Emergency
Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on
Terror, and Tsunami Relief Act" (P.L. 109-13).

This federal legislation created national standards for the issuance of
state driver's licenses and identification cards. The act also
established certain standards, procedures and requirements that must
be met if state-issued licenses and IDs are to be accepted as valid
identification by the federal government for such purposes as
boarding airplanes and entering U.S. government buildings. These
standards are likely to affect the state laws, regulations and business
practices governing the qualifications for and the production and
issuance of licenses and IDs in Tennessee and in every other state.
They also will require substantial investments by both the states and
the federal government to meet the objectives of the act.

In the coming weeks the Tennessee Department of Safety will be
conducting a detailed review of the final rules in order to fully evaluate
the impact REAL ID implementation will have on our citizens. During
this time, officials at the Department will examine options that will
enable our state government to provide services that balance
homeland security concerns with public safety practices as efficiently
as possible.

As decisions are made about Tennessee's response to the REAL ID
mandate, you can be assured that the safety and security of
Tennesseans will continue to be the top consideration. Your
comments are important and will receive serious consideration.
Warmest regards,
Phil Bredesen

In this letter he does not even mention SJR248 which he signed into law last June. SJR248 states that TN will not comply with the Real ID unless the Federal Government fully funds it. It sounds to me like TN is going to cave and cave quickly. The non-compliant states have 60 days from January 11, 2008 to ask DHS for an extension. If they request an extension it means they are going to comply. We need to keep track of which non-compliant states end up complying and which do not. If TN complies I will be moving to a non-compliant state, possibly Montana. I will not live in a compliant state. My biggest concern is that all of the non-compliant states will end up complying. If any of these governors say that they must comply because of pressure coming from their citizens, just let them know that those citizens can move to compliant states.

Does anyone know

of a site that lists the compliant/non-compliant states? Thank you.

Good job, countryboy.

I hope more will make the effort you're making to influence the process. This issue is vitally important to our future. REAL ID is another police-state foothold effort; it needs to be resoundingly defeated.

here's the next email I sent the governor 1/20/08

*******I also included the link to the actual letter written by the Governor of Montana if you want to read his actual letter asking 17 other Governors for their support and whatnot you may have to copy and paste that link in your browser if you can't just click on it.**********

Governor Crist,
In Regards to the REAL ID ACT, Please read the letter from another Governor written to 17 other Governors. I have already mentioned how many states are taking actions against the REAL ID in there states and I really don't understand why my state of Florida hasn't taken NO Actions. Do I need to remind you that our Founding Fathers intentionally as well as intelligently wrote the Congress to neutralize all the powers. As the Leader of Florida you can do something and I don't understand why you're going to leave it to the Senators to do something. If you truly have the best interests of the People you will act accordingly and I highly recommend reading the Constitution.

Anyways here's the pdf form of the letter from the Governor of Montana, a true Patriot:

http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/files/real_id_to_gov_ritter...

I plead to you to Please take action to show the Federal Government that YOU ran to become the Governor of Florida NOT the Federal Government They are taking the powers away from the states slowly but surely. This is another step of the Federal Government over stepping their boundaries. I Plead to you Please Take a Stand and do what's right.

Very Concerned Citizen,

Reply from Senator Mel Martinez on 1/16/08

(Note: I have yet to recieve a reply from Senator Nelson so all I know is it got thrown in the trash DELETED as for the Governor and Senator Martinez they replied in a timely fashion of within 3 days)

Below is a response to the recent comments I received from you:

Dear Mr. (edited out by Me):

Thank you for contacting me. I appreciate hearing from you regarding minimum standards for state drivers' licenses and personal identification cards and would like to respond to your concerns.

In the aftermath of the tragic terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, Congress has worked diligently to address the weaknesses in our nation’s ability to identify and react to intelligence information regarding potential terrorist threats. On December 17, 2004, the president signed into law S. 2845, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (P.L. 108-458). This bill was a critical first step in enhancing our intelligence infrastructure and capabilities as we continue fighting the global war on terror.

For example, in response to the rising problem of identification fraud, the Senate included in the Intelligence Reform bill various provisions to establish minimum national standards for drivers’ licenses and personal identification cards. These provisions require that each driver’s license or identification card include specific individual information, contain physical security features to prevent fraud, and have common machine-readable technology.

Since that time, both Congress and the Administration have looked at ways to continue to strengthen our borders and secure our families at home. On February 10, 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 418, the REAL ID Act of 2005, legislation that would tighten national standards for State driver’s licenses, make it more difficult for foreign nationals to claim asylum, and authorize the completion of a security fence along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Recently, I joined my colleagues to unanimously pass the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2005 for Defense, the Global War on Terrorism, and Tsunami Relief (H.R. 1268). The REAL ID Act was added as an amendment to H.R. 1268 by the House of Representatives and was included in the conference report passed by the Senate on May 10, 2005. While I agree that we need to look at ways to strengthen our borders, I do not believe that the Emergency Supplemental was the appropriate vehicle for that debate.

Our immigration policies need to show a balance between securing our borders and being open to individuals who come to this country seeking freedom and a better way of life. I am hopeful that in the future we will have a more comprehensive debate on immigration reform. However, it was imperative to get funding to our troops as quickly as possible, and I therefore voted with my colleagues to unanimously pass the Emergency Supplemental.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. If you have any additional questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me. In addition, for more information about issues and activities important to Florida, please sign up for my weekly newsletter at http://martinez.senate.gov.

My first email to Governor Crist sent 1/13/08

This is my first email to Governor asking him to take the appropriate actions and to join in with other states to follow Maine's lead, he did send me his answer from one of his many mouth pieces. I'll post the emails in order sent...Note I sent this to Senators Mel Martinez and Bill Nelson at the same time just switched names on it is all.

To Governor Crist:
I urge you to take Immediate actions in introducing Florida Legislation Opposing The Real ID Act of 2005 I urge you to follow Maine's example by passing Legislation opposing and NOT accepting the Real ID Act. If you do NOT act, in short you will be handing more state powers to the Federal Government which ultimately is against the US Constitution. 17 states have followed Maine's Lead in opposition to the unconstitutional Real ID Act are as followed: Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington State. The following 20 states have Legislation pending following Maine's Lead: Alaska, Arizona, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming. That is 38 states that either have or are in the process of taking action defending the Liberties and Freedoms of their citizens. Why has Florida not taken the same actions as the above listed states to Defend their citizens Rights, Freedom's, and Liberties? I urge you to follow Maine's Lead in passing Legislation to oppose the REAL ID ACT.
Sincerely, Florida citizen (My Full Name)

Yeah Way to Go Montana

I've already seen the letter as well as seen which 17 states he sent the letter to seeking support. I was mad because I didn't see Florida on the list so I took the obligation of forwarding to Governor Crist of Florida. Which actually even infuriated me more because a week before I discovered the letter I emailed Governnor Crist about the REAL ID and he played it off as if he has no power to do anything to contact the Senators and he supplied me their emails with his Reply.

No kidding I had already done that Crist, geez I'm gonna post is actual reply to my first email questioning what actions he taken to oppose the REAL ID and protect our Privacy and Liberties. Boy was I mad when I seen the Governor write a letter explaining what he did and also note Maine is the actual State that took the Lead to pass legislation in their state with quite a few following them afterwards and even more having pending Legislation. Damn Crist for Lieing to me and Damn me for voting for that decieving bastard who most thought was truly for the people Grrrrrrrrrrr
