No TV homes on the rise - Broadcasters worried

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Some people have had it with TV. They've had enough of the 100-plus channel universe. They don't like timing their lives around network show schedules. They're tired of $100-plus monthly bills.

A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don't even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. These people are watching shows and movies on the Internet, sometimes via cellphone connections.

Last month, the Nielsen Co. started labeling people in this group "Zero TV" households, because they fall outside the traditional definition of a TV home. There are 5 million of these residences in the U.S., up from 2 million in 2007.

Good for you !!

Good for you !!

that is so funny..

I just posted this same story... I just woke up, haven't had my coffee yet.

Please ignore my post. :)

Television has been out of my house since 07. FOX news and commercials are the reason why. Waste of money and time. Commercials keep insulting my intelligence.

I've been

satellite-free since 12/17/11. I watch Netflix, and the shows I want over the internet. I'm tired of the numbskull programming, and do not wish to support in any way the propaganda which has become our mainstream media.

I went cold turkey

for several years and now actually have Showtime now. One thing I noticed is now the disinfo and propaganda really jump out at me. I have begun to feel I am not being programmed as much, since I am consciously rejecting the crap.

but that does not mean no media viewing...they watch shows on the Internet and probably connect the laptop to a 70" LCD.

Same thing - just more economical for those who can have broadband.

I've been one of those for a few years now. Not sure why anyone would pay $100 a month for TV when you can watch any shows you might think are worth the effort online or through Netflix for $8 a month.

They Had Too Much Power In Their Day

Their nonsense is worse than a waste of time.

These are the media operators who supported the failed left/right paradigm that led to the destruction of America. How can they expect to get back the people who they deceived?

Never turning back!

I used to watch TV... all day.... errrrrrrr day.

When I first moved into my apartment, I had no televisions in my place. I pretty much went all of 2012 without TV. The first few months were hard, but I eventually got used to doing something else... like reading a book, or going outside, lol.

With Christmas having just passed, I have a TV now. No cable though. I hooked up my laptop via HDMI to the tv with a wireless keyboard/mouse set.

I watch Netflix and Youtube if I watch anything, and my laptop can double as a dvd player.

The hardest part of being sans tv was being without my Colorado Rockies games. I only ever miss a few games a year, and not having cable to watch them was tough. Recently though I found a website that streams all games FREE. (Sorry MLBTV, I almost subscribed to you) I feel like I am informed enough to have a "distraction" with my baseball games, lol. Let's just hope I don't get attacked by some malware...

I wish they have repeated

I wish they have repeated original article in 3 months. The way i understand there is an automatic decrease in TV watching audience during the summer months. People (such as students) would often move in the summer months and cancel their subscriptions then. AP article would tell us in 3 months that the growth was negative.

I have a sense that traditional MSM is becoming a less of the mainstream.

The reason I cut off the cable is because of the pushies messages telling what to think, what to vote, what to buy...

Will never go back and get that cable.

Dropped off my Cable Box

About a year ago, returned the cable box. Made sure to let them know the reason was because of the propaganda, and that it was disgusting. Nothing but lies on the news, couldn't watch it anymore...lol

It was encouraging to see others returning their boxes even if their reason was the cost or other television options.

Unfortunately, the television still receives many channels without a subscription, just by being hooked to the cable wire. Those channels all still display the major network "programming" and "news" broadcasts...even the local stations are horrible, can't watch them for more than a few minutes before seeing the manipulation and scripted BS.

And besides, with high speed internet, can pretty much watch whatever you want, whenever you want with far less, or no commercials at all. Can also be selective in what you watch and are not subjected to controlled, scripted, manipulated information...otherwise known as brainwashing.

I still have a TV

a large flat screen that is hooked to one of my computers. No cable, no satellite and definitely no broadcast TV. Everything that shows up on my big screen comes from the internet. Haven't had TV for 6 years now and don't miss it at all.

I'll probably be joining the club soon

I only watch about 4 shows. I try to catch John Stossel's program on occasion. But I end up paying about $150 a month... I used to ask for specials all the time and keep getting discounts but since Comcast paired with Verizon forget about it.

They want you to get the phone service and that's no discount because I'd pay exactly what I have now and I have zero use for a phone since I have a cell phone.

I'll probably be getting something like one of those roku things and just get netflix or something. Those of you who don't have cable should look at some of these internet tv box's like roku, apple tv, google tv has a couple of different box's, wd (western digital) tv, and there are a few others.

Personally, I'd think twice before recommending those boxes.

As I understand, they basically Consolidate all the Internet "channels" but you can't actually peruse the Internet with them. So in the end you've got a tv, a box, subscription to channels, and a remote control. Sounds like fertile ground for tptb to swoop in, buy up everything and do what they do best.

Just hdmi into it from your laptop/ipad or even VGA if your tv is older. Skip the boxes. It's the real Internet that matters.

first off

Wtf is tptb? Lol. Second It's a mere suggestion to look into the boxes. I'm just saying look into them, research them as an alternative. If you have netflix, or amazons movie services It's just another way to view it. Not everyone is going to be want to use a laptop connected to their tv to view movies and internet tv channels.

Really? You don't know? Tptb is googlable.

It's pretty clear what you were saying. And I was just offering an alternative to your alternative.

don't get the Logitech Google TV box

it's pure crap -the intel atom processor is way too weak to power it..

yea laptop or ipad is the way to use the big screen..

pitched my TV

in a dumpster in 2003. Never looked back. Best thing I have ever done. If I want to watch something, I watch it on the net. I loathe the mainstream commercial propaganda and the lies.

I was kinda surprised seeing this post...

... because my family has never had a TV... ever. Just something my parents never believed in even before we were Ron Paul supporters. Anyways, thanks for posting!

Surprised how?

That a lot of people have TVs? Or that the rates are now falling?

That there are more people getting rid of them

I'm becoming more anti-tv all

I'm becoming more anti-tv all the time. I find that it's just noise. I do watch actual MOVIES on Netflix but cable is almost useless. Except for local news and maybe some sports.

Setting up a TV with AppleTV and connected to a PC and a wireless remote and mouse might be the best bet going forward. You can watch most local news online, movies you can purchase directly without commercials, and yeah torrents of old stuff. With all the on-demand video we no longer have to be forced to listen to those dbags on CNN, MSNBC, FOX..

you don't need it at all

once you cut it out 100%, you'll start to find all kinds of time, your blood pressure will drop to normal, you'll sleep better at night and after a few months, your brain function will begin to settle down to normal.

AND you'll save lots of money.

if you're going to quit an addiction, TV's the one to lose first.

Internet Assault, The Beginning of the

This transition is bad. It's the beginning of the end of the Internet as it was and is -- regulated by the individual and free, producing cheap prices for all things Internet.

As this transition continues, buying and owning URLs and ability to design (because the complexity of the Internet will grow) will become expensive and specialized, specialized here meaning so intricate that the average person won't have time to learn to build and maintain websites, a trend I think that's been around for five to eight years. This trend plays right into: licence. Just watch.

What we're seeing here is the melding of television and the Internet. The Internet will be one giant television: saturated in commercialism with ever declining original, authentic, accurate and truthful/first-hand account/nonpropgandized information. All due to regulation from the companies that rule television and the governments they collude with.

How anyone can see this transition as anything good for the Internet escapes me and frustrates me.

Would I want to pay $100 a month for 800 + channels of crap?

I get all of my TV off the internet.

There are maybe 10 decent shows on at the most.

The rest, not so much.

The Time Warner illuminati all seeing eye will not get any more of my $$$.

I have a TV I just don't watch it.

In the last 2 months I've watched TV about 1 hour. I have free to air satellite.

There just isn't anything worth watching on the propaganda networks.

I have a TV and cable

but I would venture to say it is turned on no more than 10 hrs / month. I still have a weakness for (some) sporting events and love it when Ron Paul shows up on C-SPAN. I am reluctant to give it up entirely for the fear that one day, there might actually be something worth watching.
