McDonald's demands a bachelor's degree and two years' experience

http://www.9news.com/video/2275088254001/1/McDonalds-Cashier...

It used to be high school drop outs flipping burgers at McDonald's, now the fast-food joint is demanding a bachelors degree.

In a frightening example of how competitive the job market is for young people right now, a McDonald's outpost in Winchedon, Massachusetts, has just posted a call-out for a full time cashier - but insists only college graduates need apply.

And even they must have 1-2 years of cashier experience before they'll be trusted with the Big-Mac-selling responsibility, according to the advert.

McDonalds of Winchendon MA: "No. We placed an ad. There was an article written about it that was mistaken. That got reported on the television news...." Yes. They are hiring. No college required.

Could it possibly be a mistake?

Thinking about this for a minute, posting on a job bulletin board usually requires a hiring manager to select a bunch of options from radio/check buttons. In this one instance of about a million annual McDonald's job posting, the person may have checked 'degree required' by mistake instead of 'no degree required'.

I'm not sure we have a trendline here folks that reflects the entirety of today's economic reality.

Still a lot of marginal labor at my local McDonalds.

hmmm...

not seeing that in the Mick-D's around my town. Nope, not seeing that kind of employee base at all. In fact, one reason I will never eat at a fast food restaurant (besides the food being bad) is the caliber of the employee...no thank you.

Perhaps that's the hidden REAL reason for the article subject...getting a better caliber of employee.

That's right, Mark Twain! It's JUST a matter of time.

A McDouble issue

First - thanks to technology, outsourcing & globalization, and economic uncertainty - there are fewer job opportunities than people who need or want a job. If JOBS is what you're offering, it's a "seller's market."

Second, a high school degree no longer ensures that you have basic literacy/ communication and math/problem-solving skills.

It's not looking good out there!

Wake up from the veil of polarization

Throughout most of Europe, there are McDonald's everywhere. McDonalds is forced to pay health insurance benefits, social security benefits, welfare benefits, a high minimum wage, even for PART-TIME employees. Guess what... I went to a mall in Lisbon and of all the places to eat, literally dozens, which one had the 20 minute line, cause everyone wanted a burger. MCDONALDS. Now, lets get this straight. The employees at the Lisboa McDonalds were not SPECIAL in the sense that they had any high school or equivalent degree. In fact, most of them looked too young to have graduated high school. But they're getting paid nearly TWICE THE WAGE they get paid here in DOLLARS. Now, was my cheeseburger, $20 in Euros??? NO! It was THE SAME PRICE as in the United States.

The GREED of these corporations cannot be understated. If they are looking for a college graduate to run their cash register, they are only trying to undermine the value of the degree. Minimum salary should be $60,000 a year with full health/severance/and life insurance benefits. Otherwise GET OUT OF TOWN. Literally. All over the world... like my story in Lisbon.. in EVERY COUNTRY, there is a McDonalds. And people are lining up like hotcakes for it. The menu is almost always the same.

McDonalds is a grease fat producing craphole, and recently, at least here in New York, they started charging $7 for their main meals. I mean, I could go buy a box of bubba burgers, a pound of American cheese, some hamburger rolls, and cook 12 cheeseburgers that taste 10x better than this crap. I could buy my own freeze dried fries and make BETTER fries. McDonalds just sucks. Need I mention the health code is more strict in these European countries and they are paying higher taxes per employee.

This company is just awful, plain and simple. Really, liberal or conservative, up or down, watch Supersize Me. It is a must watch. I've said my peace.

That's because McDonald's got out of OBAMACARE---

...and not they know a lot of people will be clamoring to get a job there, just so they can get OUT of Obaaaamacare.

unfortunately

A high school diploma is no longer sufficient evidence that you have mastered addition.

I read a (print) article just today where a WA factory was having trouble finding qualified applicants who could pass a basic math exam (calculators allowed) despite the fact that a high school diploma was required for consideration. In fact 9 out of 10 applicants failed.

Then it went on to say we need to reevaluate how we are teaching math to make it more interesting.

Thank you dept. of education for all you have accomplished in such a short time

you said it.

Had to laugh at this. Mcdonalds serves disgusting food that is bad for you. Always has horrible service and to top it off, they don't serve you clean water. Which means the soda too.

Simple subtraction,

went into a gas station with a twenty dollar bill.
Asked for two packs of smokes and asked to put the rest of the twenty on pump number four. Went to the pump and put the gas in (not that much may I add) well it was $1.20 short. So I went back in. Informed the attendant that I was shorted and told him the amount. He said okay just hang up the nozzle and then do it again. So I did. The amount this time was $3.80 more than what I was shorted. I was ticked and all I had at the time was that twenty so I left.
Mickey D's has probably had this done a gadzillion times by these over educated num-nuts!

Frankly, this development

Frankly, this development speaks louder about the failure of the governmental license to work ( aka diploma) than a stricter standard at McDonald's restaurants. Obviously, McDonald's requirement indicates that many prospective employees can't even count. Maybe, McDonald's restaurants can order toiler paper printed with diplomas on the sheets of paper.

Fat doesn't make you fat

McDonald's is often an easy target, but fat doesn't make you fat - sugar makes you fat. Spend some time here www.marksdailyapple.com - just don't buy into his nonsense about evolution.

And for those that bought into Morgan Spurlock's baloney, watch Tom Naughton's film Fat Head. He refuted the crap in Super Size Me, and after a month of eating only fast food (primarily McDonald's), he lost 12 pounds.

Thumbs up

for MarksDailyApple...great site to learn about nutrition. I think it's funny when people won't eat red meat, but they'll stuff whole wheat bagels down their throat, thinking its healthy. The war on fat is ludicrous.

doesn't sound like he refuted anything

He would have had to do that same thing as the guy in supersize me (and be the same size to start with) which as you state he didn't. Please consider that a super-sized meal at mcD's includes a super sized pop...which is all sugar and super sized fries which they cover in glucose! Super-sized meals are just too large for the average person or any person probably...too much sugar and too much (bad) fat and too many calories and just overwhelming to the system. Sure, if you eat sensibly you could eat there and lose weight....especially if you are already overweight.

Fat doesn't make you fat, but

Fat doesn't make you fat, but there are good and bad kinds of fat. McDonalds food typically has the bad kind.

Great stuff, MT. Thought-provoking and comprehensive? I'm going.

Hey, how do you do the text wrap around the images, MT?

Try HTML tag: img align=left

Right click & select 'view page source' to show you how an HTML page is marked. Bit cryptic, but search for what interests you.

See syntax for HTML IMG (example: <img align=left height=340 src="img.jpg">). Most any DailyPaul member knows more about computers than I do. Please do not even divulge the fact that I own a machine. I have entirely stopped using the Type-Writer, for the reason that I never could write a letter with it to anybody without receiving a request by return mail that I would not only describe the machine but state what progress I had made in the use of it, etc., etc. I don't like to write letters, and so I don't want people to know that I own this curiosity-breeding little joker.
