Playing With Words - Republic, Democracy

So I'm reading my Dictionary of Problem Words and Expressions (yes, I read dictionaries for fun - hooda thunkit?) and I come to the entry for republic, democracy. Accurate historical definitions of both words are given, along with examples of usage. Then comes the fun part:

'Depending upon their party, candidates have been known to say "Vote the Democratic ticket because this country is a democracy" and "Vote the Republican ticket because this country is a republic."

"Recommendation: don't vote for either candidate; both are playing with words."

Ha!

So now I can honestly say that it isn't just my opinion that politics is a racket. I read it in a dictionary.

Pledge of Allegiance

When in doubt, just say it to yourself:

"...And to the Republic for which it stands..."

I am on record to say the USA

I am on record to say the USA is a Republic. If there is some subtle difference as to what D's and R's think about this issue, let's take it to court and straiten this whole issue out once and for all.

Sue the Democrats to come to the table to settle this issue in court.

The winner gets to call the USA what it is.

Bump. I know your cool, but reading a dictionary is awesome.

My father-in-law used to learn a new word every night before sleep, etc. He was an awesome man.

This is a map of the wheel-ruts of modern English. Etymologies are not definitions; they're explanations of what our words meant and how they sounded 600 or 2,000 years ago.

My favorite so far:

Free includes debt-free!

Every time I catch myself about to use a word...

and I'm not clear on what it actually means, I look it up online and end up getting lost for a while reading about its history.

A great book on language is Word Play by Peter Farb:

Ok Chris, you got me

You really like this book, don't you?

I just ordered it, used from Amazon. 4 bucks, including shipping. You're a prolific reader.

All art is only done by the individual. The individual is all you ever have, and all schools only serve to classify their members as failures. E.H.

It's a really really good book.

This book is really, really, what's the word? Good.

You'll love it :)

As a birthday gift,

My wife and I gave her brother the honor of naming our new twins, a boy and a girl.

He said he wanted to name the the baby girl Denise, and we thought that was fine.

And he proposed to name the boy Denephew . . .

And while I'm on d'subject,

The problem with the philosophical proposition "I think, therefore I am," is that it puts Descartes before de horse. (And that's a valid criticism, as well as a humorous one; existence precedes thought.)
