Is it possible to be an Atheist and a Patriot?

Is it possible to be an Atheist and a Patriot?

Our founders didn't think so, judging from the numerous quotes from them that it doesn't work.

My thoughts is, that the despite has gone on too long, and the end is near, and I know in God's kingdom, an atheist will not be found. I'm not here to prop up a government with infidels, but herald in the
return of Jesus Christ and His Kingdom.

What do you think? Will God forever tolerate the despite of His own people, whose salvation was bought with the precious blood of the Lamb? Is 2,000 years being patient enough? Is America going from a Christian nation to what it is now a sign of the end of the world, and the reign of Jesus Christ, who alone is King of Kings and Lord of Lords?

Quotes from the founders for and against appreciated. But as for me, I pray for the end. God bless whom he will bless. But God does not bless non-Christian nations.

"Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end,"
Isaiah 9:7

5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. 6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
Psalm 37:5-6

Webster's 1828...

1828 was rather close to the Founding of the US so the 1828 Webster's dictionary is very apropos:

patriot - A person who loves his country, and zealously supports and defends it and its interests.

Why would atheists be incapable of loving and zealously supporting their country?

I am more puzzled how a christian can be patriotic towards the US with all the murdering and stealing for plunder we have been engaging in for so long. :\

~wobbles but doesn't fall down~

Yes.

The question is rather: Can you be a Christian and be a patriot? Being for God and Liberty is all well and good, but what if you must choose one or the other? As an atheist I would like to think a Christian would choose liberty first but I must always consider the other possibility.

For an atheist patriot no such conflict can occur.

This is by no means an attempt to exclude theists from the movement. Merely to point out the absurdity of thinking we need to divide ourselves on such lines. Anarchist vs minarchist. Theist vs Atheist. Just stop it ffs.

I have yet to figure out

where the Christian-Patriot connection comes from. The two are incompatible - as Christians we know that this world is not our home - we are sojourners. We are admonished to be good citizens, mind our own business, and share the Truth of the Gospel.

Our real home is heaven - eternity awaits.

The law cannot make a wicked person virtuous…God’s grace alone can accomplish such a thing.

Yes

Yes it is possible to be an atheist and a Patriot. There. Question answered.

Is it possible to be a Christian and a Patriot?

Thomas pain describes Patriots as those who Protect their Country from their Gov't. Seems to me the RNC and DNC is full of 'Christians' who do a lot of Protecting the Gov't from their Country.

I grew up disliking Christianity (not Christians per se) because I was taunted by children and adults about my recently deceased brother going to Hell because my family were not Christians. Adults and peers were quite nasty about the whole thing. I grew up Unitarian which described a Loving God and we greatly revered Christ, not because He was the ticket to Heaven, but rather His Teachings were. More importantly, His teachings were the ticket to a great Life, not a great Death.

It is difficult to find Christians today who practice what He preached. Instead most seem to focus on their Divine Right to heaven because they 'gave' themselves to Christ. To Hell with the rest of us no matter our contributions and generosity towards others.

What I find most odd about many Christians, including the author of this post, is that they are very eager to claim their reward in Death by just giving up on what God created for us. Instead of practicing the Teachings of Christ and bringing about a culture that Christ would be proud of, they Pray for The End and invite the Savior of their Souls to come destroy what they could do little with.

God surely must be impressed with those who so easily ask for Forgiveness, and have to do so often because they can't seem to stop the Behavior that require Forgiving.

If everyone followed a Libertarian Philosophy (i.e. Christ's Teachings almost to the letter) then Christ could return to a Peaceful world worthy of His presence.

BRING IT! Christians to the left, atheists to the right. FIRE!!!

Can patriots stop looking for reasons to attempt to make themselves a "movement" of hermits?
I am going to say the "correct" answer to your question is "No. Atheists cannot be Patriots" because I once helped pay to host a "liberty event" and one of the Christians who wanted to speak in the hall I rented told me that only Christians can be patriots. For the record, I would have been well within my "rights" to escort him out of the hall, but I was there about "liberty" and rather than stop him from speaking I stepped out for a cigarette. So carry on, Christian soldier! I'm just going to hang out in my community and grow some fish and feed the "sheep" best I can. Oh, and try to get people in the "liberty movement" to start seeking common ground as a top priority.
So, I have a question for you.
Can Christians ever embrace religious freedom?

This is the article that got my posting privileges revoked:

legitimate question, should be answered.

It is possible for an atheist today to be a patriot, one that would not understand his philosophical foundation , but highly unlikely, why you might say? Well an atheist philosophical world view would be Darwinian philosophical social evolutionary theory, when applied to the real world it translated to communism, national socialism, fascism. The foundation for all secular endeavors is Darwinian. The natural evolutionary tendency for political systems is socialism, (note: Communist call themselves socialist, today's revival of communism in the West is relabeled as "Communitarianism". Whereas this nation was founded on the idea that there is a creator in which we are accountable to, and this creator has certain moral order as real as laws of nature. They believed that man in essence is corrupted by the fall in the Garden of Eden, that is why they established checks and balances in government that very much are ignored today. They believed man's natural tendency is towards power, power corrupts man, this is why government must be held in check.

As a Christian myself

My answer to your questions is: Absolutely yes, an atheist can be a patriot. No question about it in my mind.

Do atheists love freedom? Do atheists love their family and friends? Do atheists want to keep what they earn? Just because they don't believe in God in no way affects their ability to love or fight for the things mentioned above and therefore be a patriot.

If you truly embrace freedom than you must embrace others that differ from your opinion.

You cannot KNOW that an atheist will not be found in heaven. Does judge not less ye be judged ring a bell?

Christ died for man's sin, all sins, so what makes you think that the turning away from God is not also a sin one can be forgiven for when they stand for judgement.

People, it is time to unite and focus on that which unites us and not that which divides us.

Is it possible to be a theist and a jerk?

I mean... as long as you're collecting stupid questions.

Sure, why not.

I want to be known as a libertarian

The meaning of "patriot" is all mixed up with whether the country is worth saving or not. The real question is, do you believe in the personal sovereignty of Man, starting with yourself? To believe that religion is the only path to morality is HUGE mistake. In a secular free society, the religious are not going to impose their morality upon unbelievers, but find ways to tolerate, coexist, trade and live peacefully with them. Likewise, secular institutions must leave the religious and its practitioners alone, other than those abusing unwilling children.

In spite of perhaps doing the Lord's work in a strange way, I am an atheist who is extremely tolerant of religion, and supportive of its good points, which there are many. Good religious people take what is good in their faith and make it work helping people. Evil (and careless) people take what is confusing and non-logical about religion and use it to deceive, defraud, abuse and take advantage of people who expect moral and ethical goodness to come of the relationship. This happens in virtually all religions everywhere, continuously.

Religion is basically belief in the unbelievable, or in that which there is scant evidence. A human is "given" a marvelous brain and the powers of thought, then expected to suspend its proper operation in order to apprehend a greater truth. Hmm... please excuse we who have a problem with that paradigm.

It never bothered me that Ron Paul was religious, metaphysical opinions are personal. But it limited my relationship (much more importantly, that of many other very capable secular libertarians) with his organizations, and was perhaps the weakest aspect of his operations all these years.

Non-religious people are not necessarily smarter, but they do lack certain debilitating mental traits like avoidance and denial of contrary evidence (the fossil record, ancient megaliths defying mainstream history), substituting faith for logical analysis. And they often practice critical mental habits like those taught by Ayn Rand, Abraham Maslow, Julian Snyder, etc., like checking one's premises, looking beyond simplistic and supernatural explanations, avoiding logical fallacies and honest introspection.

Anarchist atheists are the smartest, nicest and most interesting people I have ever associated with, especially the females. Not a single one of them believes that violence is an answer to anything except self-defense.

Of course atheists can be patriots

Anyone who is honest in heart, and who strives to protect liberty for all, while also advocating personal responsibility, who is loyal to the Constitution of the United States, can and is a patriot.

Look up

The etymology of the words patriotism and nation.

Luke 3:38
Isaiah 43:3-5

By Patriot do you mean

someone who blindly follows a belief based on some arbitrary lines on a map drawn up by some arbitrary ellitist thugs?

Being a patriot means using force on others based on some piece of paper that a bunch of people scribbled on hundreds of years ago.

Watch "I'm allowed to rob you video" on LarkenRose.com, and you'll get the point. If you don't get the point then you are out of your mind, and it doesn't matter what you call yourself.

Silence Viper..!

If you silence the Christians, even the stones would cry out.

I see far more unbelievers spreading God's message of Liberty today, than i do Christians.

How many people recently, as public leaders, stood up and said they can't take our guns away? and how many pastors? There's my point.

NOTE TO MODERATOR:

Perhaps threads like these should be 403'd by the moderator, just like some recent ones on illegal immigration--which are accused of / labeled as being "race-baiting"--because these are like "spiritual belief-baiting".

Thoughts?

I mean, if we're going to censor free speech here in the interest of political correctness, let's go all out. Right?

Consistency?

Isn't it grand Michael?

Sometimes I think it is almost....well.... liberating.

An atheist patriot does not exist. It is a Myth.

There is no such thing. Might as well believe in the tooth fairy! No one has ever seen an atheist patriot. Made up by delusional men as a crutch.

I see one every time I look

I see one every time I look into the mirror.

Atheists are the best

Atheists are the best patriots.

read your bible

Matthew 25:34-45

Just Maybe

Just maybe if you are an atheist you will wake up after you die. Who cares? If you need acceptance to believe in what you believe, try a little harder to believe what you believe. Has nothing to do with being a Patriot, just be who you are and don't hurt anyone.

Yes, of course...

...it is possible, just as it is possible for a theist to be a tyrant.

jrd3820's picture

Why, yes it is

It is possible to be an atheist and a patriot, and I have some more great news to share with you. It is also possible to be a Christian and be a patriot, isn't that great to hear?

And why stop there? It is possible to be Jewish and a patriot, it is possible to be a Buddhist patriot. There are female patriots and male patriots. There are old patriots, and young patriots, and even middle aged patriots.

Oh, don't worry it gets even better; one can be Asian and be a patriot and one can be Middle Eastern and be a patriot. It is also possible to be a Native American patriot and an African American patriot.

Anything is possible.

Have a great evening sir :)

Why that is the best news I've heard tonight!
