Rand Paul (Fishing For Votes) Calls Lincoln "The Great Emancipator"

Boy did Rand do a disservice to African-Americans in his speech with the following line:

How did the Republican Party, the party of the great Emancipator, lose the trust and faith of an entire race?
The "Great Emancipator" that he's referring to is Abraham Lincoln.

The Abraham Lincoln who said the following in a famous debate with Stephan Douglas:

I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.

Yeah...that Lincoln.

So you think he should have discredited Lincoln....

in order to convince blacks that they should support Republicans?

This is called knowing your audience. Unless you missed the public school history lesson, Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents ever and the first Republican. Also, generally speaking, most people including blacks love Lincoln. It's also the name of the largest Republican shindig held in every county in the country.

Rand is not so much a teacher (like his father) as he is a political force to be reckoned with. Did you see Rachel Maddow get upset over this statement? That's kinda the point.

Perception is reality my friend. This is chess not checkers. The point is to position yourself in the favor of your target audience.

This speech was for establishment Republican voters, not you.

That's a devastating quote though.

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

The Accepted History of Lincoln's Era

Is a battle best left for another time and place. A politician wouldn't get anywhere going completely against the grain on every single issue.

Liberty, Freedom and stopping the oncoming of tyranny is at stake here, we can work to straighten out history books later....or not at all if we don't turn things around working within the existing system and sociological climate.
