-- This book is just out and is first rate! Its amazing how DARK the Dark Ages where, and I can see now why we call it the "Enlightenment Period" and the "Age of Reason". This book will blow your mind as it shows you how key ideas of liberty grew & spread among various long forgotten thinkers. I have a renewed respect for Herbert Spencer, the father of sociology.

"The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined"
...by Dr. Steven Pinker.

Buy it here: http://www.amazon.com/Better-Angels-Our-Nature-Violence/dp/0...

Here is a random excerpt from Dr Pinker's book--

"Also, cultures that are classified as more individualistic, where people feel they are individuals with the right to pursue their own goals, have relatively less domestic violence against women than the cultures classified as collectivist, where people feel they are part of a community whose interests take precedence over their own. These correlations don't prove causation, but they are consistent with the suggestion that the decline of violence against women in the West has been pushed along by a humanist mindset that elevates the rights of individual people over the traditions of the community, and that increasingly embraces the vantage point of women....... I think it is extremely likely that in the coming decades the violence against women will decrease throughout the world." -- page 414

...This book is a mind changer for sure. Prior to reading this book, I would have never known or appreciated the fact that we are in a LONG PEACE, the longest on record, nor would I have understood the reasons why this is happening (I think the facts presented in this book point to libertarian ideas having a bigger effect than I ever thought)

My favorite liberty book is

Hayeks Road to Serfdom. Such a great read, a little fuzzy for someone who doesn't read often. It took me a full year to finish it for my first time.

If you think Hayek is good...wait until you read George Smith's

book. Wow! Its like 10 chapters, all short chapters that trace key ideas from great historical thinkers. After reading that, you'll see Hayek in a whole new way.

Everyone deserves a good history book... get it today.

Haven't read either one

I'll have to see if they're available at the library. That second book looks especially good to me, what with the collectivist argument of "public good" taking priority over individual good and all.

"Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice." -- Thomas Paine

Bump

Selfish bump... HAS anyone else read these books besides me?

Please speak up...or ask a question or two.
