The Agro Rebel: Austrian Farmer Defies the State, Plants Fruit Trees, Uses Pigs & Peas to Plow Vegetable Fields

A big special thanks to Hawkiye for bringing this video to my attention.

This Austrian farmer and forester practices "permaculture," a different kind of farming on his mountain property. With this certain form of organic-agriculture, he is very convincing and successful. Contrary to all conventional rules and despite annual average temperatures of 4.5°C and an altitude of between 900m-1400m, he cultivates cherries, apples, mushrooms, kiwis, lemons, pumpkins, potatoes and zucchinis.

This man is a living example of defiance, determination, dexterity, and definiteness of purpose. He leads by example, and proves how to change a community without the use of force.

He is the Agro Rebel.

The pig farming technique is explained at 39:00, but the entire documentary is amazing!

There is a post from 2008 on the DP about this man.

youtube. I won't repost until I've watched it. Don't want the video to get pulled too soon. :)

Thanks for the heads up.

Small-Scale, Integrative Farming and Gardening

Thanks oceanoz. I just love Holzer. I'm so sorry for the grief I've learned that he's taken from the government. I mean, we wouldn't want to zone for human, animal, and plant HEALTH and landscape BEAUTY, would we?!

I'm going to add a link for his most recent title so it's put on the DP bookshelf.

Re review of Sepp Holzer's book

On the post about Mexico banning GMO corn, I noticed a comment with an embedded video of Mark Shepard on "Restorative Agriculture." I'm familiar with biodyamics, also restorative, and so I checked it out. Five minutes in, I was hooked. It's heartening to know how the idea has caught on. I've been focused on Sepp Holzer. His farm is simply amazing. Some video I watched yesterday answered a question I've had: how many people does it take to work that farm? Two. Him and his wife. (!)

I've just finished reading the review of Chapter 1 and will listen to the podcasts for the rest. Browsing the site, I'm sure I won't stop there! Thanks.

"As long as one can make money out of catastrophes,

those catastrophes won't end." That's agriculture visionary Sepp Holtzer's comment viewing the decimated Alpine hill (subsidized by the gov't) across the valley from his own: fertile, biologically-diverse, and thriving beautifully. I agree with the comment below, this *is* the way of the future. It's heartbreaking to know he's been given such GRIEF by the government.

The embedded video has been pulled. Here is a preview of a documentary about Sepp. Also info on purchase, containing three films: "Farming with Nature", "Aquaculture" and "Terraces and Raised Beds." Below is a short film. Use cc for English subtitles.

P.S. Sepp rightly said that this needs to be taught in universities. I checked Cornell's School of Agriculture, and while I think the principles of Restorative Agriculture/Permaculture/Agroforestry/ Natural Farming should be taught as part of a required 101 course, at least I'm happy to see it's acknowledged - if w/a two-credit course (Permaculture Design Certification), also online course. http://www.sustainablecampus.cornell.edu/initiatives/permacu...
Well, possibly some of it's there also within ecology courses. I didn't see anything similar at SUNY - College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

The reality is that even on

The reality is that even on private land the Alphabet agencies are cracking down hard on anyone who would try to do anything of any real scale using water. The wetands legislation enforced by the Army Corp and the EPA would kill and prosecute anyone in the US trying to do this in plain site. You might get away with it if they don't catch you actually doing it. It is part of the culture of control by the government and the loss of stewardship of their own lands of farming families some of which I know have been farming their lands since before the revolutionary war. It is only one front these brave farmers fight in our country as they are attacked from all sides of their business lives to become little more then tenant farmers on their own land. It is the saddest thing you will ever see. The loss of control of the land and the real wealth derived from it from family farming hands is a national tragedy.

“Any man who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the government take care of him better take a closer look at the American Indian.” ― Henry Ford.

Sepp is a real visionary for

Sepp is a real visionary for the future of agriculture that has done what he teaches not just talk about it. There have been several posts on hims including one I did a few months ago...

This is the future of agriculture if the current detrimental system doesn't destroy the eco system first.

Yes, heaven on earth

I've just recently learned about Sepp. He's my new hero. :) His farm is so beautiful. His farming practices make so much sense. How sad, to see how the government is treating the land on "the other side of the mountain." Yes, this is the future of agriculture if the current system doesn't destroy the environment first *OR* if the U.N. doesn't put a halt to it. This idea of self-sufficiency and supplying one's town with fresh, locally-grown organic produce and meats *is* antithetical to the global agenda that has us buying garlic from China, pineapple from Indonesia, and tomatoes from Mexico. People like Seth are a threat to supporters of Agenda 21, a whole giant program that PRETENDS to have the environment as its priority.

Anyway, you might already be aware of these videos (replacement links for those pulled), as well as this fun interview I came across where Sepp talks about how it all began, when he was a child: http://www.dailypaul.com/72517/global-gardener-video-library...

No biggie I am just glad more

No biggie I am just glad more people are becoming aware if Sepp and what he has done and is doing. He has several books now too and he just did a week long teaching seminar in Montana that I wished I had been able to go to... First they persecuted him for going against the grain now they come to him for advice and he is in demand around the world to consult on projects...

*satire

I speak austrian, and the translation on this is wrong. This is what he is saying:

"damn it's cold here"
"I'm freezing"
"This is frozen waste land"

Thanks for the heads up!

I'll update the OP, and instruct everyone else that there's nothing to see here and to keep moving!

Sepp Holzer is all that

"They almost worship me."

His neighbor has also started planting like Sepp. She harvested ridicule, but also a lot of vegetables.
