Constitution trumps polling

Our president says that 90 percent of American voters want a greater background check on people buying or selling guns. His conclusion then is if the majority feels this way, then a law should be passed.

If that is how we are to make government decisions, then with 49 percent opposed to Obamacare and 47 percent in favor with the remainder undecided, he should be the first to suggest repeal. I realize there are various polls to quote. One interesting poll stated that only 4 percent of Americans think gun control is the most important problem.

Regardless, laws must agree with our Constitution, and whether the majority is for or against something is not the grounds to pass a law that in part or whole is not supported by the Constitution.
