Look what I found today: extra long earthworm! Is this normal in your neck of the woods?

I was helping my dad dig a trench this morning and I thought I dug up a snake. This is an earthworm! They say things are bigger in Texas, but a huge earthworm here is usually around 8 inches. Has anyone ever seen one this big? I never have.

I didn't measure it, but to give you an idea on how long this thing is, the jeans I'm wearing are a 36" inseam.

EARTHWORM!

not red wiggler

red wigglers are the small composting worms that are all the rage now in wormbins, and vermicomposting

they stay near the top of the soil to feed on decaying matter,,,, not much for digging down,,,, as i suspect this guy would

I didn't notice a smell, or whiskers.

My shovel damaged one end a little bit. I put him back under the dirt with an apple core to munch on.

Worm aethetics

He would probably enjoy the apple more if you ate it first.

Wow, where I can I get some

Wow, where I can I get some of those for my yard? My chickens would love them!

Uh, no definitely not

normal around here (Georgia). The biggest worm I've ever come across falls around your 8" range (and that one freaked me out). That thing is crazy..I guess everything is bigger in Texas! :-)

You might want to call a college or something and have it identified, maybe you made a discovery and they'll name it after you. :-)

I looked around on the web and came across these sightings of big worms in the US:

"United States: The Oregon Worm grows two to three feet long, and it gives off the smell of lilies when handled. It burrows five feet deep and is rarely seen. In fact, there have been no official sightings since the 1980s.

The Giant Palouse was found in Washington State. It grows up to two feet long - about the length of a baseball bat. It hasn't been spotted since 1978. Population growth and development may be to blame."
