Necessary Skills: Trauma/Tactical Medicine for CCW

** Because, in one's lifetime, one will always need to deploy life-saving skills more times, than life-taking skills. Well, hopefully, anyway, given the option.

Trauma Medicine for the CCW Operator with Keith Seto

Posted by Chris Upchurch on 04/26/2013

Recently I attended the Trauma Care for the CCW Operator in Las Vegas, Nevada, taught by Dr. Keith Seto and Roger Phillips. This is the fourth time I’ve attended the TMCO class, but it's the first with any instructor other than Dr. John Meade, our Director of Tactical Medicine.

For the force on force portion of the class, I brought a pair of airsoft G17s. However, the only use I got out of them was loaning them out to various students when their airsoft guns went down. Most students brought Umarex airsoft pistols, with a few green gas powered airsoft guns.

On the live fire side of things I brought my usual pair of G17s, one a TSD gun, the other iron sighted. These didn’t get any use at all. Interestingly, the entire class (and all the instructors) brought Glock pistols. Close to half of them were TSD guns. This is not entirely unexpected. Many of them are Roger’s regular students and I suspect that he has influenced their choices somewhat.

Trauma Medicine for CCW

This revolutionary class is directed toward the "Average Joe" who may have never even taken a first aid class and certainly doesn't consider himself to be a medically trained special operator. Instead, he is someone who realizes that, just as with his shooting skills, he needs to have skill to help save someone's life, perhaps his own, in the aftermath of shooting or other traumatic events. We call that man the "CCW Operator". He doesn't have a trained medic nearby. He must show the same self-reliance that got him through the initial incident.

This will be a very thorough introduction to how to evaluate and treat gunshot wounds, stab wounds and other traumatic injuries. We will do a great deal of technical work to ingrain the correct skills and then work them extensively via practical training, including force on force exercises and live fire. There has never before been training and information like this offered to the general public.
