Nervous about so many 403: Access Denied

What does the word "moderate" mean, anyway? Dumb down? Silence the unpopular?

This site allows bashing of Republicans, bashing of Democrats, bashing of Rand Paul, even bashing of Ron Paul.

What are these many 403: Access Denied posts about that they are being banished? What target is above being bashed on the Daily Paul? One of them I noted was titled rather innocuously as "I've lost faith in Alex Jones". Does Alex Jones own the DP, did he personally "403" that post?

Why is the downvote mechanism not sufficient to let the DP community democratically moderate the boards?

Its all good.

If if gets out of hand the NSA will step in and check us all.

You'll also get that sometimes when you open separate tabs, log

in on one tab, then go to another tab that hasn't been refreshed, and hit the "reply" link. It will give you a 403 error. Does for me every time I follow that sequence.

*steps forward*

I am the guilty one sir.

I tuned into the DP yesterday to see 3 threads titled (paraphrasing here)
"I've lost faith in Alex Jones and this site"
"I just don't give a $hit anymore"
"I've had it with this place"

You know, if I get a snoot full of this place or the world of politics or news in general, I have to remind myself to step back and focus on other things. I don't make a big dramatic exit and create some blubbering suicide note about how so and so's offended me. I just quietly step away, and come back when I'm feeling better or my curiosity overcomes my common sense.

When I saw those 3 titles stacked on top of each other in the top slot of the most viewed posts, I felt it was a cluster of unnecessary negativity and dropped the hammer on them. I know the one by "bigsurjun" (sp) was lengthy and probably genuine, but it's the same old sentiment I've seen and read here a hundred times.

There are the typical grenades that get tossed in the tent here at the DP, be it intentional or unintentional.

The truthers are idiots and are hurting our movement.
The Atheists are " " " " " "
The Alex Jones disciples " " " " "
The Christians are
The Anarchists are
What has happened to the DP
I've had it the trolls win
etc. etc.

I'm all for subjects that stimulate lively debate. I'm not for the typical grenades that don't go anywhere except turning into a flame war. Some inquiries may be sincere, some may be just drunken rants, and some are purposefully made to whack the hornet's nest.

Was I maybe a little heavy handed yesterday? Probably.

That was the first time I've done such a thing. I've been entrusted to help maintain some sense of order around here. It's not a job I asked for, it's one that just kind of developed as the owner and I got to know each other better over the last couple of years. I felt that with all of the things the host has recently been through (Martial law in his backyard) that coming home to see his house in disarray with people acting like monkeys flinging feces at each other was the last thing he needed to see.

I don't want to stifle debate or inhibit learning. I have LONG been an advocate for the variety of topics on the DP. I might even be more open to certain subjects than other moderators IDK. But sometimes enough is enough.

Now, the homeowner/party host is going on a much deserved, well needed vacation. I don't want to have to watch this place like a hawk as I have a life outside of here, and I don't want the owner to give worrying about this place a second thought when he is away either. I want him to know that it is in good hands.

That's going to require cooperation from EVERYONE here. We're all adults (and mostly intelligent at that) not a bunch of junior high school kids.

So, the blame for those 3 threads being 403'd rests squarely on MY shoulders, no one elses. I take full responsibility. If you want to be mad at me, then that's fine. Understand that I am human as well, and have my moments. I am not always "moderate" and have made that clear from the beginning. I believe a "moderator" should be like a boxing referee who seldom intervenes. That doesn't mean we have to be boxing all the time though.

I have taken the time out of my day to explain why I did what I did. I'm not going to, nor do I have the time to explain any further. Please do me a favor and let this thread die a peaceful death. Replace it with something educational, positive or unifying. And I will work to be more "moderate" and tolerant in the future. Thank you for understanding.

Thank You

Thank you Jefferson for your continuing efforts in moderating this site. I think most of us are tired of the overly dramatic and whiny exits occurring on this site. This is a public forum designed for the dissemination of noteworthy events and information accompanied with thoughtful debate and discussion. This is the dailypaul -- not the dailycrybaby. If you want to leave because someone disagreed with you and/or offended you (which one should expect in a public forum), then simply leave. We don't need the exit speech.

excellent

thank you and to Nystrom I say your place is in good hands so go enjoy your vacation :)

You know what is most alarming?

The name calling, personal attacks and complete unwillingness to accept that others are allowed to have opinions that differ from their own. I have encountered this before, on fb, mostly during Ron Paul's campaign where supporters were viciously attacked, seemingly unprovoked by other fb members. Normal discourse was met with a negativity that you could almost feel through the computer. These attackers shared similarities in the way they spoke, the insults they chose to use and their unwillingness to accept logical arguments or even to agree to disagree. As if their intention was to shame or mock you out of your opinion. I can sense the same is being allowed to happen here and that sort of divisiveness is going to destroy this once tight knit community. I can't imagine they are anything but trolls trying to destroy this site by creating disharmony.

+1

Ever since Boston, it has been turned up to eleven.

Some of the folks here are turning into parodies of themselves at this point.

I just had to look up 2 new words today!

Hmmm

If you owned a newspaper...

...would you print articles which said that your paper sucks?

Free market capitalism isn't right for America because it works better. It's right because it's free (and it works better).

I'm still trying to get some reason

for why I was banned... and if I was previously warned if I have missed the warning and also the notice before being banned from new posts.

Yes Micheal you can run your site however you want. A simple notice and perhaps one warning would be reasonable to expect from an organization I've chosen to support (again) for over a year now (this time).

I think you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater here Micheal.

Peace

After awhile saying, "Yes Micheal you can run your site however you want.", things of this nature, a person starts to resemble the known, dreaded, "suck-ass". When is it not worth it?

Liberty gone bad?

Waving tree leaves to keep the owner occupied\pleased\refreshed isn't quite what is in mind of liberty (not my mind anyway).

Hrm...

While I understand that it is a privately owned site, I think censoring information, nonsense or not is a bit anti intellectual.

I think pasting a label onto something as "ok information" or "nonsense information" again prevents creative minds from expressing and posting.

Furthermore, if you would have asked me personally 10 years ago did I think 9/11 was fake, I would have laughed in your face (joined the Army because of it and deployed >.<). Regardless, now the more I look at that scenario the more I am convinced that I simply do not know. It also would not surprise me if it was fake. Our government can be downright tyrannous at times.

Ten years ago that would have been "censored information". That would have been a "crazy stance". It is just an example, but it proves my point.

I mean if I wanted filtered information, I might as well log onto fox news or cnn and get my daily dose.

All in all, of course it is a private site that can do what the owner wants. However keep in mind, this site is popular BECAUSE free flowing information is allowed here. Censoring information may or may not be in the site's best interest.

“I think it's much more

“I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. I have approximate answers and possible beliefs and different degrees of uncertainty about different things, but I am not absolutely sure of anything and there are many things I don't know anything about, such as whether it means anything to ask why we're here. I don't have to know an answer. I don't feel frightened not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without any purpose, which is the way it really is as far as I can tell.” Feynman

Too many army spambots and CIA interns posting nazi stuff

Too many army spambots and CIA interns posting nazi stuff here to discredit the D.P., that's why! Doubtless the moderators spend a more time clearing this site of spambot trash than actually conducting routine maintenance.

It is well-known that the D.P. has become a playground for the new hires at Mockingbird to tickle the ivories of the Mighty Wurlitzer and play a tune to besmirch the liberty movement.

Hokey one-liners generated by army spambots on youtube and the NY times comment sections are a thing of the past. The new AI algorithms developed by the DSA are much more advanced.

They get fine-tuned with the help of interns at the discretion of the incredibly incompetent yet still powerful fuehrer of the FBI, "Gestapo" Muller.

Gestapo Muller's brainless stupidity and carelessness has caused him to lose a lot of authority in this area. He had wrenched Mockingbird functions from the CIA years ago, after they dropped the ball too many times.

But Gestapo Muller himself has been forced by the vast internal struggle among the tangle of competing police state functionaries to "share" personnel and tasks with others, such as the DSA and NSA. Since the NSA has the power to store every single communication made by anyone, anytime, they have the goods on Gestapo Muller and the other SS men in our caring police state.

But the main testing ground for propaganda and counter-intelligence dissemination training is right here, folks. Just by exercising our rights, we're unwillingly helping our police state become all-pervasive and invincible, while indicting ourselves for the rest of our lives, "should the need arise."

Kinda makes us feel important, doesn't it?

You ask...

"Why is the downvote mechanism not sufficient to let the DP community democratically moderate the boards?"

... because the inmates have taken over the asylum.

It is why democracies don't work.

My God...

we actually agree on something...

the inmates have taken over the asylum.

It is why democracies don't work.

egapele's picture

then why don't you create your own site

and let it go unmoderated?

Perhaps it was another thread I saw?

The one I saw said "and this site."
I am not a moderator, but if I were, this is what I would be doing right now: Giving the 403 to ANYTHING that is "just 6itching." Nystrom's home was just attacked, he has been under a lot of stress, and he is about to take a nice vacation. Until he gets a chance to rest and recover, if I were a moderator, I would spend much of my day telling many of you to just STFU for one week. Stick to news of the day, important politics, post pictures of YOU doing something awesome or mundane... but give the man a break, just for one friggin' week.

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

In addition

some of the 403s I saw were of duplicate threads/threads that were extremely similar posted by the same person, like when that klinker78 person posted 3-4 threads all saying the same thing.

What gets me though, is the inconsistency of it, and how certain members are banned for seemingly mild offenses while others are allowed to stay despite doing nothing but stirring up shitstorms. Different mods, different judgement calls I suppose.

A signature used to be here!

who is moderating the mods?

( that would be Brother Nystrom )

idea : mods be required to leave a brief comment / place mark where they remove data

1. who removed it
2. their reasoning

that way DPeeps can at least understand the current state of the DP

perhaps we could vote on each moderator data-removal

perhaps mods themselves could be voted on

howbout a State of the DP annual address by Mr. Nystrom at a lavish banquet complete with full bar, hash bar, cannabis lounge, top microbrews, liberty speakers and musicians, more

obviously it will never happen in "shelter in place" town ( formerly known as Boston)

You're on to something!

The explanation, I don't know... usually people know why.
But the annual gathering, there is actually a state (or maybe more than one) where that could be possible now. If we started an annual event, same time and place every year, it would probably be small the first year or maybe two, but I bet it would grow pretty fast. There are some incredibly beautiful areas in the National Forest where we could set up a little off-grid village for a week. Show those environmentalists what "green" is all about... lol! Sort of "Burning FRN" - the libertarian answer to Burning Man.

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

Annual DP banquet

suggested location : Galt's Gulch Colorado ( formerly known as "Breckenridge" )
possible dates : mid-August ( we have incredible summers here ) or March / April ( incredible spring skiing )
events : State of the DP banquet ; visit with communist local government "officials"; tour de cannabis, liberty pub crawl, Liberty Summit atop 14,400 Mt. Quandary, technology forum at Hub ....

this could be fun

Not up on all the state laws

I thought Washington was the only state where consenting adults could imbibe - don't you need a "card" in Colorado?

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

seeking a license from the government

... is like begging for your few remaining unalienable rights to be snatched away. I smoke pot and I like it a lot. Never had a license .... never will.

Sort of what I was getting at

If I am correct, and Washington actually allows any consenting adult to do as they wish, THAT state deserves to be the home of a "liberty festival." There could be an entire line up of speakers about the healing properties... and I mean get physicians and other actual health care professionals to speak.

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.
