Fourteen Democratic state senators have fled the normally tranquil Midwestern state’s border in order to scupper a vote that would have forced an effective pay cut of seven per cent on public workers.
As protesters occupied the state legislative building in Madison for a fourth consecutive day, the absentee senators remained in hotels in the neighbouring state of Illinois, having denied the ruling Republicans the quorum necessary to hold a vote.
