Pleasure Without Responsibility: FDA Approves 'Morning After Pill' For Sale Over The Counter, Age 15 and Up

By LAURAN NEERGAARD | AP Medical Writer | May 01, 2013 | 2:47am EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- In a surprise twist to the decade-plus effort to ease access to morning-after pills, the government is lowering the age limit to 15 for one brand - Plan B One-Step - and will let it be sold over the counter.

Today, Plan B and its generic competition are sold behind pharmacy counters, and people must prove they're 17 or older to buy the emergency contraception without a prescription. A federal judge had ordered an end to those sales restrictions by next Monday.

Dirty Old Men

now just have to get the girl to buy her own emergency contraception. I guess we know who lobbied for this change.

You are very close to the truth

I heard a drunk bragging about how he gave his 12 year old daughter bc pills and told her they were for her acne. He also bragged about other mind games he used on his daughter and it was obvious why he did these mind games.

People like that will fell more emboldened with this new easier access.

that is a load of bs. Lets

that is a load of bs. Lets face the facts. Girls are having sex at a lot younger age than 18 and they need access to contraception. Their partners are usually other teenagers, not old men.

Key Word: "Usually"

Watch out for dirty ole men and women....

15 just seems too young...

The morning after pill can't be good for your body.. Especially when you are not even fully developed. I am not very educated on the drug but am just expressing my opinion..

There is gold, and an abundance of jewels;
But the lips of knowledge are a more precious thing.

Even Ron Paul is in favor of

Even Ron Paul is in favor of the morning after pill. He said there is no scientific test that would indicate a women is pregnant the day after having sex. If a girl is the victim of date rape or some other unfortunate event what is wrong with her having access to the morning after pill.It is just a double dose of a birth control pill.

Dear Parents,
We are now the parents.

Reject ALL authority.

People who choose to have sex should be able to choose whether or not to use contraception. Age is irrelevant. Neither parents nor state should interfere. Your body belongs to YOU, not some "authority."

Ron paul brought this up in the 2012 primary debates

He said something along the lines of : "We fight gun control because we don't believe the product is the cause of the immoral activity. We have to look at the immorality of our society."

But when he was asked

But when he was asked specifically what should be done to help a woman who had been raped, he said give them the morning after pill.

Specifically, I remember

Him saying he'd give her a shot of progesterone. The point being is that stuff has side effects and you need to be under a doctor's care when using it.

Worth another bump. Links to age of consent laws by state.

In every state, the age of consent is between 16-18, no one younger than that.

To summarize:

1. At 18, you can legally kill in the military and vote, but not drink alcohol.
2. The age of consent is no lower than 16-18 in every state.
3. At 15, only girls can legally kill outside of the military, but can neither vote, drink alcohol, nor legally kill in the military.

O.K., I think I got it.

Wait! heres another:

4. In 29 states, under 21 year olds can drink alcohol with parental permission - a 18 yr old "adult" needs "parent permission" what???? Got it now???

Now let's do the same thing in regard to marijuana.

Bump it up!

I think some below are missing the point of the ruling

It is not whether or not the plan B pill is OK as a means to prevent pregnancy.

The issue at hand is whether it is OK for children to buy and take it without their parents knowledge. Clearly, an 18 year old is an emancipated adult and reached an age where they are supposedly mature enough to make such decisions for themselves. But that is entirely different for minors. 15 year olds in general have not reached a level of maturity to decide what drugs are OK. That is what parents are for. I don't advocate a law for this but I would think it prudent for pharmacies to self police and not sell drugs to minors without parental permission.

If you are old enough to get pregnant,

I would say that makes a fairly good case that you are old enough to use contraception including buying and taking a morning after pill.

Otherwise the state would be able to argue that a 15 year old isn't mature enough to be a parent either and take the child from her.

"Bend over and grab your ankles" should be etched in stone at the entrance to every government building and every government office.

and what if

the pharmacies don't self police. What if they sell these drugs to minors anyway?

law is still not required, correct?

Love thy enemy.

Why does the government get

Why does the government get to decide when a person becomes an adult? If the parents are really in charge of their children's raising then why can't they decide when their child is mature enough to make decisions and sign a document that says their child is emancipated at whatever age they choose?

Then they'll have to pay the consequences

if they get caught.
15yo= minor=statutory rape
Or are you proposing lowering the age of consent?

Pleasure without responsibility:

The best kind of pleasure =D

I know as if you have to be responsible

To enjoy anything anymore.....

For Freedom!
The World is my country, all mankind is my brethren, to do good is my religion.

I have no problem with this,

I have no problem with this, its not like they are selling addictive synthetic opiates to kids.

Teens engaging in sexual activity is a cultural problem due to parents letting TV raise their kids instead of them. Having a morning after pill available is not going to motivate teens to have more sex, it is however going to prevent unwanted pregnancy or even abortion if the women finds out she is actually pregnant later.

Many "Conservatives" claim to want less government regulation and intervention unless it goes agains their value system which is a dangerous thing.

We all share this eternally evolving present moment- The past and future only exist as inconsequential mental fabrications.

Pleasure Without Responsibility?

Sounds like using that pill IS being responsible.

Ron Paul has even said that

morning after pills are not abortion pills, because we don't have any science supporting that reasoning.

Love thy enemy.

I'd agree with this

as much as I have pro life tendencies, those tendencies conflict with the amount of money that gets dolled out to million of bitches that squirt out kids like a PEZ dispenser.

You can buy an abortion pill

But can't buy certain cough medicine- our society is doomed.

All drugs should be legal to all ages

period. That's how we keep the parents involved in the kids' lives. If they can't be trusted in 'the real world' then they won't be left alone.

Gotta love the libertarian opinions below saying this is bad and shouldn't be allowed. Allowed? By whom? Where does it end? That's right, it doesn't.
