Huge Brawl Breaks Out In Venezuela's GovernmentSubmitted by Michellee on Wed, 05/01/2013 - 19:56
A brawl broke out in Venezuela's National Assembly on Tuesday as political tensions mounted over disputed elections in the South American country. Opposition lawmakers claimed they were physically assaulted in a planned ambush by supporters of President Nicolas Maduro's government, while leaders of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela blamed the opposition for instigating violence. Venezuela's postelection tensions erupted into a brawl between lawmakers Tuesday night that left at least one opposition member badly bruised and bleeding.
Pro-government legislators started throwing punches after members of the opposition coalition unfurled a banner in the National Assembly protesting a postelection ban stripping opposition lawmakers of most of their legislative powers, opposition lawmaker Ismael Garcia told The Associated Press. Video showed groups of legislators shoving and pushing each other on the floor.
