Teachers Shocked, Frightened After School Holds Unplanned Shooting Drill

HALFWAY, Ore. (CBS Seattle/AP) — Teachers were shocked and caught off guard when an Oregon school held a school shooting drill.

The Oregonian reports Pine Eagle Charter School in Halfway held the drill last Friday as children were home for an in-service day. Two masked “gunmen” burst into a meeting room holding 15 teachers firing blanks. Teachers only realized it wasn’t a real shooting when none of them were bleeding.

“There was some commotion,” school principal Cammie DeCastro told The Oregonian.

Teachers were frightened about what happened.

“I’ll tell you, the whole situation was horrible,” Morgan Gover told the paper. “I got a couple in the front and a couple in the back.”

The school held the unplanned drill in hopes to better educate teachers on how to deal with a school shooting. Of the 15 teachers in the room, only two would have survived.

“I’m in charge of a pile of kids,” Gover told The Oregonian. “It made me analyze as a teacher what my role is for these babies.”

The drill has been criticized but the school has dismissed the criticism.

“For us not to know how we were going to respond is leaving us open,” DeCastro told The Oregonian.

DeCastro added that arming teachers or having armed volunteers at the school are possible outcomes for the future.

Last month, the Oregon Senate Judiciary Committee passed, on a 3-2 party-line vote, four bills that would expand background checks and add new restrictions on carrying firearms. The bills next move to the Senate floor.

The proposed legislation would expand background checks to cover private gun sales and transfers, exempting exchanges between family members, including domestic partners. It would also prohibit licensed gun owners from openly carrying firearms in public buildings, allow school districts to ban firearms on school grounds, and require concealed-weapons permit applicants to take a course taught by a live instructor. A provision requiring applicants for concealed-weapons permits to pass a firing range test was dropped.

The drill comes in response to the December school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., that killed 26 people, including 20 children.

50 years ago, these psycos would have had their asses kicked ...

over this (by irate fathers and/or husbands).
And it would have been done in the middle of town for all to see.
But few real men are left in this country.
Today's fathers will instead file a law suit (at best).

Did bomb drills when my father was in school.

What would have happened if teachers stormed a police station?

Several real shootings with most teachers actually dead I'm afraid!

This is an absolute "Power by Intimidation" ploy! The cops are now criminals and should be held accountable as such. Bad judgement or not, there is no getting around the fact that they violated several laws. Average citizens make bad judgements everyday legally and they pay the price for them anyway in the eyes of the law. If anything, the penalties for this should be even stricter, since these were city officials and law enforcement agents who absolutely abused their positions of power. They should be held even more accountable for this very fact! If I were these teachers, I would sue them to the hilt in civil court anyway!

"Liberty tastes sweetest to those who fight for it, and most bitter to those who work to deny it!"

They created a legal killing..

..if the teachers over-came and killed the mock attackers.

From what I understand, you can defend yourself in court if someone convinces you that they are going to kill you and you defend yourself.

I believe there have been instances of police doing this to civilians who wield either fake or mistaken weapons.

Maybe it will take some back-firing mishap like this to make these idiot educators realize the fault in their thinking.

Now, where's a good home school website?
..and, do I really have to help pay for these teachers?

McLaughlin v. United States, 476 US 16 - Supreme Court 1986

The court gave three reasons why an unloaded weapon was still considered a dangerous weapon.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.
~ John Muir

I'm sort of glad that

court ruling is there. I worry about how it defines a gun as dangerous always even if not loaded.

The danger starts when convincing someone it's loaded in order to threaten them, which is what bank robbers with unloaded weapons are definitely doing. That potentially sets off a variety of scenarios that are very dangerous to everyone nearby.

Just as in when someone moves as if to assault someone with their bare hands, they can't then claim any response is unwarranted because they were joking or in control enough not to use deadly force and just wanted to scare someone, which happens way more than you'd think.

The point is, when you trigger someone to act in defense of their life, you are the one responsible for whatever happens. A person in that unique frame of mind can't even be expected to stop themselves after you're down, much less think carefully about whether the threat is real.

Defend Liberty!

Put another way..

People who try to affect their victim with a 'fake punch' create deniability ("I didn't punch them and the act was not real") and leeway for an attack (the victim suppresses their urge to defend themselves).

The same is true for other fake attacks: 'false flag' events, terror drills, etc..

The perceived perpetrators of lethal attack place themselves in a compromising legal position.

Maybe someday we will see real citizens; acting in self defense, kill a terror drill participant.
Maybe then people will start to see that staged drills in public settings is a very bad idea.
More likely, those at fault will avoid blame.

What if someone mercy killed a bomb drill actor?

If the Boston bombing is merely a staged event for the purpose of training and learning, has anyone considered that would-be bombers can probably learn just as much from the incident?

Fake punches are simply a bad idea, and people need to be able to defend themselves.

If Students Learn from their Teachers, then...

..it's o.k. for students to perform unplanned shoot-outs with blanks.

That worked well for Brandon Lee ;) (see wikipedia reference if you don't know).

The Police Could Be Subject to Civil Suits

Traumatizing the school personnel in this way could result in a civil lawsuit because this could be considered cruel and unnecessary. It might even be prosecuted as a crime if it wasn't for who was doing it.

Could you imagine what a district attorney might do if a private contractor was involved?

The mock gunmen were "school staffers."

I think they should be fired. But you're right that really it might warrant something more serious such as a lawsuit - against the school administration who planned/staged the event. Maybe also some censure of the sheriff, whose office apparently trained them, if they advised the school to make it an unannounced drill. BUT...

that would take the WILL of the TEACHERS who were traumatized to register complaints. That's part of what my post was about:

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.
~ John Muir

Hmmmm... Is this story drifting?

I swear the first account I saw said they were with the Sheriff's department... maybe it said "working with" or something.
Even if it was staff...
"How do they get EVERYONE in on the secret?"
Like this:
Two gunmen burst into a teachers meeting in a tiny Oregon town on Friday. Wearing hoodies and firing handguns, they burst into the room. Mrs. Gover, a teacher there, quickly grabbed her pistol and returned fire, killing the closest gunman but missing the second gunman as he fled.
The entire Hell's Canyon National Recreation Area is CLOSED to all recreational use, residents within the boundaries are asked to shelter in place and advise law enforcement immediately if you see anyone in the area. If you see anyone DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE SUSPECT, he is armed and extremely dangerous.
County, State and Federal officials will be conducting house to house searches, with Forest Service and BLM personnel will be combing the wilderness by air, horseback and ATV.
UPDATE: Police have identified the dead gunman as Joe Bloh, a disgruntled staffer at the small school. Staff were stunned, many knew he was upset about the wage freeze but had no inkling that he was capable of such a cold blooded attack.
Cammie DeCastro, principal of the Pine Eagle Charter School in Halfway, Ore., says Mrs. Gover had her weapon on her in violation of school policy, and Sheriff's official state there will be an investigation. For now, everyone is thankful that none of the staff were injured.
Law enforcement official continue to comb the area in search of the second gunman.
The alternative media stories begin - crazy conspiracy theorists under every rock. Some claim this was a drill "gone live." Right. In a town that small everybody knows everything. You can't have school staff plan a "drill" - especially one where someone might shoot them. Did you see the youtube from the guy who swears he knows the dead guy, and he was NOT pissed off at the school about the money, he was pissed off at the government. Seems like he'd have gone and shot the government then, huh?
The second shooter has been identified as Tom Dickenharry. Police are not revealing the exact nature of the evidence, but a spokesman stated that documents found on the dead gunman leave no doubt who his accomplice is. If you have any information about the whereabouts of this man, or anything that would aid the investigation, contact authorities at 1-800-HELHUNT.
(Lace it with videos of his distraught wife, begging him to turn himself in... Students who played baseball with him just last week...)
Due to the extremely rugged terrain and wide open wilderness open for him to evade justice, the police called in the drones and the gunman has been located and the threat is neutralized. Law enforcement wants to thank everyone for their assistance in this near-tragedy, and want to assure the citizens that they are always there to protect them from these kind of madmen.
How many people really need to KNOW it is a cover for a live event?

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

Um... that's quite a scenario.

I'd like to think that nothing so nefarious would happen. But it's an interesting what if. Btw, did you ever find out if it did involve people you knew?

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.

Not someone I know, a shirt tail relative.

I mean, I could make some phone calls if it means a lot to you, but it is one of those tiny towns, everyone is related, and my sister in law is from that town, maiden name "Gover." I'm pretty sure they would be from that family. The only person I know living there is her mother and she is very old, would not have been at the school.

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

No, I was just curious because you mentioned it.

This whole issue of school shooting drills just gets my goat. I did a post on the subject because I just think it's so EXTREME when, although school shootings are horrific events, each death a tragedy... in the scheme of things, there are FAR more common causes of death to children. One child dies EVERY HOUR from "unintended injuries," the leading cause of childhood death. Where's the public outcry over that? "Saving lives" could not be the motivation for all these drills, and they're happening all over. But what prompted me to write something, what got to me about this surprise attack by masked gunmen, is the seeming complacency of the teachers involved.

Btw, fishy, in your scenario, that was some writing there. You had everything covered.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.

I wonder...

if even three people in the group of teachers had been carrying concealed, in the end, how this little exercise in terror would have been different. Might there have been dead police officers?

In a "gun free zone" the police can rest assured there's noone who can hurt them, so they pull off this stunt. If it shows nothing else, I wonder how the teachers feel being shot like fish in a barrel, just like the students they claim they want to protect.

If this stunt doesn't signal the end of "gun free zones" I don't know what else can be done to awaken the people.

They wouldn't have even had to have had concealed carry.

If the teachers had rushed these two "gunmen" and beat the crap out of them or stabbed the gun-weilding assailants with letter openers, scissors, or bashed in their skulls with some heavy object within grasp, this could've also had a very ugly ending.

You're right that there is an obvious perception of gun free zones as helpless victim zones....and if the cops know they're helpless victims, the criminals will as well.

On so many levels

This is truly foolish. Truly dangerous, unwise, and traumatizing. My first reaction was laughter. Imagine those teachers' reactions... they must've shat a dozen picnic baskets. Really real terror induced panic. Way to go to the sick bastard central planners who came up with this.

for those with kids in public schools,

who are obviously concerned for their safety in the Govt's ever-BS mandated "Gun Free Zones," please share the following, and consider inviting/hiring Rob Pincus, one of world's most renowned tactical instructors.

Rob Pincus travels the country/world regularly, and has affiliate programs across the US and the world.

In light of current climate, recently he specifically developed a safety/defense course geared for K~12 called SARC, the School Attacker Response Course. The course was designed to close the gap between armed teachers and those who don't want them armed.

I have heard nothing but good things about Rob Pincus.

Another trainer I would highly recommend is Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, who does a chilling but totally necessary "warrior mindset" training class. Here's a review of it from Buckeye Firearms Association:

Pincus is really one of the best ones around right now. I posted @DP about several reputable tactical instructors from Frank Proctor to James Yeager (yes folks, he may come off wild, but if you've followed his works and training over the yrs, it's easy to discern fact from fiction), but Pincus as a former SWAT cop who went privateering due to obvious institutional bureaucratic roadblocks, has one of the best attitudes about teaching:

his goal seems clear: he wants to create, train a cadre of tactical instructors who can actually teach anyone, rather than repeat former Military or Police training, 'just because they've always done it that way.' He's one of the most 'academically' practical instructors around who can break down from mechanics to philosophy of why.

there are so many incredibly talented, highly skilled, and intelligent instructors, all around the country, now; it ain't like when Jeff Cooper just started GunSite. Blank from AR-15 indoors

Doesn't sound as loud as it did in person, but that's my camera.

That leveled the cans within 6' away. Nice little flash, and huge cloud of dust and dog fur at the end. I wouldn't want someone firing that at me indoors, not to mention the unburnt powder scattered all over the house after that.

Here is the can:

Notice the dents in it from the powder?

The hissing sound is me cooking dinner with my pressure cooker.

care to try a .50BMG blank indoors?

that alone is the reason why NFA must be repealed: seriously, for anyone who ever had to defend themselves, waking suddenly in the middle of the night or early-AM, the prospect of firing inside your home without a can, is preposterous, unless you can get a set of electronic muffs on time (and how many can, or are gonna do that?)

besides, your natural hearing will always be better than e-muffs, no matter what the spec says:

Can't stop the terror

Can't stop the terror machine. It's good enough to make sure the ones teaching our children how to become socially functioning adults are restrained by the manacles of fear - it rolls down hill after all.

"It would also prohibit

"It would also prohibit licensed gun owners from openly carrying firearms in public buildings,..."

so if i never was a gun owner never registered or licensed a gun, but a family member gives me one..can i open carry it still since I'M not a licensed gun owner?

And what if one of those teachers had been packing?...

I was just gonna say, what if

I was just gonna say, what if one of them dialed out to 911 causing the school a pile of headaches, but that's another good point. Makes you wonder if going into this, they knew the result and just assumed their teacher's were to 'unprepared' to do anything to the attacker(whether with gun or not).

hey why their at it...

why not just open the door to the lunch room and lob a few smoke bomb grenades in there? They would be fakes of course, but you know, for effect and all - it has to seem real...

God these people involved in these drills are part of the ruination of America...quit frightening everyone to the point their senses no longer decipher reason from falacy...
