Study: Why Pot Smokers Are Skinnier

Marijuana users had smaller waists and scored higher across several measures of blood sugar regulation.

"Marijuana use is associated with an acute increase in caloric intake," goes the clinical jargon for popular lore. Still despite eating more while high (by some measures, over 600 extra calories per day), marijuana users' extra intake doesn't seem to be reflected in increased BMI. Indeed, studies have identified a reduced prevalence of obesity in the pot smoking community.

Any country that locks people in cages

and wrecks their lives because they use a plant for ANY reason has no standing in critisizing anyones civil rights records and is in fact an unfree place.

Here's a conspiracy

In 1975 The Medical College of Virginia was commissioned to study the idea that cannabis destroys the immune system. They not only found that it did the opposite but that it reduced cancer tumors by 50%.

It took Norml 15 years through the Freedom of Information Act to get this study released in 1990. Why is cannabis still banned from use or study here in the states? What is the Govt hiding? Pretty sure there is a conspiracy going on.

In this study only 12% of the participants smoke weed, and 42% have smoked it before, possibly years ago. That does not make an accurate study, not even close. Besides i smoke plenty of weed and im not getting any smaller i just keep packing them on, and my buddies aint getting any smaller either

Any one that smokes is skinnier

No matter what you smoke, cigarettes or marijuana, you get skinny. The smoke blocks oxygen to your cells.

LoL

I enjoyed that. Thank you.

If you don't know your rights, you don't have any.

What??? That makes no sense

What??? That makes no sense at all. I have been smoking cigarettes since I was 13 and am now 44..doing the math..that means I have been smoking for 31 years. Anytime I go with anyone to the doctors I always check my oxygenation level. It has never been anything but 100 every time...so are you saying although my blood is totally saturated with life giving oxygen, that my cells are not receiving any of this oxygen? And at what point will my cells start to die? and how skinny should I be without any cells because they have died? I really am quite interested.

Read the article.

They measured things like insulin tolerance. It has nothing to do with "blocking oxygen".

And cigarette smokers aren't thinner. They get fatter when they quit because of the oral fixation driving them to eat. And I have known plenty of obese smokers as well.

Now, I know nothing about your suggestion that somehow blocking oxygen makes you thinner, but I do know that is not related to this article.

And cigarette smokers aren't thinner. They get fatter when they quit because of the oral fixation driving them to eat. And I have known plenty of obese smokers as well.

These studies examined the cellular mechanisms for lower adiposity seen with nicotine ingestion... These studies provide evidence for multiple mechanistic events underlying nicotine-induced alterations in weight and suggest that nicotine diverts fat storage away from adipose tissue and toward utilization by muscle.

Weight gain and adipose tissue metabolism after smoking cessation in women

CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that smoking cessation is associated with significant increases in body weight, as well as changes in adipose cell metabolism, in particular increases in AT-LPL activity. This increase in LPL activity may contribute to the increase in body weight associated with smoking cessation.

What's your point?

What are you suggesting? So after quitting smoking many people become more obese....because of oral fixation.....and I guess also because of the lack of nicotine directing food energy towards muscles, instead of storing it as fat. I just don't get the point your trying to make or if you are trying to make one at all? But, I'm interested.

I quit twenty years ago Aug 1st.

And I haven't broken out in handcuffs since, funny that.

But I'm not an Nazi ex user, do unto others as you want done unto you.

Even if marijuana was the most dangerous substance on earth...

It's still my right as a free man to use it so long as no one else gets hurt by it...

...and they won't ;)

This should be the core of any argument

concerning substance use/"abuse."

But it still helps to talk about the benefits!

Smoking for 5 years now.

I don't recommend smoking cannabis, however.

I recommend vaporizing it or making tasty baked goods with it. I'm currently going without for a while to save up for a vaporizor.

I also recommend the following documentaries for anyone who is still on the fence about this issue, or just hasn't seen them yet:

Looking for a vaporizer?

Check out the MFLB. The best $99 vape with a lifetime warranty on the market. It's no volcano, but the vapor production is certainly on par once you get the hang of it/identify the sweet spot.

Best place to buy?

My mother has leukemia. I would like to get this for her. I checked out their website - $125. I am going to see if anyone discounts. Thanks for the recommendation.

Lozenges

I would also check out lozenges.

My girlfriend has some acute lifelong stomach problems and has a lozenge she uses. It gives her instant relief if she sucks on it and is much faster/stronger than smoking for her. She works in a dispensary and they give the lozenges out to patients with any type of cancer and have had some awesome results.

Best of luck,

Eric Hoffer

My condolances.

eBay is your friend.

$70 with free shipping. Retail price is $99, which is what I may or may not have bought mine for, so $70's a pretty good deal. Certainly beats $125.

Best of luck to you and your mother. If she's interested in cannabis as more than an alleviation of symptoms of cancer/chemo and instead as a potential cure, I highly recommend you both check out concentrates and high cannabanoid waxes. You can't vape those in the MFLB, but if you're willing to get a more expensive product or simply smoke it, the anti-cancer properties are much stronger than the flower itself.

Thank you

Thank you so much. Got a lot to learn - going to start reading up on it.

The Union is awesome!

That doc is actually the reason I didn't end up getting a vaporizer. There's a scene in it where they talk about the carcinogens that were expected to be harmful from smoking it but a study found that even the smoke has no health risk qualities. The most amazing plant on this planet, IMO!

Look at the resin in your

Look at the resin in your bowl. That is also in your lungs. Not sure if its carcinogenic or not, but the Vap does not leave that residue.

I hate my vaporizer

destroys the taste and is a heavier feeling buzz. Give me a good ol water bong.

Marijuana is fat soluable.

Thus, it is broken down through natural process. But don't toke it from me, a born asthmatic.

They that give up liberty for security deserve neither.

I, too, have asthma.

It's quite amazing that my stamina and breathing is vastly improved when I'm smoking pot compared to when I go without. When I stop for a few weeks is when I have to break out my inhaler!

The funniest part? I used to reject a toke from my friends because I thought it would adversely affect my asthma. Ha! Joke's on me.

Completely agree

I was basically born a 'bubble boy'. I had asthma attacks near daily and had been to the hospital scores of times by age two to receive immediate treatment.

I was allergic to all grass, tree pollen, dogs, cats, and weather changes.

I survived by an inhaler for most of my youth - I was told not to play sports or spend too much time outdoors. Which is ironic because dust is also a major cause of allergy issues commonly found inside.

My parents let me be a kid, I could play sports so long as I had an epi-pen and inhaler at my side. I ended up playing soccer, basketball, football, hockey, and baseball.. was a year-'round athlete. When I first started smoking at age 17, I too worried about the consequences of directly inhaling smoke into my already aggravated lungs..

The result? A higher lung capacity, less wheezing, and a greater stamina.

Just recently I had to postpone my activities as I am searching for serious employment - in a short time my wheezing came back and I have trouble breathing at night. I refuse to use my inhaler because of its ADD like side-effects... I just take calm, deep breaths, and force any temporary congestion out immediately...

I can't wait to free my lungs, and mind, again.

They that give up liberty for security deserve neither.

See my comment below

While it makes a good visual argument, the studies show it actually protects the lungs.

Love or fear? Chose again with every breath.

Well, the smoke isn't carcinogenic

but it's still laden with tar. And while there's currently no evidence of cannabis smoke giving anyone COPD or emphysema, it still comes with decreased lung function and much higher susceptibility to things like pneumonia in old age, which can be just as scary as the "labeled" diseases we're all supposed to quake in fear over.

Point is, if you can vape, do! One is clearly more healthy than the other.

Um actually...

I had Tuberculosis of the lung a few years back brought on by a stressful breakup I went through and when I was at home for 3 months my nurse actually told me that smoking pot would be beneficial to my recovery. I was told that once the golfball-sized hole that was eaten away in the upper meaty portion of my lung healed, it would scar and my lung capacity would be diminished. However, my lung capacity and general stamina has never been better. Never. I had asthma and got pneumonia often as a kid too and even that has gone.

I'm not so sure there is any tar from cannabis but there definitely is resin which is just a concentration of thc. I cannot see how getting a nice coat of that on my lungs is a bad thing.
